- Wessel Road ready for action | tribune-newspaper
Wessel Road ready for action 1/4 Share GK CRONJE 21 September 2021 The resulting court order entailed that repairs to Wessel Road, by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), had to be completed within 180 days within the date of the court order. The rehabilitation of Wessel Road has reached its finishing stages, and was officially opened to road users on Thursday, 16 September 2021. Businesses and motorists alike have expressed a sigh of relief, after years of struggling with the ghastly road conditions. The rehabilitation of the road came after Burlec Electrical had it in chunks with the conditions of the road, which had led to many businesses in this area experiencing a loss of clients due to issues of accessibility. A resulting court order entailed that repairs to Wessel Road, by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), had to be completed within 180 days within the date of the court order. Burlec Electrical had been the sole funder of all the legal costs, inclusive of the costs of the Traffic Engineer that was appointed to assess Wessel Road. In a twist of fate, the court order also held Msukaligwa Municipality accountable for Burlec’s taxed costs. Read more in next week’s edition of the Tribune ePaper about the the future of Wessel Road. An enquiry will be sent to MLM regarding the cleanup of the worksite and removal of the building rubble in the adjacent field, rounding off of the roadway (curbs and sidewalks), as well as the maintenance plan from MLM to ensure that the newly reconstructed road is kept in shape, and not left to the dogs. WOF MPU prepares for Winter Fire Season 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 13 April 2021 These camps ensure the 24 WOF Mpumalanga teams are mentally and physically fit going into the season. Firefighters are physically and theoretically assessed, and when successful, receive Yellow Cards at the end of the camps. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Working on Fire Programme continues to live by its objective of restoring dignity to the disadvantaged youth in marginalised communities. This was evident when Working on Fire Mpumalanga recently conducted a recruitment drive at various towns across the province, in preparations for the upcoming Winter Fire Season. Selections were conducted under strict COVID-19 protocols and regulations, with hopefuls put through the rigorous WOF fitness test of a 2.4 kilometre run, push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups. A total of 45 new recruits were selected, giving previously unemployed youth entry into the employment sector. The new recruits will undergo specialised veld and forest firefighting training through the Kishugu Training Academy, in Nelspruit. Upon completion, they report back to their respective bases to top up existing teams. This ensures Working on Fire teams are at full strength going into the fire season. The province also took the team drivers and Safety Health and Environment Representatives (SHE Reps) to refresher training workshops at the Kishugu Academy, where they polished up on their theoretical education to ensure best practices at their bases. The Working on Fire Yellow Card Training Assessment Camps is set to take place in April. These camps ensure the 24 WOF Mpumalanga teams are mentally and physically fit going into the season. Firefighters are physically and theoretically assessed, and when successful, receive Yellow Cards at the end of the camps. All these preparations will ensure WOF Mpumalanga is ready and able to assist partners and stakeholders in WOF’s much-sought-after Integrated Fire Management Services, which includes but not limited to, fuel load reduction and fire suppression. < Previous Article Next Article >

- Air Liquide take hands with Sasol | tribune-newspaper
Air Liquide take hands with Sasol 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 20 April 2021 Both companies are targeting the first capacities to be operational by 2023 and individual projects must demonstrate a generation capacity of at least 70MW. Air Liquide and Sasol will launch a Request for Proposal (RFP) to supply 600 MW of renewable energy to their operations on the site of Secunda in South Africa, as part of their joint commitment to procure 900 MW of renewables by 2030. This will be the largest corporate RFP in South Africa for the supply of renewable energy. These capacities will in particular supply the biggest oxygen production site in the world, which Air Liquide is in the process of buying from Sasol pending the Competition Commission’s approval. The use of renewable energy will greatly contribute to the objective to reduce by 30% to 40% its CO2 emissions by 2030, in line with Air Liquide Climate Objectives and Sasol’s commitment to lower its carbon footprint. Air Liquide and Sasol will launch a common RFP to the market later this month for the procurement of the first 600 MW capacity, of which 400 MW will be allocated to Air Liquide and 200 MW to Sasol, and want to finalize the signature of long term Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) before the end of 2021. Both companies are targeting the first capacities to be operational by 2023 and individual projects must demonstrate a generation capacity of at least 70MW. The final signature of these PPAs will depend on the completion of the acquisition by Air Liquide of Sasol’s oxygen production units, which remains subject to approval by the Competition Commission. Air Liquide announced its intention to acquire and operate Sasol’s Secunda oxygen plants in July 2020. In this context, Air Liquide would operate the 16 air separation units (ASU) of this site, with an installed capacity of 42,000 tons/day, in addition to the unit it already operates today. Present on the site since 1979, Air Liquide had initially built and sold these 16 ASUs to Sasol and will invest in their modernization. In addition to the benefits this would bring in terms of safety, reliability and efficiency, the solution provided by Air Liquide would allow for a targeted reduction of 30% to 40% in CO2 emissions arising from the oxygen production within 10 years from the implementation date of the deal. Ronnie Chalmers, Air