Cassim Park shopping complex now lawless badlands 1/4 Share GK CRONJE 30 June 2022 One of the business owners in the area lamented that state of the complex, and dangers inherent with the regression. The Cassim Park Complex in has, over the past several years, systematically regressed to a crime-ridden rotten spot in the once-glorious Cassim Park. Despite a constant barrage of complaints from residents and business owners, Msukaligwa Local Municipality turns a blind eye and a deaf ear. Upon visiting the complex, one’s nose is greeted with a hearty serving of old, rank urine, mixed with rotting refuse that lone the sidewalk and roadway. Makeshift testing grounds sees lumbering heavy vehicles crunch over shards of broken liquor bottles, while unsavory characters skulk around in and around the dilapidated buildings. At the centre of the complex, a group of vagrants have staked out the charred husk of a building, which they now call home. The outside walls are blackened with soot from daily fires made to melt down cable casings to get to the valuable innards, while the inside of the building is wrought with human faeces, old blankets and refuse. Any item of value has long been stripped from the walls, and the PVC drainage pipes, both interior and exterior, have been reduced to ash by the flames. A lonely, stripped wreckage of a vehicle has, oddly, also made an appearance. Piles of wiring that holds no monetary value is left smoldering, while vagrants loot the surrounding businesses for anything of value. Miraculously, the few remaining mast lights still stand tall, but have been out of order for several years, encouraging criminal behavior in the dead of night. Heaps upon heaps of liquor bottles and other manner of refuse are dumped on site by unknown individuals, including garden refuse. One would assume that the lack of service delivery in Cassim Park attributes to the dumping of refuse, as the municipal refuse collection service often fails to do rounds, or leave entire wards uncollected. The absence of municipal refuse bins and skip bins also contribute to the ghastly state of the area, as litterbugs have a field day. One of the business owners in the area lamented that state of the complex, and dangers inherent with the regression. “The state in which this complex, and Cassim Park as whole, finds itself in is nothing short of a travesty. If only the mast lights were to be operational, at least we’d have some peace of mind at night. But, alas, this is not the case. Our businesses and premises are being ransacked on a weekly basis by criminals looking for scrap metal to trade. In one of these buildings, a pop-up scrap dealer has opened its doors, and in my opinion, directly contributes to the soaring crime rate in Cassim Park. I’m not sure if the dealer is operating legally, but I do know that it really impacts the crime rate. Time after time I have caught brigands on my premises, looting anything of value to go and sell. It’s a pain for by business, as well as many others. The fact that we face constant electrical outages due to dilapidated junction boxes only aggravates the situation. It’s as if the municipality simply does not care what happens to their residents.” he stated. The Tribune lodged an enquiry with Msukaligwa Local Municipality regarding the state of affairs, as well as the issue regarding the mast lights. Following the gang-related fatal stabbing of a student at Cebisa Secondary School in Wesselton on Tuesday, 16 August 2022, the eyes of the country are on the government to take action. Mpumalanga education MEC, Bonakele Majuba, condemned the incident, and also conveyed his sincere condolences to the bereaved family. “Regrettably, the stabbed learner succumbed to his injuries at Ermelo Provincial Hospital. It is alleged that the learners belonged to different troublesome gangs in the township,” the department said in a statement. The suspect is a fellow student, and has since been arrested on a farm between Ermelo and Breyten. MEC Majuba visited the school on this morning, together with Mpumalanga Community Safety and Security MEC, Vusi Shongwe, and other officials, who rendered psychosocial assistance to all who are affected by the incident. During the visit, it was also announced that an imbizo will be hosted at the Wesselton Stadium on 28 August 2022. The imbizo will commence at 11:00. Die burgerregteorganisasie AfriForum het onlangs ’n nuwe buurtwag in Ermelo gestig, met die buurtwagbestuur wat bestaan uit Heinrich Jansen van Rensburg (voorsitter) en Frikkie du Plessis (koördineerder). Hoërskool Ermelo het vanaf 23 tot 26 September weereens‘n insiggewende en suksesvolle Errieraadskamp te u-Bhetyan-o-Africa aangebied. Die lesings oor onder andere konflik hantering en spanbou-aktiwiteite wat spanwerk bevorder het, en talle ander uitdagings wat die leerders geforseer het om kreatief te dink, het die raad bemagtig om as ‘n groen eenheid te funksioneer. Die Errieraad is slag gereed vir 2021, asook