Op 24 Oktober het Hoërskool Ermelo hulle jaarlikse seremonie gehou waar die Graad 11’s hul streepbaadjies ontvang het. Die spesiale funksie behels die oorhandiging van EHS se kenmerkende streepbaadjies aan volgende jaar se matrieks. Die leerders antwoord op ‘n erekode, waarna hulle op die verhoog staan en hul ouers die geleentheid kry om die gewone groen baadjie te vervang met die besondere streepbaadjie. Die simboliese waarde hiervan is iets wat die Erries na aan die hart lê. Dit dui aan dat jy as Graad 12-leerder deel is van die leiers van die EHS en ‘n voorbeeld stel vir dié wat na jou moet opkyk. EFF councillors, however, raised the question as to why new schools are being built while the existing schools are literally falling apart. On Friday, 18 February 2022, Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) presented their integrated development plan (IDP) to ward councillors, private and public sectors, and all interested parties. Various departments were present during the day, en provided updates on the progress of the projects. The meeting launched with roughly fifty individuals present, but in less than an hour the numbers dwindled to approximately twenty. The budget presentations from various departments was nothing to write home about, with a large amount of the various budgets not utilized despite the Msukaligwa boundaries being rife with shoddy roads, electrical infrastructure issues, water supply and sewerage network issues and more. The Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), with an allocated amount of R55 million, which aims to eradicate municipal infrastructure backlogs in poor communities to ensure the provision of basic services such as water, sanitation and electricity, has an expenditure of 44%. Thus, nearly half of the grant had not been utilized, despite poor households facing a daily struggle with basic services. Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG), with an allocated amount of R50 million, is a conditional grant, providing funding to municipalities for the purpose of achieving water supply goals. Ermelo, Breyten, Wesselton and Chrissiesmeer experience water issues on a daily basis, with dilapidated network infrastructure and non-functional pumps being a major contributor. Some residents in Breyten and Chrissiesmeer has been left without potable water and sporadically dry taps for nearly a year. Alarmingly, Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) had only spent 32% of the allocated funds, begging the question as to why residents are suffering as they are. The biggest question mark is the Integrated National Electrification (INEP) grant, with an allocated amount of R10 million, which provides capital subsidies to the municipality to address the electrification backlog of permanently occupied households. This grant had only been 6% spent. This means that the dilapidated infrastructure, and the myriads of households which are not electrified, is a direct result of MLM grossly underutilizing funds. Of MLM’s own budget, a mere 34% had been spent. While Ermelo and the surrounding areas crumble, with businesses and residents digging into their own pockets to repair roads and potholes, having to hire private contractors to repair street lights, and an overall lack of basic service delivery due to “a shoestring budget”, as stated by the municipality, the entity sits on over R10 million of unspent funds, with an allocated amount of R16 million. A mere 34% had been utilized. The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) has been instated for creating work opportunities in public environment. For instance, employment opportunities for locals can be created by assigning, as an example, maintenance of roadsides, parks, public spaces and more. The Department of Sports and Culture announced a new library that is planned for Ermelo, at a cost of R20 million. This had the feathers of councillors ruffled, as the existing libraries are neglected, yet, another library is to be constructed. The Ermelo library is grossly neglected, and the need for an additional library was put into question. This will simply put yet another expenditure on the plate of MLM in terms of upkeep and maintenance. Good news is that both Davel and Waburton will see new libraries built, with the same amount budgeted for each. Funds have been allocated for the maintenance of Cassim Park library. Most troubling is the fact that a number of ward councillors left mid-meeting without asking questions, providing input or highlighting issues within their wards. This wholly defeats the purpose of being a representative of a ward within Ermelo, as issues are not addressed or highlighted by the responsible ward councillors. Breyten water outage update 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 2 March 2021 Refurbishment and upgrade of the Breyten Water Treatment Works to the tune of R6.6 million. Media Statement - Breyten / KwaZanele and Chressiesmeer / KwaChibikhulu obtains water from the Torbanite Dam, which is also supplied with water from the Usutu-Transfer Pipeline line via the Upper Komati Pipeline from Camden power station at 1.43 Ml/d. The Water Treatment Works