  • Beware of circulating fake messages | tribune-newspaper

Beware of circulating fake messages 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 8 February 2022 Unless you provide the scammer with authentication, verification or one time PIN (OTP) or banking PIN codes, the call will be futile. Residents are hereby requested to refrain from circulating a WhatsApp message that claims that your banking application on your phone can be hacked via a phone call. According to the message, the caller allegedly requests you to pick an option between pressing 1 and 2 on your dialer, to confirm whether or not you are vaccinated. Your banking app is then allegedly hacked after completing the dialing prompts. This circulating chain message should be considered as fake. Based off available information, the currently circulating message had been constructed off a similar WhatsApp message that had circulated in May 2021, which had been verified as fake. The fake message from 2021 also stated that the call was for “vaccination status census”. Verified sources state that a scammer can call you, pretending to be someone official, and so gain access to your personal details. Unless you provide the scammer with authentication, verification or one time PIN (OTP) or banking PIN codes, the call will be futile. According to ABSA, in cases such as these, fraudster will call you, pretending to be a bank representative or other authoritative person, who requires information such as your ID number, banking details and logon credentials to your online banking profile, to solve a problem or prevent your account from being closed. Vishing is difficult to trace, especially now that fraudsters can mask their numbers, leading a victim to believe that the call is from a legitimate source, or by diverting their number to a legitimate number. Clients can protect themselves by always being vigilant and never sharing their PIN, password, passcode and transaction verification or card CVV number with anyone. If you receive such a phonecall, immediately end the call, and report the call to your bank’s fraud helpline, and alert the SAPS. Your bank will never require you to verify your PIN, CVV or account details via a phonecall. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Xtra Savings can now also transact | tribune-newspaper

Xtra Savings can now also transact 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 2 November2021 To get a Money Market Account, register for a free account in-store or download the Shoprite app from the Apple Store, Huawei App Gallery or Google Play Store. Good news for all shoppers! Checkers and Shoprite Xtra Savings members can now transact using their Xtra Savings cards following a significant update to the Shoprite Group’s Money Market Account. The Money Market Account, which has attracted 530 000 users since it launched just over a year ago, now provides customers with transactional banking functionalities, including sending money and making withdrawals. “The development and roll out of the account have been driven entirely by customer needs,” explains Jean Olivier, General Manager: Financial Services at the Shoprite Group. Customers indicated that they like transacting with their phones, but also with a card, and some raised concerns about how to access their Money Market Account if their phone battery went dead or they forgot their phones. Realizing that 20 million customers already had the Xtra Savings rewards card, the Group worked on a solution. Customers can now link their Xtra Savings card to their Money Market Account and will be able to use these cards to pay for items provided shoppers have funds in their account. They can use their Xtra Savings cards to pay for goods at checkout points, as they would any other bank card. Money Market Accounts offer banked and unbanked consumers, many of whom are regular customers at the Group’s stores, access to basic transactional banking activities that are specifically aimed at their needs. The account gives them simplicity and transparency, as there are no fees and no physical forms, as it is all digital. It also offers low-cost banking with no monthly fees, no load fees, no transactional fees, only a R5 withdrawal fee, and no debit orders or deductions, as to ensure that customers are in full control of their money. Easy access is offered on any mobile phone, and available for free via the Shoprite app, USSD (*120*3534#), WhatsApp (087 240 5709) or the Xtra Savings card. Anyone can register for a Money Market Account, as a customers just need a South African ID or any passport and a South African cellphone number. “It is a straightforward account which allows customers to be in full control of their money and does not surprise them with any hidden fees,” says Olivier. To get a Money Market Account, register for a free account in-store or download the Shoprite app from the Apple Store, Huawei App Gallery or Google Play Store, or by by dialing *120*3534#. Customers can also add Shoprite on 027 87 240 5709, or Checkers on 027 87 240 5385 as a WhatsApp contact, and follow the prompts. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • ANC councillors warned against food parcel fraud

Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) executive mayor, Muzi Chirwa, in his capacity the Chairperson of the District Command Council warned councillors to reject involvement in the distribution of food parcels. This comes after ANC councilors throughout the province have been warned to stay away from the distribution of food parcels, to no avail, with councillors still choosing to stick their fingers in the pie. A slew of complaints and allegations have surfaced, which involves ANC councillors looting food parcels, handing food parcels to their friends and families, and even charging residents an alleged “small fee” for the parcels to be delivered. “No councillor in the District must be found to be in violation of the instruction that Councillors should not be involved in the distribution of food parcels. Our role as councillors should be to ensure that the needy people in the communities and the wards we are responsible for, are on the list managed by the Department of Social Department (DSD) and that we monitor that food is received by all. Stakeholders who wish to partner with us in providing food parcels, must all do so through DSD. No one must come with different lists which deviate from the DSD list. There must be coherence and integration of this significant activity,” Chirwa sternly stated. This meeting took place ahead of the lowering of the National Alert Level to Level 3. All government stakeholders presented their progress reports to the DCC during the meeting, according to the different clusters. The next virtual meeting took place on 1 June, details to the meeting was unavailable at the time of publication. • No respite from stray cattle

