Caring businesses fork out to patch up Havenga Road 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 18 January 2022 MAN Truck and Bus supplied food and cold drinks to the teams on site, and Van Wettens towing services supplied the diesel. While Msukaligwa Local Municipality fails consistently to provide service delivery, roleplayers within the community took hands to improve the conditions of Havenga Road. This roadway, which is a designated heavy vehicle route, has degraded to nothing but sinkholes and loose soil due to the lack of maintenance from the municipality. SG Coal Breyten, PC’s Sand, MAN Truck and Bus and Van Wettens Towing had enough of the shoddy roadway, and repaired the road surface to make it easier for road users to traverse. MAN Truck and Bus supplied food and cold drinks to the teams on site, and Van Wettens towing services supplied the diesel. Businesses such as these, who open their hearts to better the situation for all, are greatly appreciated by the Ermelo community. - Information supplied < Previous Article Next Article >

Wessel Road ready for action 1/4 Share GK CRONJE 21 September 2021 The resulting court order entailed that repairs to Wessel Road, by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), had to be completed within 180 days within the date of the court order. The rehabilitation of Wessel Road has reached its finishing stages, and was officially opened to road users on Thursday, 16 September 2021. Businesses and motorists alike have expressed a sigh of relief, after years of struggling with the ghastly road conditions. The rehabilitation of the road came after Burlec Electrical had it in chunks with the conditions of the road, which had led to many businesses in this area experiencing a loss of clients due to issues of accessibility. A resulting court order entailed that repairs to Wessel Road, by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), had to be completed within 180 days within the date of the court order. Burlec Electrical had been the sole funder of all the legal costs, inclusive of the costs of the Traffic Engineer that was appointed to assess Wessel Road. In a twist of fate, the court order also held Msukaligwa Municipality accountable for Burlec’s taxed costs. Read more in next week’s edition of the Tribune ePaper about the the future of Wessel Road. An enquiry will be sent to MLM regarding the cleanup of the worksite and removal of the building rubble in the adjacent field, rounding off of the roadway (curbs and sidewalks), as well as the maintenance plan from MLM to ensure that the newly reconstructed road is kept in shape, and not left to the dogs. - MBCF sets hardball plan into motion | tribune-newspaper
MBCF sets hardball plan into motion 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 16 August 2022 Over R300 million is blown on salaries, with the municipality employing more than 50 “managers” amongst the staff. The Msukaligwa Business & Community Forum (MBCF) unveiled their plan of forcing service delivery from Msukaligwa Local Municipality during a meeting at the Ermelo Inn on Wednesday, 10 August 2022. A satisfactory turnout of residents and business owners marked the event, where the chairperson, Janice Conradie, set forth the plan of action. Conradie stated that the municipality is on the verge of complete collapse, unless drastic measures are implemented. Part of the plan to force delivery of services include, but are not limited to a mass dispute of faulty accounts across the board and a plan to have residents and businesses withhold payments to put pressure on the municipality to step up to the plate. Conradie also told the Tribune that Gert Sibande District Municipality will be involved, and the matter will be escalated to a provincial and national level. A high level meeting with Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is also on the schedule. However, the complacency of the residents and businesses in Ermelo needs to come to and end if the plan is to be successfully implemented. Every resident needs to take a stand against the municipality, which consistently fails to deliver their mandated service. Rampant corruption, politicking and constant infighting has a bleak and distressing effect on Ermelo and the Msukaligwa region. Mismanagement and a lack of strong, honest and consistent leadership has the municipality sinking at an alarming rate. According to the MBCF, the municipality is more than R200 million in arrears with their Eskom account, hence the frustrating load reduction. In addition to the monthly bill they have to service, they have to fork out an additional 15% interest on the arrears amount. Over R300 million is blown on salaries, with the municipality employing more than 50 “managers” amongst the staff. This alone takes a huge chunk of the flimsy operating budget. Conradie also says that the municipality has over R20 million allocated for the installation of new, modern water meters, but they fail to utilize the funds in a manner that is seen fit. The new meters would eliminate the need of manual water meter readings, and would also halt the illegal practice of estimating water usage figures. Shockingly, the municipality also owes the Rand Water Board close to R1 billion, despite the municipality going on record on several previous occasions, stating that the account is serviced sufficiently. The MBCF implores residents to apply for membership, as a large collective of residents are needed to get the plan off the ground. Conradie has told the Tribune that they are convening with higher authorities, as well as their advocate, to compile a clear, concise and comprehensive plan of action to be launched at the next meeting, which is to be announced soon. The date will be made available as soon as all affairs are in order. You may view the video of the meeting on our Facebook page, Tribune Ermelo. < Previous Article Next Article >
< Previous Article Next Article >