has a capacity and/or purify 3ML per day. The current demand of the area fluctuates according to the season, and is between 7ML per day during high season, and drops to 5,3ML per day during the winter months. The Water Treatment Works supplies water to the following reservoirs namely Tower (0.75ML), Breyten (0.75Ml), Chaina (1Ml), KwaZanele (5Ml) and Chrissiesmeer Reservoir (0.75ML) Steel. Breyten Reservoir supplies Breyten town, Chaina Reservoir supplies Chaina / Thabo., KwaZanele Reservoir supplies the whole of KwaZanele location, and Chrissiesmeer Reservoir supplies Chrissiesmeer and KwaChibikhulu. Due to the topology of the area and insufficient existing storage facilities, the high lying areas experienced low water pressure or no water from time to time. In resolving the above, Msukaligwa Local Municipality appointed a contractor for the refurbishment and upgrade of the Breyten Water Treatment Works to the tune of R6.6 million. The site was handed over on 31 August 2020. The work commenced on 1 September 2020. The specific scope of work during the shutdown included inter alia the following: De-slugging of the sedimentation tank and inlet channel to filters, replacement of the 3 (three) de-slugging values and placement of filter media in filter three. Installation of telemetric system and construction of the plinth and clearview fence around the generator. Installing of standby pump in the Torbanite dam and refurbishment of pumps at the Torbanite pump room. Installation of generator at Breyten WTW. Installation of an elevated steel tank. The de-slugging will optimize supply of water to the Water Treatment Works, and as results alleviate the intermittent water interruptions in Breyten and KwaZanele. During this period the affected areas / high lying area is supplied with water through water tankers. Communities are urged not to pay water from water tanks, as this water is for free. If they are made to pay for the water, they must report this to their councillors. The municipality appeals to all affected people to bear with us during period. The project overall progress is at 96%. The outstanding is to testing, commissioning and the handing over of the site back to the municipality. On 3 February 2021 and/or early hours of 4 February 2021, the municipality discovered that the pump at the treatment work vandalized, which exacerbated the situation in the areas. The purpose of the National Batho Pele Excellence Awards is to entrench the professionalisation of the public service, to recognize, reward and acknowledge public servants who are performing beyond their call of duty, and to encourage excellence in the public service. The ceremony took place on 30 October at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. These karatekas represents Ermelo Shotokan Karate Academy and the style organization SKISA. Both these contenders have been selected, and will partake in the upcoming SA’s. Mpumalanga trials took place in Delmas. The junior SA’s will take place in in Durban on 4-6 March 2022, and the senior SA’s will take place 1-3 April 2022 in Gauteng. NSFAS students urged to use allowances to buy devices 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 2 June 2020 Nchabeleng said the work that NSFAS is doing in support of the departmental objectives to increase the number of poor students in higher education at no cost, is noted. He said more work needs to be done around a policy that will ensure access to the category of students who belong to the ‘missing middle’. Students receiving aid from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) have been urged to use their learning material allowances to purchase learning devices so they can learn remotely during the lockdown. “Many students, who still have not bought laptops must do so, especially those who have been paid the annual teaching assistance allowance of R5 200, to buy gadgets that will facilitate their learning during this challenging time,” said the chairperson of the Select Committee on Education and Technology, Sports, Arts and Culture, Elleck Nchabeleng. NSFAS qualifying students receive learning material allowance for the year, which includes R5 200 issued once a year to beneficiaries to purchase things like laptops, tablets and books. Nchabeleng said the committee is satisfied with the proficiency and efficiency with which the NSFAS Administrator, Dr Randall Carolissen has run the entity, even during the Covid-19 distraction. The committee also welcomed the task team announced by Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister, Dr. Blade Nzimande, over the weekend. The task team will investigate challenges associated with the move to the student-centred model at NSFAS in 2017. “The intervention will enhance the work of the Administrator and improve the service to poor students. Commendable work to stabilise the student financial aid scheme is being realised, and that has been demonstrated by how allowances are being distributed to students,” Nchabeleng said. Nchabeleng said the work that NSFAS is doing in support of the departmental objectives to increase the number of poor students in higher education at no cost, is noted.