On previous occasions, MLM stated that residents should contact the call centre to report such incidents. However, the inefficiency of the call centre, coupled with the lackluster response time from municipal departments have made this statement all but redundant. No respite from stray cattle 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 14 July 2020 On previous occasions, MLM stated that residents should contact the call centre to report such incidents. However, the inefficiency of the call centre, coupled with the lackluster response time from municipal departments have made this statement all but redundant. Over the course of several years, cattle owners have systematically circumvented the by-laws of Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) with regards to the care, control and branding of cattle and other stray animals. These individuals have also taken advantage of MLM’s lax attitude and have erected pens and makeshift shelters for farm animals in several wards. Despite the municipality’s by-laws stating that no person may keep farm animals in an enclosure or stable within 15 meters of any boundary of any land, dwelling, building or any structure used for human habitation, or 50 meters of any water resource or water supply intended or used for human consumption, transgressors live their best lives without consequence. Although it is mandated by the Animal Identification Act, Act 6 of 2000, a large percentage of the stray animals roaming the CBD, roadways, wards and surrounding areas are unmarked and unbranded. The fact that there are no longer pounding services offered by local companies makes life extremely difficult for residents and road users alike. Stray animals and cattle impede the flow of traffic, and have been the cause of many an accident in the vicinity of Ermelo. The inherent danger of stray cattle is especially notable on the N11 Ermelo-Hendrina road, where several serious collisions have been caused by these nuisance strays. Stray cattle and animals within wards demolish gardens, tear open refuse bags and unnecessarily rile up neighborhood dogs. On previous occasions, MLM stated that residents should contact the call centre to report such incidents. However, the inefficiency of the call centre, coupled with the lackluster response time from municipal departments have made this statement all but redundant. Although the municipal by-laws grants the municipality the power to rapidly fill their coffers by impounding and selling stray animals if they are not collected by their owners, the motivation seems to be lacking for unknown reasons. MLM ignored the enquiry submitted by the Tribune regarding this matter. < Previous Article Next Article >

Speedy Mashilo, the 2018 COGTA MEC, lamented the financial mismanagement. 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 15 September 2020 In August 2018, the recovery plan was announced to deal with the two major aspects of revenue streams, namely, revenue generation strategies and creditor repayment. However, despite being adopted and implemented by local councils, the situations in Emalahleni, Lekwa, Msukaligwa, Mkhondo and Govan Mbeki local municipalities have exponentially worsened while being under a provincial intervention. Due to the failure of municipalities in Mpumalanga, and the mounting debt accrued by these entities due to financial mismanagement and failure to collect revenue, a financial recovery plan intervention announced in August 2018. The recovery plan was announced to deal with the two major aspects of revenue streams, namely, revenue generation strategies and creditor repayment. However, despite being adopted and implemented by local councils, the situations in Emalahleni, Lekwa, Msukaligwa, Mkhondo and Govan Mbeki local municipalities have exponentially worsened while being under a provincial intervention. It has also been cited that City of Mbombela, Thaba Chweu, Emalahleni and Govan Mbeki are calssified as financially non-viable municipalities in the province. At the time, Emalahleni municipality owed Eskom R2,3 billion and was owed R3,8 billion by consumer debtors. “Despite being under the provincial intervention, these amounts increased substantially in the space of one year, to owing Eskom R3,5 billion and being owed R4,6 billion for services at the end of December 2019,” Grovè Morgan said. She said Govan Mbeki Local Municipality owed Eskom R1 billion, and was owed R1,4 billion for services which were provided until the end of December 2018. Since this announcement, the debt from municipalities have grown beyond control. Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) spokesperson, George Mthethwa, urged those who have an interest in the effective functionality of Mpumalanga municipalities to mobilize communities to pay for municipal services. “Local government is a regulated sphere or policy directed. What is crucial is that the financial distress that our municipalities find themselves in are due, in part, to the failure of some communities to pay for services. That is, non-payment of electricity and water. Unfortunately, the majority of our municipalities are grant dependent and payment of services is a revenue stream that must sustain them. However, if no revenue derived from the payment, then the financial position of the municipalities is affected.” Mthethwa stated. < Previous Article Next Article >
