MEC’s visit Cebisa following fatal stabbing 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 23 August 2022 Gangs are often connected to organized crime, violence and drugs. Following the gang-related fatal stabbing of a student at Cebisa Secondary School in Wesselton on Tuesday, 16 August 2022, the eyes of the country are on the government to take action. Mpumalanga education MEC, Bonakele Majuba, condemned the incident, and also conveyed his condolences to the family. “Regrettably, the stabbed learner succumbed to his injuries at Ermelo Provincial Hospital. It is alleged that the learners belonged to different troublesome gangs in the township,” the department said in a statement. The suspect is a fellow student, and has since been arrested on a farm between Ermelo and Breyten. MEC Majuba visited the school on this morning, together with Mpumalanga Community Safety and Security MEC, Vusi Shongwe, and other officials, who rendered psychosocial assistance to all who are affected by the incident. The two MECs also visited Laerskool Ermelo, where a meeting took place between the principals and student governing bodies of all schools in the area to discuss the way forward. During the visit, it was also announced that an imbizo will be hosted at the Wesselton Stadium on 28 August 2022. The imbizo will commence at 11:00. The imbizo will be led by MEC Shongwe, where gang violence and school safety will be discussed. Youth Gang Violence (YGV) is on the rise in South Africa, and this situation has led to increased fears about safety and security in and around schools. The increasing number of high school learners getting involved in gang activities raises a major concern regarding the impact of their involvement on their educational attainment, and lives in general. Young boys start associating with gangs very early, when they are still at primary school level, between the ages of 5 to 12-years-old. Other learners join youth gangs when in high school and beyond, between the ages of 14 and 21-years-old. The crimes and violence committed by the latter age group are of greater significance, and of a more serious nature. Gang involvement leads to many negative outcomes, such as incarceration, drug and alcohol use, injury and death. Gangs may also serve as a protective influence, and offer many benefits that are unmet in their homes, schools and neighborhoods to those who join them. Risk factors include poor attachment to school, attention and learning problems at school, and dropping out of school, whilst gangsterism that emanate from the family include poor attachment to the parents, delinquent siblings, and violent parents and gangster family members. Dr. Rian Swart lê sy stetoskoop neer 1/1 Share SH HATTINGH 23 February 2021 Sy aftreeplanne is om meer betrokke te raak by die boerdery, asook om in Jeffreysbaai te gaan kuier, waar Riekie ‘n huis het en waar haar kinders woon. Dr. Swart, ‘n welbekende in Ermelo, nie net onder die medici nie, maar ook onder die boere en gemeenskap, het besluit op die ouderdom van 78 jaar sy stetoskoop neer te lê. Hy is op 13 Julie 1942 in Amersfoort gebore. Hy was in Piet Retief in die laerskool, en het sy Hoêrskool loopbaan voltooi by Hoêrskool Ermelo. Dr. Swart het sy MBChB graad verwerf by die Universiteit van Pretoria , waarna hy vir ses jaar in Kroonstad gepraktiseer het. In 1973 verloor dr. Swart sy vader, en is genoodsaak om terug te keer Ermelo toe. Hy begin saam met vier ou manne werk, drs. Van Niekerk, Van Rensburg, De Bruin en Visagie. Met tyd wat aan gestap het, het van die dokters afgetree, en hy moes vennote kry om saam met hom te praktiseer. Dr. Swart en Vennote, wat bestaan uit Drs. Van Der Poel, Botha en Olivier, vier hul 47ste bestaansjaar die jaar. Hy het die voorreg gehad om meer as vierduisend babas in die wêreld in te kan bring. Tydens ‘n onderhoud met Dr. Swart, het hy aan die Tribune gesê daar was meer hoogtepunte in sy beroep gewees as wat daar laagtepunte was. Dit was altyd vir hom ‘n hoogtepunt as hy sy pasiënte kon gesond maak, of wanneer daar geopereer moes word, en die operasie ‘n sukses was. “Wanneer ek weet ek het ‘n operasie om te doen, dan het ek die vorige aand, asook die oggend gebid, en vir die Liewe Vader gevra om my te help tydens die operasie dat alles goed sal afloop. Ek het altyd op die Here vertrou, dit wat ek weet is baie maar die Here weet baie meer.” sê Dr. Swart. Speaking to Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), Ms. Dube investigated the allegations, and confirmed that the chain message is a hoax. Ms. Dube has spoken to the Head of Scientific Services, who, who assists with water testing. According to GSDM, the water tests conducted this month, no alarming or poisonous chemicals have been noted. She also stated that Msukaligwa Local Municipality is not aware of any reports indicating that the water has been contaminated, as no reports from the Department of Health have been received in relation to the allegations. A total of 15 teams braved the blazing sun during a Four Ball Alliance, with a Scramble Drive competition. Sweat, fun, camaraderie and a few cold beverages to cool off saw an alliance score of 123, giving Brakecore 2 the win for the day. Prince of Tides placed second on the day, with a score of 117, with the Moth Club narrowly missing the second podium, placing third with a total score of 116. TLU SA to raise awareness of farm attacks 1/0 Share GK CRONJE 4 August 2020 “This year we already faced 35 murders in 180 farm attacks. These are not statistics. They are people. South Africans often do not realize the scale of the impact of attacks on agriculture as a whole and ultimately, on food production.” Therefore, on 14 August 2020, TLU