WOF ready to tackle Fire Season 1/3 Share GK CRONJE ​ The WOF Programme is celebrating 18 years of sustainability. More than 450 veld and forest firefighters from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Working on Fire Programme in Mpumalanga are ready for the Winter Fire Season. Working on Fire Mpumalanga concluded their week-long Yellow Card Assessment Camps on Sunday, 10 April 2022, as preparations for the season are in full swing. Teams from the Highveld region, namely Piet Retief, Wakkerstroom, Volksrust, Ermelo, Breyten, Badplaas, Warburton, Balfour, Mayflower, Belfast, and Loskop took part in Yellow Card Assessment Camps at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Ermelo. Teams in the Lowveld region, namely Dullstroom, Nelspruit, Barberton, Lydenburg, Lefpa, Nkomazi, Wilgeboom, Salique, Injaka, Graskop, Mlambongwane and Waterval Boven completed their assessment at the Kishugu Training Academy in Mbomela. In Secunda, the Sasol team concluded their training at their base, the Sasol Fuel plant, on Tuesday, 12 April 2022. The two Lowveld and Highveld camps ran concurrently with teams taking turns at the camps, in adherence to the COVID-19 regulations. The annual Yellow Card assessments ensure firefighters are theoretically and practically trained for the upcoming Winter Fire Season, which begins in June, and ends in October. The training consisted of a fitness assessment, which included the 2.4 kilometre run, sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups. Firefighters were also theoretically assessed with tests, and practically assessed on various firefighting techniques, which include a firewall and line construction, just to name a few. The assessments end with a route march, in which teams participate in a 10 kilometre march, to test their endurance and strength as they can be expected to go for long hours combating fire on the fire line. “Our firefighters are ready to assist partners, Fire Protection Associations, and stakeholders in fire suppression operations. We urge landowners to get in contact with us so we can assist with our much-sought-after Integrated Fire Management Services, which include amongst others, prescribed burning, manual fuel load reduction, community fire awareness education, and fire suppression plans,” WOF Mpumalanga Communication Officer, Ms Amanda Mthembu, said. “We urge communities to be more vigilant during this fire season, and to not start unnecessary fires, particularly during the dry and cold days this winter. We appeal to community members to remove unnecessary rubble on their properties, which can pose a serious fire risk. Properties next to grasslands need to ensure there are sufficient fire breaks between their properties and these grasslands,” Ms Mthembu concluded. The Working on Fire Programme is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), and is funded by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment. MM lays down her reigns 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 10 February 2021 Her formidable stature within the ranks placed her as a beacon of excellence within the municipality, often lauded for her no-nonsense approach to issues faced. The community as a whole, as well as the staff and management of Msukaligwa Municipality was left flabbergasted following the sudden passing of the municipal manager, Ms Gladness Majola. Ms Majola’s untimely demise was announced on Saturday, 6 February 2021. Ms Majola, born on 13 September 1970, was appointed as municipal manager of Msukaligwa Municipality in November 2018, serving a four year contract. She took over from acting municipal manager, Mr S.R. Magudulela, and caught the community and her employees by surprise with her vast work experience in senior positions, and her determination to find solutions to issues as speedily and efficiently as possible. Her formidable stature within the ranks placed her as a beacon of excellence within the municipality, often lauded for her no-nonsense approach to issues faced. With a Bachelor of Law degree, Advanced Certificate, Certificate in Executive Municipal Management and Leadership, Project Management, Municipal Service Partnership, Supply Chain Management for Municipal Senior Managers, 16 years experience in senior management and seven years as Deputy Director-General Corporate Services in the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, she has been a stalwart of service delivery during her term as municipal manager. Condolences continues to flood in from community members, friends and family, who are all left reeling in the wake of these tragic events. Die AfriForum-tak in Ermelo het in Februarie voortgegaan met sy projek by die Pre-Primêre Skool JJ van der Merwe, waar ’n buiteklaskamer vir die kleuters gebou word. Die tak het gehelp met die tweede fase van die projek, deur ’n dak op te rig bo-oor die plaveisel wat verlede maand vir die buiteklaskamer gelê is. Die buiteklaskamer is vir die kleuters ’n groot aanwins omdat verjaarsdae en aktiwiteite daar gehou kan word. Die Ermelo-tak se betrokkenheid by projekte soos hierdie skep hoop in die gemeenskap. “Wat ’n groot voorreg is dit nie vir ons om die tweede fase van die projek af te handel met die wete dat die klaskamer nou gereed is vir die kinders om te gebruik nie. WOF MPU prepares for Winter Fire Season 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 13 April 2021 These camps ensure the 24 WOF Mpumalanga teams are mentally and physically fit going into the season. Firefighters are physically and theoretically assessed, and when successful, receive Yellow Cards at the end of the camps. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Working on Fire Programme continues to live by its objective of restoring dignity to the disadvantaged youth in marginalised communities. This was evident when Working on Fire Mpumalanga recently conducted a recruitment drive at various towns across the province, in preparations for the upcoming Winter Fire Season. Selections were conducted under strict COVID-19 protocols and regulations, with hopefuls put through the rigorous WOF fitness test of a 2.4 kilometre run, push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups. A total of 45 new recruits were selected, giving previously unemployed youth entry into the employment sector. The new recruits will undergo specialised veld and forest firefighting training through the Kishugu Training Academy, in Nelspruit. Upon completion, they report back to their respective bases to top up existing teams. This ensures Working on Fire teams are at full strength going into the fire season. The province also took the team drivers and Safety Health and Environment Representatives (SHE Reps) to refresher training workshops at the Kishugu Academy, where they polished up on their theoretical education to ensure best practices at their bases. The Working on Fire Yellow Card Training Assessment Camps is set to take place in April. These camps ensure the 24 WOF Mpumalanga teams are mentally and physically fit going into the season. Firefighters are physically and theoretically assessed, and when successful, receive Yellow Cards at the end of the camps. Toil and trouble for motorists in Camden Avenue 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 17 August 2021 The drivers of these heavy vehicles are supposedly liable to a fine of R1500, and traffic officials do an excellent job at clamping down on a large number of heavy vehicles in the CBD. Alas, the lament of the residential wards seem to be the least of MLM’s worries. “What are they even doing in the residential area? I mean, there are traffic officers who live near here, who drive past these trucks every day. Nothing is being done. The municipality ignores our pleas, and the traffic department couldn’t be bothered.” These are the words of a frustrated resident in De Bruin Park, where several self-titled businessmen park their heavy vehicles at night, lining the streets and obstructing the traffic flow. During the early morning rush hour traffic, these lumbering vehicles have been reported driving carelessly, ignoring stop siggns and traffic lights, making u-turns in front of oncoming traffic, and being a general nuisance to the residents in the area. “I can’t see if there are oncoming traffic when I exit my yard, because my view is blocked by a heavy vehicle which is parked on the sidewalk. It’s very dangerous, and nothing is being done about it.” Camden Avenue is known for its motorists who travel at unacceptably high speed, and often disregard the rules of the road. These dangerous drivers, coupled with the heavy vehicles that have no business being in a residential area, is a recipe for disaster. Despite the issue being raised with Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) on several occasions, the issue persists, and has, in fact, worsened. Heavy vehicles, which transport coal, large loads and often livestock, can be spotted in Camden Avenue on a daily basis. These heavy vehicles have on several occasions been deemed as a danger to road users and pedestrians, especially college students and children whose parents reside in the Autumn Ridge security village. Heavy vehicle drivers have, on numerous occasions, been spotted double parking on the sidewalks to offload passengers, damaging curbs and street signs by misjudging turns, driving at excessively high or low speeds, in both cases frustrating motorists to a large extent. This issue is, however, not confined to De Bruin Park, as there are several wards in Ermelo East where heavy vehicles are parked in the road at night, and often detach their trailers, leaving it on the roadside as an accident waiting to happen. Vuurwapenamnestie verleng tot 2021 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 24 November 2020 Die vuurwapenamnestie wat einde Julie vir 'n tydperk van ses maande deur die parlement goedgekeur is, het op 1 Augustus 2020 begin en duur tot 31 Januarie 2021. Die beperkings van vlakke 5 en 4 het mense verhinder om onwettige, sowel as hul ongelisensieerde en ongewenste vuurwapens en ammunisie in te lewer. Die vuurwapenamnestie wat einde