  • TLU calls for attention on farm murders | tribune-newspaper

TLU calls for attention on farm murders 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 29 September 2020 “The minister lets farmers in the country down. Our borders are not protected, stock theft is ever-increasing, and farm attacks get more violent than ever. Our feedback indicates an alarming element of racial hatred during such attacks. The minister says he sees every murder on a South African as serious, but it is time for him to realize that race plays a role when it comes to farm attacks.” Mr. Geldenhuys stated. TLU SA calls on the minister of police, Mr. Bheki Cele, to clarify if farm attacks and murders receive the attention it so urgently requires. Even if, according to him, it does not enjoy the status of a National Priority Crime anymore. The minister recently said in parliament, in answer to a question from the DA, that these crimes are not classified as priority crimes. He said farm attacks fall under other severe crimes like murder, attempted murder, sexual attacks, assault and robbery. According to him, they handle these crimes under the SAPS’s National Rural Safety Strategy, implemented from 1 March 2020, and which will be in place for the next five years. “It seems like the minister is more concerned about semantics than human lives,” says Mr. Henry Geldenhuys, the president of TLU SA. “Research shows that these types of attacks and murders on farms contain other elements than the ‘normal’ cases of murder and robbery. The protection of our members, the farmers who produce the food South Africans eat every day, is the most important issue for TLU SA. The minister should know that farmers stand together and that they can paralyze the country when food production is affected.” The recent farm attacks across the country saw very high levels of violence and racial tension. The EFF’s continued rants about land issues and the minister calling commercial farmers disrespectful and allowing communities to yell and insult them only serve to increase the tension even more. “The minister lets farmers in the country down. Geldenhuys concluded. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • COSATU throws weight behind NUMSA strike | tribune-newspaper

COSATU throws weight behind NUMSA strike 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 7 October 2021 Metalworkers union NUMSA had commenced its national strike on Tuesday, which will continue indefinitely until demands are met. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) stated that it will take part in the strike today to putpressure on the government and private sector to pay more attention to the working class. The strike has been slated as a "one day participation" by COSATU. “The federation is issuing a call to all workers and South Africans to join the strike. They can either join the planned activities across the country, or withdraw their labour by staying at home on the day,” said COSATU spokesperson, Sizwe Pamla. He said the union was demanding urgent action from policy makers in the government, as well as the private sector, to ensure that workers receive their dues. “Both the public and the private sector have been blatantly undermining collective bargaining. We want the reversal of budget cuts that have led to an unacceptable wage freeze in the public service, the disintegration of the CCMA, and retrenchments in state-owned companies,” Pamla said. Metalworkers union NUMSA had commenced its national strike on Tuesday, which will continue indefinitely until demands are met. The union demands an 8% wage increase for workers, and have accused employers of using the pandemic as an excuse to sidestep lawfully stipulated annual salary increases. An estimated 430 000 workers across 9 000 steel and engineering companies countrywide will down tools in solidarity. NUMSA spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, stated that all their members are fed up with the fact that the employers refuse to give them a meaningful increase. Therefore they are demanding an 8% wage increase across the board. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Be wary of White Pages contractual traps

Desperate times call for desperate measures, as more and more business opt to move their operations online. A large part of a successful business online, is the feedback received from clients who search for your services. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) statistics play a large part in how easily your business can be found on Google, and various paid services can help increase your visibility rating. However, a company called White Pages, claim to provide interested parties with free SEO listings on Google. While this might seem like a perfect investment for your company, it is in actuality, a shameless moneymaking racket. When you are cold-mailed by White Pages representatives, or happen to stumble across their “free” service, take a look at the fine print on the documentation sent to you. While it may seem at a glance that this is a service rendered by Telkom, listing your contact details in a directory similar to the Yellow Pages, White Pages holds no affiliation to Telkom whatsoever. While a large, eye-catching sentence draws your attention, claiming to be a “free service”, the fine print is the flopped pudding. The fine print, which is almost always ignored, or simply glanced over when filling in a submission form, states that White Pages Directory Pty Ltd is an independent online advertising company, who is not affiliated to Telkom or Trudon. Furthermore, you are unwittingly duped into signing a twelve month contract to the value of R10 740.00. To make matters even worse, this contract will renew annually unless cancelled in writing, and White Pages Directory Pty Ltd needs to send confirmation acknowledging the request to cancel the service. Advertising is to be carried out for the above mentioned company as per the details above. It should also be noted that this contract is subjected to cancellation within five days of signing. Delayed payments will incur penalty fees after 30 days, and will be handed over for collection including costs on an attorney and client scale. Unsuspecting clients are also duped into signing a contract which binds them to 50% of the total amount being payable upon cancellation. Ironically, the “debt collection” e-mails often come from a Gmail account, which brings into question the validity of the White Pages, as well as the dubious means in which they trap unsuspecting individuals. There have been numerous complaints laid against the White Pages at the ombudsman, as well as the South African credit bureau. Complaints have also been lodged against the White Pages regarding harassment from their “debt collection department”, and affiliated legal threats. • Alleged cable thief sustains severe flash injuries