om met trots vertoon vensters van Hoërskool Ermelo te wees. Ulrich Paquet is a South African Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning veteran, with over 10 years experience and service. He took some time to talk to the Grade 11 and 12 learners about his interesting area of expertise. He’s the co-founder of “The Deep Learning Indaba”, an organisation whose mission is to strengthen Machine Learning & Artificial intelligence in Africa. Ulrich holds a PhD in Machine Learning from the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory, and had worked at several tech companies such as Microsoft, where he developed the core of Microsoft recommender system, managed a team at VocallQ which was later acquired by Apple, and recommender team for XBOX (a definite highlight; the XBOX One launch). Liggies neem deel by die Sizwe ASA Senior Kampioenskappe 1/2 Share SH HATTINGH 27 April 2021 In die semi-finaal het Kwanele die voorreg gehad om in dieselfde lopie as die bekende Wayde van Niekerk te hardloop. Kwanele Nkambule het die afgelope naweek 15-18 April aan die Sizwe ASA Senior Kampioenskappe in Pretoria by Tuks se High Performance Centre deelgeneem. Hy het die 200m van die uitdunrondte in 21.66 sekondes voltooi, en gekwalifiseer vir die semi-finale. In die semi-finaal het Kwanele die voorreg gehad om in dieselfde lopie as die bekende Wayde van Niekerk te hardloop. 'n Tasbare gees van opwinding het op Donderdag, 25 Augustus, by Hoërskool Ermelo geheers ten tyde van die verkiesing en bekendstelling van 2023 se leierrade, naamlik die Errieraad, koshuisrade asook die graadverteenwoordigers. Die optrede het te Roodepoort teater in Johannesburg plaasgevind, op 14 Augustus 2021. “Kettings” vertel die verhaal van `n dogter wat haarself moet vergewe. Deur die loop van die verhaal praat sy met drie karakters/spoke, mense van haar verlede wat oorlede is. Deur hierdie gesprekke vind sy bevryding, en is dit vir haar moontlik om meer en meer kettings van haarself af te haal. Janneke de Villiers het die hoofrol vertolk, en Lohan Coetzee het die rol van die beste vriend gespeel. René Walters het die rol van haar ma gespeel, en Marzé du Plessis het die rol van haar sussie gespeel. Die toneel is `n kombinasie van digkuns, sang, ballet en drama. Die optrede het te Roodepoort teater in Johannesburg plaasgevind, op 14 Augustus 2021. Mari Molefe van Heerden en Pietie Beyers was as beoordelaars aangewys, en Janneke de Villiers, Lohan Coetzee, René Walters en Marzé du Plessis was betrokke by die toneelspel. FF Plus to approach COGTA amidst Bethal falling apart 1/1 Share CONTENT SUPPLIED 11 August 2020 Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, which comprises Bethal, Charl Cilliers, Embalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda and Trichardt, has become unmanageable due to the great number of towns that have to be provided with services by this municipality. Media Statement - The FF Plus in Mpumalanga has initiated a process to have Bethal, which is burdened with poor service delivery and a general lack of maintenance, established as a smaller, more manageable municipal unit. Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, which comprises Bethal, Charl Cilliers, Embalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda and Trichardt, has become unmanageable due to the great number of towns that have to be provided with services by this municipality. For this reason, the FF Plus will send official letters to the provincial MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mandla Msibi, and to the Municipal Demarcation Board requesting, in terms of the Municipal Structures and Municipal Demarcation Acts, that the relevant municipal borders must be redefined so that Bethal can start functioning as a smaller, independent municipality. Bethal is being treated like an unwanted stepchild by Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, and the town's loyal taxpayers have no access to proper service delivery. During a recent visit to Bethal, it was evident that no attempts are made to address the various problems experienced in the town. Since 28 January 2020, the two large pump stations are pumping sewage into the Blesbokspruit (a tributary that flows into the Vaal River) after another pump was removed and was never repaired or replaced. The Bethal Dam, which was previously used for water sports, is polluted with sewage and people have been warned not to make use of the water source. In some areas, live electric wires are exposed and overground cables are being used underground, which, according to some sources, contributes to the frequent power outages that last up to 18 hours. In the FF Plus's view, a smaller and more locally focused local government system is the answer to poor service delivery. The ANC government has proven time and again that bigger budgets only lead to more mismanagement, theft and corruption and less service delivery for taxpayers. < Previous Article Next Article >