Liquide Vice-President Africa Middle East and India, said: “This call for tenders, the largest launched by the private sector in South Africa, is a major lever to the decarbonization of the Secunda air separation units. Combining operational efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions, our partnership with Sasol illustrates our capacity to work with our customers to help them lower their carbon footprint and to act in favor of the climate and local ecosystems. Climate action is at the heart of Air Liquide’s growth strategy, and we will continue to Act for a sustainable future.” Lebelo Lukhele, Sasol Chief Procurement Officer Energy Business, said: “Due to the highly integrated nature of the Secunda site and the high GHG footprint associated with the ASUs, collaboration between the companies is necessary to ensure optimal GHG reduction benefits. It is anticipated that a collaborative approach will not only result in the original Sasol commitment for the Secunda site being met, but will also be exceeded through the combined efforts.” Interested bidders may apply for access to the RFP by forwarding their company profile together with contact details to za-renewable@airliquide.com and renewable.energy@sasol.com . Applications of interest will be accepted until 23 April 2021. < Previous Article Next Article >
- The incredible story Ismail Joosub | tribune-newspaper
The incredible story Ismail Joosub 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 19 January 2021 “My achievements, however long and laborious, made me a better man. Ultimately fate will define my future, but I wouldn’t mind securing a seat in the Union Buildings.” Ismail Joosub, a 21-year-old local marvel, has quite a story to share with the world. Born into a long line of high-achievers, his family migrated from India in the 1930’s. Ismail’s grandparents moved to South Africa, and founded a fabric store whilst enduring the hardships of South Africa in that era. Ismail bears the namesake of his grandfather, and touts his grandmother as the matriarch of the family, contributing with support and council to his successes in life. Ismail’s family, however, continued the success in Ermelo by the acquisition of various properties, with hard work and honest labor being the main focus. His family were given no free reign, and accomplished their success themselves through sheer dedication. Ismail remembers himself as a shy kid, being more observant than vocal. He attended Ermelo Primary School Grades 1 through 7, and his academical focus brought with it great achievements, with Ismail being at the top of the class throughout his attending years. Ismail featured in the media on various occasions, and strangely, already had an idea in primary school as to the aim of his life, and was fascinated with power and men in suits. Ismail also expressed great interest in geopolitics within different geographical locations. His life took a turn in Grades 5 and 6, when one of his English teachers inspired him, and his mother subsequently encouraged him, to enter oratory competitions. Placing first in this competition, Ismail burst out of his shell with extraordinary confidence. He participated on provincial level speeches, and was chosen as the best orator in Mpumalanga, having a voice compared to Barack Obama. Exuding confidence, Ismail was accepted to both local high schools, but ultimately settled on Ligbron as a choice because of their technological advancements and offerings. He flew through his high school career with ease, placing top in all academic events. From there, there was no stopping Ismail, and he was awarded as second best orator in the country, and continued to climb even higher. Still keeping an eye on the global political ethos, and nurturing his passion for international law, Ismail sees his role model and influence as Henry Kissinger, President Richard Nixon’s security advisor and expert in international affairs and foreign policy. Reading books by the dozen, Ismail decided in Grade 9 to put spirituality first. He became involved on the Islamic scene, and set out on the gargantuan task of memorizing the Quran. This proved to be a grueling task due to school pressure and his various other commitments, but he continued searching for the meaning of life. “This endeavor shaped my political and legal views , the meaning of justice and the impact of religion. In Grade 11, I stepped away as the winner of all my oratory competitions. In Grade 12, I started making friends... powerful friends,” Ismail gleamed. “These included powerful men and women from the political, legal and business fields. Most importantly, my family plays a crucible role in the man I am today, especially paying honor to my father. He guided me, and counselled me on how to succeed and rise in life’s ranks. My father supported and understood me, as he still continues to support my directive in life.” Ismail said. “Ultimately, law is the choice I’d rather make, instead of politics. Law affords me the chance to make a difference in the justice issues in South Africa. Law runs in the family blood, with two of my family members in the top 10 lawyers in the country.” he said. Enrolling in the University of Pretoria in 2018, which features the best law faculty on the continent. Although enjoying the university’s challenges, Ismail had issues blending in with the hustle and bustle of Hatfield. He felt that he was not doing enough, not making as big a difference as he would have liked. Ismail decided to join the Muslim Student Association (MSA) as a key role player, and aimed on making a difference for Muslim students. He also joined the SRC to ensure that all Muslim rights were equally covered. “Delving deeper into law and legal philosophy, I joined the Law House, rising in ranks, and serving on four subcommittees in the same year. Through hard work and dedication, I passed my first year cum laude, and during my second year in 2019, I was honored with the merit of the Golden Key award, which recognises the top 15% of students in the faculty. Although having ties with Ministers in Government and Leaders of various political organizations, I still have no official political affiliation, but continue to contribute value to the functioning of various