Julie vir 'n tydperk van ses maande deur die parlement goedgekeur is, het op 1 Augustus 2020 begin en duur tot 31 Januarie 2021. Die vorige amnestietydperk, wat ook vir 'n tydperk van ses maande bedoel was, is ontspoor deur die onverwagse COVI-19-pandemie, maar ten spyte hiervan het die Suid-Afrikaanse polisiediens (SAPD) 'n totaal van 46 714 vuurwapens ontvang. Die amnestietydperk skep 'n geleentheid vir lede van die publiek om ongewenste vuurwapens, of vuurwapens wat onwettig besit word, aan die SAPD oor te gee sonder om bang te wees dat hulle vervolg sal word. Diegene wat hul vuurwapens gedurende die periode van amnestie oorgee, moet die nodige vorms invul en onderteken by die naaste polisiekantoor, en moet aandring op 'n afskrif van die SAPS 548 (Amnestie-vorm). Agriculture in South Africa, as well as the world, is on the verge of a new approach. That was the main message and theme of the annual congress of TLU SA, hosted recently. Due to lockdown regulations, the congress was hosted virtually for the first time this year, and regions and affiliations could attend via Zoom. The exiting president, Mr. Louis Meintjes, called on farmers to become more involved to ensure the existence of agriculture in the future. “I think the critical question is: Will you take part or will you stay behind? Are you changing or stagnating? Will you be more profitable or bankrupt?” Meintjes asked. Prof. Andrè Duvenhage, the Research Director of Social Transformation at the North-West University, confirmed this train of thought. “The situation will most probably only become worse going forward. The farming community is dependent on themself and self-help, and self-management looks like the best solution.” he stated. Prof. Duvenhage aslo warned that the amendment of Article 25, relating to land expropriation without compensation, would go ahead, and groups like the BLF and EFF will take matters into their own hands to cause widespread anarchy. “It is now the time to stand with each other and support each other. Build bridges to each other as agricultural organisations. Build bridges to each other as farmers. It is also the time to come up with alternative plans. It is the challenge of the new leadership of TLU SA to adjust to the changing circumstances to stay relevant in fundamental issues and to further the interests of farmers in all fields of life.” he concluded. Winter Fire Season draws to a close 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 9 November 2021 The globally recognized WOF Programme is also celebrating 18 years of its existence. The 2020/2021 Winter Fire Season officially drew to a close on 31 October 2021. However, the Department of Fisheries, Forestries and the Environments Working on Fire Programme’s firefighters remain on standby and ready to assist partners, Fire Protection Associations, and landowners in Integrated Fire Management Services. The season officially began on 1 June 2021, however, Working on Fire Mpumalanga’s 24 teams attended to fire suppression operations prior to the official opening. The teams, based in the Lowveld and Highveld, assisted in a total of 267 fires throughout the season. This is a decline from the previous season, where teams assisted in 288 fires. WOF Mpumalanga General Manager, Martin Bolton, gave acknowledgment to valued stakeholders, partners, management and especially the teams on a job well done, adding: “Well done to our firefighters and management for persevering through the season, while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Your tremendous support and work are noted and celebrated.” The WOF Programme shifts its attention and resources to the Western and Eastern Cape, where the Summer Fire Season begins on 1 December 2021. The provinces have been hard at work with preparations and have concluded their Yellow Card Training Assessment and Fire Safety Campaigns. Football explodes on the local scene 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 10 May 2022 The aim is to get sponsors for all sporting codes in Wesselton / Ermelo to keep our young ones encouraged and motivated to do good. The town has now become a great space of football, and the culture seems to be taking the town by storm, That’s a great sight for sponsors, soccer fans and other community stake holders. On 27 April 2022 we saw a great display of football shown by two major radio stations in town, VOCFM 102.9 and Ligwa FM 101.3, jointly with Ermelo Taxi Association and Abagcotshwa United FC (abafundisi), then Ermelo Masters FC and Gunners FC (from Ekasi Social League-Masters), that sealed the deal with a good football to spice up things on the tournament. What a way to celebrate Freedom Day, with a group of positive men, teaming up together to make the day possible and conducive to all. The sport worked as glue that brought everyone together, and people from different spheres came together as one unit. All thanks to Saks Sam and Raff IVundraz for championing the day, big up to Ntokozo Tokyo Siluma for such a great spirit shown in and outside the pitch, we appreciate you gentlemen.