SA will virtually walk around South Africa in 24 hours in protest against the 5 530 farm attacks since 1990. TLU SA is anxious about the increase in farm attacks, which this weekend lead to five murders. It earnestly urges farmers, their families and workers to be alert at all times. “The nine attacks of this weekend confirmed our observation that the marked decrease in violent crimes on farms during the first week of the lockdown, was shortlived. The first six months of 2020 mirror the same period in 2019,” says Mr. Henry Geldenhuys, the chairman of TLU SA’s Safety Committee, and deputy president of TLU SA. Apart from the increase in crime, the lockdown also leads to further complications when police stations have to close temporarily after exposure to COVID-19. The public often does not have any alternative numbers for SAPS members at these stations, and they are left to their own devices during attacks. “It’s been some time since TLU SA realized they could not depend on the government to safeguard them,” says Mr. Geldenhuys. “People who live on farms increasingly have to make use of their own abilities and capacity to ensure their safety. The solution lies in personal alertness and readiness.” From the feedback after failed attacks, it is clear that victims who were highly alert and ready, with a weapon on hand, and could effectively prevent an attack. The reaction of a well-organized Farm Watch, made up of members who knows the environment and residents, is invaluable when the reaction time and effective action of the police are limited. Safety starts with the individual farmer, then the family and workers and then branches out to neighbours, Farm Watch and the police. It is crucial to be prepared by keeping a weapon for self-defense within reach, to have your contingency plan in place, and ensuring the ability to communicate from the farm, is established. On Wednesday, 3 August 2022, the staff and residents of the SAVF Home in Fourie Street once again watched with shock and awe as yet another heavy vehicle plowed through the palisade fencing near the intersection. According to available information, the vehicle’s brakes failed, whereafter the driver was unable to bring the vehicle to a stop. The load bed was filled with sand, which exacerbated the incident. The vehicle flattened a section of the palisade fencing, and luckily came to a halt as it collided with one of the oak trees in the parking area. Sections of the tree splintered off and crashed to the ground in the parking area. Miraculously, the driver escaped with minor injuries, despite the heavy vehicle’s cab being extensively crushed. No other injuries have been reported during the incident. Provincial EMS, Van Wettens Towing Services, Msukaligwa Traffic, Msukaligwa Fire & Rescue and other roleplayers were on scene in a matter of minutes to assess the scene, which took several hours to clean up. Yesterday, 7 October, Msukaligwa Local Municipality ruffled more than a few feathers with the announcement of a four-day electrical outage, during which time maintenance of the 11/88KV substation in Ermelo, Extension 18. The public notice has been rescinded. Speaking to the municipal spokesman, Mandla Zwane, he confirmed that the notice has been rescinded, and that the scheduled maintenance will no longer be taking place on the dates stated. The spokesman has, however, confirmed that the maintenance has not been canceled, but will be rescheduled to a different datestamp. The spokesman has also confirmed that the outage will indeed be for four days due to the extensive nature of the maintenance. All avenues will be explored in an attempt to shorten the length of the outage. The withdrawal of the notice is due to the contracted company that will be responsible for the maintenance erring in the estimation of the time that the maintenance will take to complete. The municipality has stated that it would convey the adjusted dates to the public as soon as it is confirmed. The municipality would also like to take the opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience caused, and stated that it is aware of the impact that the outage will have on the community, including students who write exams and attend classes via online platforms. The recent heavy downpours experienced in Ermelo has highlighted various issues within the infrastructure of Ermelo and its wards. During bouts of heavy rainfall, businesses and residences are repeatedly drenched as accumulated water flood houses and ill-prepared businesses, due to the fact that the majority of storm drains are blocked and of no use. Swelling water torrents sweep through the streets and pool in ditches and dips in the CBD and residential wards. The reality of the major pollution issue within Ermelo becomes apparent as the water subsided, and all manner of refuse, fast food containers and liquor bottles are left in the wake of the torrents. Several reports of water pipes have been reported, with a vast amount of water being wasted as the thinly-spread municipal teams scramble to attend all issues reported by residents. Complaints are mounting regarding the call centre, supposedly revamped and operating at optimal capacity, where phones are left unanswered. Complaints also included rude responses from operators, or the lines remaining engaged for hours on end. Most frustratingly, many residents have been left without electricity for days on end. Heavy rainfall, rainwater pooling around substations and electrical kiosks, as well as the myriad of exposed innards from coverless electrical kiosks added to the rolling power outages. Residents in John Vorster Park struggled with fluctuating electricity supply, Netherland Park’s wards have