After the failed submission, Mr. Mndebele, appointed in 2018, was suspended with immediate effect during a virtual council meeting. He was suspended with full salary. The director for community service, Ms. Tshabalala, has been pointed as acting municipal manager. GMM municipal manager’s appointment snuffed out Mr. Mndebele, appointed in 2018, was suspended with immediate effect during a virtual council meeting. The GMM executive mayor, Ms Ngxonono. Mr. Mndebele, appointed in 2018, was suspended with immediate effect during a virtual council meeting. 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 8 September 2020 After the failed submission, Mr. Mndebele, appointed in 2018, was suspended with immediate effect during a virtual council meeting. He was suspended with full salary. The director for community service, Ms. Tshabalala, has been pointed as acting municipal manager. The embattled Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) has once again stepped on toes, and now has even more fires to put out. The municipality has been bent to breaking point due to maladaministration, claims of cadre employment, financial mismanagement and gross negligence of service delivery, coupled with a staggeringly high amount of Eskom debt and failure to honor repayment agreements with electrical giant. This has led to a drastic reduction of the NMD to the municipality, with residents and business suffering the consequences with extended rational load shedding from the municipality. GMM has now missed the deadline for the submission of the Annual Financial Statements (AFS) to the National Treasury and Auditor General. This after it was granted extension to get its affairs in order. The GMM executive mayor, Ms Ngxonono, had called on the municipal manager at the time, Mr. Mndebele, to intensify service delivery in the area, and has called on the MM and his administration to ensure that the issue of the AFS is sorted out. The Democratic Alliance has expressed its disappointment that Ms. Ngxonono could not give a date when the municipality will finally submit the outstanding 2018/19 AFS to the National Treasury and the Auditor General. After the failed submission, Mr. Mndebele, appointed in 2018, was suspended with immediate effect during a virtual council meeting. He was suspended with full salary. The director for community service, Ms. Tshabalala, has been pointed as acting municipal manager. However, the woes experienced by the failing municipality is far from over, as more institution and residents are rising up and taking a stand against the daily deterioration of service delivery, especially in Bethal and eMbalenhle. Constant power cuts and waste collection are at the heart of the qualms, and numerous new organizations have started mobilizing against the municipality. Calls for the municipality to be placed under administration have been voiced, coupled with several pending court cases. The GMM Joint Civil Movement is one of the institutions ate the forefront of the rise, claiming that constitutional rights are being viciously attacked by the ineptitude of GMM. < Previous Article Next Article >

- Havenga Road gone to hell in a handbasket
"We are the ones losing clients and business, yet we have to dig into our wallets to assist the municipality." Havenga Road gone to hell in a handbasket 1/6 Share GK CRONJE 11 January 2022 "We are the ones losing clients and business, yet we have to dig into our wallets to assist the municipality." Scores of residents, along with heavy vehicle drivers, have lamented the shoddy state of Havenga Road. Motorists are forced to drive on the sidewalk to avoid the ghastly sinkholes and potholes. Some of the sinkholes measure up to 50 centimeters in depth, and some of these sinkholes cause the mud flaps and belly plates from heavy vehicles to scrape on what remains of the road. The road conditions have deteriorated to such an extent that various heavy vehicle drivers have a had close calls being bogged down by their load, and all drivers have an amazingly stressful time navigating the maze of sinkholes. The road surface virtually nonexistent, with motorists having to take detours, or face the offroad track that is Havenga Road. Recent rainfall has highlighted the utter lack of maintenance and upkeep from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) of this designated heavy vehicle route. Msukaligwa Local Municipality's spokesman, Mandla Zwane, has stated in December 2021 that the municipality had plans on making the road traversable with the assistance of local businesses. Alas, the roadway is currently in an exponentially worse condition due to the rainfall experienced. Several local businesses have, however, expressed their dissatisfaction at the fact that MLM comes crawling tail between the legs for assistance when service delivery situations get financially too hot to handle. “It is funny that the municipality only acknowledges big roleplayers in the Ermelo business and mining sectors when they are in need of assistance. We have been nagging at the municipality to take action with regards to Havenga Road, to maintain the surface and to make repairs before the road surface is too far gone;” a local business owner, who chooses to remain anonymous, lamented. “We have had several meetings with the officials at the municipality to avoid Havenga Road becoming a second Wessels Road lawsuit. However, nobody paid any heed, and all we as business owners were offered were half-hearted heaps of soil ditched in the sinkholes. The municipality did not even care enough to compact the soil. Months later, and now business owners and mining businesses are requested to assist with materials and machinery. To what end? It is clear that we, as business sector, are being misused. We are the ones losing clients and business, yet we have to dig into our wallets to assist the municipality, who is already pocketing and clearly wasting our rates and taxes, along with skyhigh water and electricity bills that we have to fork out every month. They are getting to the end of their rope and I don’t even feel a tinge of remorse for refusing to assist them in any way.” Road users are warned to the fact that smaller, deceptively deep potholes may be waterlogged, and pose a danger to unaware motorists further aggravates the situation. The shocking state of Havenga Road. You may view more photos and videos on our Facebook page, Tribune Ermelo. < Previous Article Next Article >