bodies on campus.” Ismail said, now on the edge of his seat. “2019 was a magical year for me. Having ties with key players, everyone knew my name, and I was touted as the next president of the country. I also have a massive social media following, airing opinions on geopolitical issues. I’ve been giving my insights for over two years, and was part of the executive council of the debate team. My second year of law brought about big life decisions, accompanied by a stellar academic record. Prevailing options are either a masters in international law, or advocacy, because of my ability to speak well, drawing massive crowds when I speak.” Ismail smiled. “I have a great interest in diplomacy, was in contact with many ambassadors on international affairs, and was on my way up. However, the COVID-19 pandemic cut short the dream ride, as all affairs are on halt, but I am still determined to make a change. I helped my father in property affairs during the lockdown period, and did terrifically well in business management during the 2020 lockdown, whilst still building and strengthening contacts. I started long length articles on various sites, and am still polishing my oratory skills. Despite the pandemic, my academic year finished with seven distinctions in law, whereafter I received a call in October 2020, from the African Union. In a brilliant twist of fate, I am now the Vice President and Media and Marketing Officer of the AU Student Commission, and may now practice my influence in real life, and online. Having the best interest of Africa at heart, I am looking at the implications of any and all events. I will be investigating human rights violations, and will be working to let liberty shine as a beacon.” Ismail said. “I have recently been contacted by some of the biggest law firms on the continent, including Werksmans Attorneys and Norton Rose Fulbright. “My achievements, however long and laborious, made me a better man. Ultimately fate will define my future, but I wouldn’t mind securing a seat in the Union Buildings.” Ismail said with a humble smile. “I sit here as an avid admirer of Churchill and many others, and would like to be remembered as someone who contributed positively for the advancement of humanity. That’s what I’m working towards, and I do believe that there will be a meteoric rise in my future, and I will work toward the betterment of all South African life.” < Previous Article Next Article >

Frustration at the Ermelo licensing office 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 22 September 2020 For now, residents wishing to renew their driver’s licenses need to take a day off work and be sure to be the early bird in line. Residents who have to renew their license discs may stand in line, or use a queuing service such as J&P Queuing Service, which handles renewals of license discs on your behalf, provided you supply the appropriate documentation. Since the relaxation of the national lockdown, life as we know it is slowly returning to normal. However, since the re-opening of Ermelo’s licensing office, the institution has been inundated with license renewals and learner’s license applications. Reports have been received of residents queuing from 19:00 the previous evening, just to be one of the lucky few being assisted the next morning. According to the information at hand, a mere 50 residents are assisted per day, with COVID-19 regulations being put to blame. Desperate residents sleep in their vehicles at night to secure their spaces, and have even resorted to having a braai to alleviate the tension of standing in line for hours on end. Licensing office staff also allegedly close their booths early (before end of business) and also close their booths whilst on extended lunch and tea breaks. It is also alleged that the staff often never return to their booths, leaving residents in frustration and infuriated. Residents are now left high and dry, with a massive backlog of applications that needs to be processed, which could take weeks, if not months. The limited number of applicants being assisted per day also shows no positive effect, as this does little to reduce the backlog. Due to tighter regulations, residents are also now forced to stand in queue in Ermelo, as Breyten and Hendrina no longer accepts renewals and applications from Ermelo residents, and Morgenzon’s license office is bogged down with system issues and protest action. Speaking to Mr. Zwane, Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s spokesman, he stated that the municipality is aware of the issue, and is working on implementing a solution. “It is true that the licensing office assists a limited number of residents on a daily basis, due to the current lockdown. However, we are waiting for the new regulation after the President has announced that we are moving to level 1 of the lockdown. Management had also to consider the health and safety of both employees and residents, as the office has to be sanitized from time to time. It is also true that there is a huge backlog, due to ongoing lockdown, hence we are appealing to the community to bear with us in this trying times. It should be noted that learners licenses are only done Mondays, and not on Wednesdays as reported, and that the office have decreased the number applications to avoid further infections of the virus. As part of ameliorating the situation, government has appointed the South African Post Office to rendered services like MVL (motor vehicle licensing) renewal. Ermelo post office is one of the branches that will render such services in not too distance future. This will reduce the number of people visiting the license office by 20%.” For now, residents wishing to renew their driver’s licenses need to take a day off work and be sure to be the early bird in line. Residents who have to renew their license discs may stand in line, or use a queuing service such as J&P Queuing Service, which handles renewals of license discs on your behalf, provided you supply the appropriate documentation. For more information regarding their services, you may contact Janecka on 073 120 8312, or Pieter on 071 854 7915.Other than that, residents have little choice but to grin and bear the delay in service provision. < Previous Article Next Article >