Four men, of which one sustained severe electrical burns, have been admitted to Ermelo Provincial Hospital over the weekend for treatment. According to the information at hand, the men attempted to loot an exposed substation in Chris de Villiers Street. The substation in question has been a topic of debate, as it is one of the myriad of substations that are without covers or lids, with the exposed electrical circuitry begging to be tampered with, or stolen. The injured suspect sustained extensive electrical burns on his arms, torso and lower areas, aggravated by his clothing set alight by the electrical flash. According to information at hand at time of publication, the man survived the sustained injuries. The issue of substations being subjected to lack of maintenance by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) for extended periods of time is long standing, and is yet to be fully addressed by MLM. This particular substation has been targeted by thieves on various occasions, with businesses in the surrounding area suffering the damages caused by outages. With the exposed substations ripe for the picking, ponderous cable thieves have ample time to prepare, and strike during the rolling municipal load shedding, which takes place according to a published schedule. This makes life easier for prowling criminal elements, looking for an easy score. MLM is plagued by continuous cable theft in its various wards, with cables being spliced under a shroud of darkness due to non-working street lights, and even in the light of day, should criminals be brazen enough. Events such as this cause extended outages in wards, with residents suffering the aftermath of criminality. Cable theft is also a major expenditure within MLM’s budget, with residents often sitting in the dark for hours as technical teams scramble to acquire the necessary material for cable repairs. In previous statements, MLM has confirmed that several dockets pertaining to cable theft are active at the SAPS, but investigations are time consuming, and does little to buffer the crippling expenditure suffered by the municipality. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa NERSA requires mini-substations to be free of rust, and be locked as to be of no safety risk to the public. It is also expected by NERSA that municipalities keep substations and mini-substations painted, numbered and marked correctly, and that hazard signs be clearly displayed. This is not the case in Ermelo. NERSA mandates that, upon request, records must be provided of all emergency maintenance, regular maintenance and preventative maintenance that have been performed. Formal inspections of the network must also be presented upon request, although drive-through inspections may be accepted. In October 2019, MLM responded to the enquiries regarding the dilapidated substations, and stated that MLM has an approximate 880 kiosks and mini-substations. According to MLM, at the time of response, MLM had repaired 153 kiosks and mini substations over the course of 12 months, at an approximate cost of R500 000.00. According to the statement, MLM had also replaced an approximate 10 kiosks that burnt since January 2019. Some of the kiosks and mini substations doors were / are removed/ stolen by the community members. MLM also stated that it has lost R4 million from November 2018 to October 2019, due to cable theft. According to the municipality, the expenditures derails the maintenance process, hence the shoddy state of the substations and kiosks within its area of governance. Since the last response in October 2019, MLM has kept mum as to the daily degradation and lack of maintenance of substations and kiosks, despite enquiries on several occasions. MLM issued a statement, which read as follows: “The municipality, through the electrical section, received an information from the police that three men were electrocuted near Chris De Villiers Street, and they were already in Ermelo Provincial Hospital. It alleged that the five men were attempting to steal cables in the area, where two of them escaped unharmed. Cable theft and illegal connections costs the municipality (rate payers) millions of Rands, and may also lead to death to those who steal or connect illegal. Innocent or unsuspecting people may be in danger of the unprotected electrical wires. Cable theft is one of the causes of delay in restoring power after power outages. The municipality appeals to the community to immediately report any suspicious persons next to electricity apparatus to the municipality or police.” Information obtained from the SAPS Communication Department regarding the incident stated that MLM did not open a case against the alleged cable thieves. Residents are urged to report suspicious activity at substations and kiosks to the SAPS on 017 819 7803, to ACSU on 017 811 1274, or inform the neighborhood watch in their sector or ward Alleged cable thief sustains severe flash injuries Alleged cable thief sustains severe flash injuries One of the victims, who sustained serious flash injuries. Cassim Park getting the short end of the stick 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 2 March 2021 Residents also allege that they face constant electricity issues on a daily basis, often being left for hours without electricity, with a very slow response rate from municipal departments. Amidst the service delivery issues experienced by Ermelo and its surroundings, Cassim Park is getting the short end of the stick regarding maintenance from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). What was once the pride and joy of residents in this area, Cassim Park has since regressed to a hollow shadow of its former glory. Streets are riddled with potholes, a myriad of worksites are left incomplete, several streetlights are either damaged and leaning dangerously towards the roadway, or completely out of order, and uncollected refuse litter the sidewalks. Grass on municipal grounds are long and unkempt, and council buildings, covered in graffiti and obscene spray painted images, rot away in glorious non-maintenance. Residents also allege that they face constant electricity issues on a daily basis, often being left for hours without electricity, with a very slow response rate from municipal departments. Speaking to residents in the area, they claim to have reported these issues they face on a daily basis to MLM on several occasions, with no joy. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • DWS besoek Rietspruit Crushers | tribune-newspaper

< Previous Article Next Article >

Leon laat ‘n groot leemte in baie harte. “Mag jy nou vrede vind by Jesus se voete. Rus sag, Pyp.” < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Three men nabbed on kidnapping, murder and assault charges

Three men, aged between 30 and 32, appeared before the Carolina Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping, assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as murder. The trio was arrested on 4 September 2020. Their arrest follows an investigation by the SAPS, which revealed details of an incident that took place on Friday, 14 August 2020. It is alleged that the three men were driving in a vehicle, where they stopped upon noticing two males, aged 22 and 35. Allegations state that the two were then forced by these suspects into their vehicle, and were taken to a storeroom, where they were severely assaulted with an iron pipe as a form of punishment for allegedly insulting their colleague.  The matter was reported to the police, and the victims were taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries. One of the victims made a statement to the police, and a case was opened. The victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 1 September 2020. The second victim survived the attack. Preliminary investigations has since revealed that, amongst the men fingered in the whole saga, one is employed as manager at a local chain store. The other two suspects were found to be an assistant and a security guard. The case has been postponed to 16 September for further investigation, and formal bail hearing. The suspects have been remanded in custody. < Previous Article Next Article >
