Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) has seen their fair share of irate residents and business owners lately, and today it no different. A group of residents from various areas of Wesselton are picketing in front of the MLM building, with SAPS keeping a close eye on proceedings. The residents in question expressed their dismay regarding a court order of removal issued recently. Amongst other concerns, service delivery, electrical supply and disconnections, employment issues and supply chain dissatisfaction issues were raised. “It’s terrible. We are treated like nothing, like we are not human beings. We are all suffering, we need to provide for our families, and we are being blocked by unlawful proceedings,” a picketer told the Tribune. Wesselton has come under the spotlight for the lack of maintenance, especially regarding the roads, electrical and water supply infrastructure. “I care for a disabled family member, which makes it difficult to navigate within Wesselton. • Cassim Park tumbling downhill

Dissatisfaction has also been directed at the behavior of municipal refuse collectors, who allegedly contribute to the pollution issue faced by residents. Cassim Park tumbling downhill 1/4 Share GK CRONJE 12 January 2022 Dissatisfaction has also been directed at the behavior of municipal refuse collectors, who allegedly contribute to the pollution issue faced by residents. Amidst the alarming lack service delivery experienced in Ermelo and its surroundings, Cassim Park is getting the short end of the stick regarding maintenance from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). What was once the pride and joy of residents in this area, Cassim Park has since regressed to a hollow shadow of its former glory. Streets are riddled with potholes, a myriad of worksites are left incomplete, several streetlights are either damaged and leaning dangerously towards the roadway, or completely out of order, and uncollected refuse litter the sidewalks. Grass on municipal grounds are long and unkempt, and council buildings, covered in graffiti and obscene spray painted images, rot away in glorious non-maintenance. Residents are fuming at the fact that they face electricity issues on a daily basis, often being left for hours without electricity, with a very slow response rate from municipal departments. Speaking to residents in the area, they claim to have reported these issues they face on a daily basis to MLM on several occasions, with no joy. Apart from the above, residents are also wholly disgusted with the multiplying heaps of household refuse and building rubble on the sidewalks and in the wards. Dissatisfaction has also been directed at the behavior of municipal refuse collectors, who allegedly contribute to the pollution issue faced by residents. “Some weeks the refuse collection service doesn't even arrive. When they do, they make more of a mess than anything else, tearing the refuse bags and leaving the aftermath for us to clean up. It's a constant uphill battle with service delivery from Msukaligwa Local Municipality. Because they often don't collect the refuse, some residents have taken it upon themselves to ditch their household refuse in fields and parking areas. It's shocking, to say the least.” These were the words of an unhappy resident in Cassim Park. She contacted the Tribune ePaper regarding the growing refuse issue that plagues Cassim Park, and the nonchalant behavior from teams responsible for refuse removal. Upon investigation, it is clear that Cassim Park is in service delivery crisis. Once beautiful buildings and shopping centres have been reduced to husks of their former glory, with vagrants and vandals taking their toll on municipal buildings and infrastructure. The sidewalks and wards are littered with uncollected refuse, business premises are wrought with debris, fallen lampposts and all manner of unsavory items. The roadways are a maze of potholes, and overgrown grass and shrubbery on municipal grounds make basic driving a task of horror. < Previous Article Next Article >

WOF MPU Canada deployees return home 1/8 Share GK CRONJE 28 September 2021 Khumalo was crowned the best female runner at the pre-deployment camp in Hekpoort, Gauteng, where the WOF crew underwent Refresher Training to ensure they are fit and ready for the conditions expected in Canada. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Working on Fire Programme’s 109 firefighters returned to South African soil with high praises, from Canadian Fire Authorities, after 34 days in the Province of Manitoba, Canada. Aptly named the Black Bear Hotshots after an encounter with a bear in Manitoba, the team landed safely in South Africa on Thursday, 16 September 2021. Canada has been engulfed with wildland fires as of July 2021, and had resorted to South Africa for assistance under the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries, which provided the exchange of Wildland Fire Management Resources. WOF firefighters joined firefighters from Canada and the USA, and were deployed on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, as well as into The Pas-Cranberry Portage region. Working on Fire Mpumalanga boasted of seven representatives in the WOF contingent. Led by Walter Khoza, Ground Operations Manager in the Highveld region, the firefighters consisted of Sibusiso Ngobeni (Crewleader of the Mlambongwane team ), Sphilile Khumalo (Piet Retief), Bongani Sifunda (Barberton), Siphesihle Makhubu (Wakkerstroom ), Sipho Mlotshwa (Badplaas) and Itumeleng Mogane (Wilgeboom). WOF Mpumalanga General Manager, Martin Bolton, welcomed the firefighters when they returned to the province with words of praise. “We are proud of you, and what you achieved in Canada. Your hard work and dedication have been noted and appreciated. You represented the organization, province, and country well, and well done,” Bolton said. Sphilile Khumalo was the only woman from Working on Fire Mpumalanga, and it was a many of firsts for her. This was the first time Spihilile was deployed outside of the country, and her first time on an airplane. Recruited in 2014, in Piet Retief, Khumalo has had a tumultuous fitness journey in WOF, citing the tough WOF fitness standard as her biggest challenge, adding that she failed at times, and recorded poor performance, but she told herself that she would overcome, and she did. Khumalo began her own fitness regime at home, and worked on her physicality. Her hard work and determination bore fruit, because Khumalo was crowned the best female runner at the pre-deployment camp in Hekpoort, Gauteng, where the WOF crew underwent Refresher Training to ensure they are fit and ready for the conditions expected in Canada. Indeed, a proud moment for the participant and WOF Mpumalanga, and according to Ground Operation Manager, Walter Khoza, Khumalo outperformed a few males on her way to her crowning glory. < Previous Article Next Article >
