  • Kindling for zealous arsonists

Kindling for zealous arsonists 1/5 Share GK CRONJE 15 March 2022 One would assume that the stream of vacancies advertised by MLM for horticulturists, groundskeepers and other positions relating to parks and grounds maintenance, Ermelo would be a beacon of neatness. This is, however, not the case. The neglected state of Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s council grounds have long been a topic of discussion, with residents learning to deal with the repercussions as best they can. A prime example is the sordid state of the open fields and crossings within the municipal jurisdiction. With the dry season approaching, it is but a matter of time before the annual cases of arson rears its fiery head. Despite several enquiries directed to MLM as to why the grounds are left to their own devices, no answer has been provided. One would assume that the stream of vacancies advertised by MLM for horticulturists, groundskeepers and other positions relating to parks and grounds maintenance, Ermelo would be a beacon of neatness. This is, however, not the case. Motorists and pedestrians have to crane their necks at intersections within the wards to see past the grass taller than a vehicle’s roof, stray cattle leap from the shrubbery into oncoming traffic, and opportunistic criminals have convenient camouflage from the eyes of law enforcement and neighborhood watch. Once these fields are set alight, the thick bellows of smoke is a whole other kettle of fish, with road users and pedestrians being in equal danger due to the poor visibility that comes with the smoldering grass. Moreover, embers being carried during these field fires pose a danger to residences within the wards, which could easily catch fire during dry season. While MLM departments simply mow the field corners of selected intersections to make it easier to sport oncoming traffic, this is but wool over the eyes of ongoing service delivery failure issues. Unfortunately for wards already facing electrical infrastructure collapse, a large amount of electrical kiosks are shrouded in the tall grass. When this kindling lures a arsonists with an itchy finger, scores of residents are left in the dark as the kiosks are damaged beyond repair. In turn, this causes extensive expenditures on MLM’s books... And so the cycle of financial infeasibility continues. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Be wary of White Pages contractual traps

Be wary of White Pages contractual traps Be wary of White Pages contractual traps 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 2 March 2021 You are unwittingly duped into signing a twelve month contract to the value of R10 740.00. Desperate times call for desperate measures, as more and more business opt to move their operations online. A large part of a successful business online, is the feedback received from clients who search for your services. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) statistics play a large part in how easily your business can be found on Google, and various paid services can help increase your visibility rating. However, a company called White Pages, claim to provide interested parties with free SEO listings on Google. While this might seem like a perfect investment for your company, it is in actuality, a shameless moneymaking racket. When you are cold-mailed by White Pages representatives, or happen to stumble across their “free” service, take a look at the fine print on the documentation sent to you. While it may seem at a glance that this is a service rendered by Telkom, listing your contact details in a directory similar to the Yellow Pages, White Pages holds no affiliation to Telkom whatsoever. While a large, eye-catching sentence draws your attention, claiming to be a “free service”, the fine print is the flopped pudding. The fine print, which is almost always ignored, or simply glanced over when filling in a submission form, states that White Pages Directory Pty Ltd is an independent online advertising company, who is not affiliated to Telkom or Trudon. Furthermore, you are unwittingly duped into signing a twelve month contract to the value of R10 740.00. To make matters even worse, this contract will renew annually unless cancelled in writing, and White Pages Directory Pty Ltd needs to send confirmation acknowledging the request to cancel the service. Advertising is to be carried out for the above mentioned company as per the details above. It should also be noted that this contract is subjected to cancellation within five days of signing. Delayed payments will incur penalty fees after 30 days, and will be handed over for collection including costs on an attorney and client scale. Unsuspecting clients are also duped into signing a contract which binds them to 50% of the total amount being payable upon cancellation. Ironically, the “debt collection” e-mails often come from a Gmail account, which brings into question the validity of the White Pages, as well as the dubious means in which they trap unsuspecting individuals. There have been numerous complaints laid against the White Pages at the ombudsman, as well as the South African credit bureau. Complaints have also been lodged against the White Pages regarding harassment from their “debt collection department”, and affiliated legal threats. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Msukaligwa CHC project fizzles out | tribune-newspaper

Msukaligwa CHC project fizzles out 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 19 July 2022 Nearly five years later, and the construction site now has transformed into another white elephant. During the 2018 IDP meeting at the Ella de Bruin Hall, a state of the art 24-hour community health centre (CHC) was in the construction phase at Ward 16, Extension 32. Upon enquiry, little information had been provided by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) and other involved authorities regarding the services that would be offered by this project. The project would have benefitted approximately many households, who have to travel extensively to reach medical facilities. Rajen Naidoo from the Department of Health, Corporate Services stated that phase one, which involved the construction of concrete palisade fencing, which had been completed. According to Naidoo, phase two would involve the construction of a new Community Health Centre and accommodation units, which would have cost a total of R35 million. According to information available at that time, the project would have been constructed by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT), on behalf of the Mpumalanga Provincial Department of Health. Alas, the fiery enthusiasm shown by involved entities has fizzled in fantastic fashion. Nearly five years later, and the construction site now has transformed into another white elephant. Enquiries to the DPWRT have yielded no results, instead the Tribune was referred to the Department of Human Settlements (DOHS) for enquiries. However, the DOHS has responded, stating that in line with the Department’s broadened mandate, the construction of clinics do not form part of its competence. The Department further confirmed that there are currently no running human settlements projects in the area, except efforts to resolve sewer spillages. The Tribune directed an enquiry to MLM regarding the construction, which is supposed to see a completion date of March 2024, a span of 21 months. The municipality, in turn, could not provide any information regarding the project. According to the tender and leads portal B2B, the Msukaligwa Community Health Centre (CHC) is marked as awarded, but for an amount of R98 million. Furthermore, the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) states that the procurement of a contractor for the CHC project entails an amount of R48 745 314. The tender, RFP042/2021, was last updated in February 2022. Another tender by DBSA, RFP244/2019, was for a social facilitator service provider. The bid for this tender closed in January 2020, and the outcome of the tender is unknown. With several awarded tenders amounting to millions of Rands, the site now lays dormant, with no government department seemingly knowing what the state of affairs are, nor who is responsible for the project. No department, nor MLM, could provide clarity if the project is currently ongoing, or if it has been scrapped or delayed. < Previous Article Next Article >