been shrouded in darkness, and De Bruin Park’s residents suffered extensively. Most notably, residents in Jansen Street had been left without electricity for over 3 days, as from Friday morning, with some residences still being without electricity supply on Monday morning. Oosthuisen Street and Havenga Road also bore a big brunt of the outages, as accumulated rainwater caused havoc on the poorly patched MV cables. Fuming complaints on social media lamented the fact that the constant fluctuation of electricity had damaged electrical components, including DB boards, televisions, fridges and deep freezes. Many complaints also included the fact that frozen foods have thawed and spoiled due to the constant outages, with Msukaligwa Municipality washing their hands of the damages suffered due to the outages. Residents in Cassim Park are left with their hands in their hair, as scores of wards were left without electricity for hours, and even days, as technical teams struggle to keep up with reports and complaints. What was initially touted to be modern, safe and secure living, has turned to a sewage-soaked headache, with both new home owners, and residents in Autumn Ridge, Camden-and President Fouchè Avenues, Mauritz Read, Harold Edges and Mel Mentz Streets, all being at the end of their patience. The once-flagship security village project, Autumn Ridge, is rife with residents hot under the collar due to the constant stench of raw sewage. “They just keep building and building, but they don’t finish what they start. If a drain is blocked, we have to wait days, sometimes weeks, and even months for the municipality to assist us, if they ever do. In many cases, we have to make a plan ourselves, because the municipality never arrives. We have to think of our health and the health of our children,” one complex resident lamented. It is evident that the aged and dilapidated sewerage network in this area quite simply can not handle the influx of sewage and wastewater produced by the ever-growing number of houses. What one can only assume to be poor town planning from the municipality has now created a ever-expanding issue of environmental pollution. Alas, the municipality simply ignores these specific overflows, which ave been ongoing since 2015, and reported by numerous residents in this area in August 2016. At the time, the Tribune visited the site, which already showed evidence of overload, and since then, the residences have multiplied exponentially, without infrastructure provision being made by the municipality. Upon visiting the site in 2022, the environmental impact and pollution from these sewage overflows are simply flabbergasting. There are at least four overflow sites that could be noted in the vicinity of Camden Avenue, with more being visible in the distance. The sheer amount of raw sewage is shocking to behold, a stench to choke on. The Vaal River, a source of water for approximately 19 million South Africans, has been slated as polluted “beyond acceptable levels”, impacting on natural ecosystems and endangering the people's health. However, the issue of MLM’s blatant disregard of environmental impact is no news. In 2014, Municipal Manager at the time, Mr M.W. Zungu, the Head of the Water Department, Mr B. van der Merwe, and the Director of Technical Services, Mr S. Magudulela, received a summons, whilst performing in their capacity as managers of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, in connection to blocked and overflowing sewage sites. Almost all of these sites, including the spillages near the Pet Dam, to this very day, still overflows into the Pet Dam and surrounding water bodies. In 2014, it was estimated that the spillages deposits a quantity of >1 000 000 E. Coli per 100ml of water. Currently, the situation has greatly increased in severity. The fact that, in terms of the National Water Act, 36 of 1998, as read with the National Environmental Act, 107 of 1998, the pollution of a water resource is a criminal offence, the municipality pays no heed. With brazen nonchalance, MLM had recently dug trenches to redirect the constant sewage spillage in President Fouché towards the middle of the field, in an attempt to make the overflow less noticeable. To date, the municipality has failed to provide reasoning behind this, despite various enquiries by the Tribune. More laughable is the fact that the municipal manager at the time, is no longer serving the municipality. Unfortunately, the fact that scores of “acting” municipal officials trot through the municipal service delivery system doorways, leaves nobody in charge to take responsibility for the disasters left behind. However, this is of little comfort to residents in this area, as well as the local school, who have to suffer in the unsanitary environment and gagging stench, day in, and day out. This overflow, coupled with a myriad of other spillages, connect directly to the Klein Drinkwater stream. This stream flows through several farms an small holdings, to eventually contaminate the Vaal River with thousands of kiloliters of raw sewage each month. The SANBS would like to assure all potential donors that all COVID-19 regulations are enforced at every donation site. The safety of the donors and staff is paramount to the SANBS. Another myth that is circulating on social media involves the tall tale that you cannot donate blood if you have not been vaccinated. This is categorically incorrect, and untrue. The SANBS confirmed that it does not defer vaccinated people from donating, nor does it record whether a donor has been vaccinated or not. “We urge all healthy donors to come forward and continue to donate much needed, life-saving blood. Op Vrydagaand, 18 Junie 2021, het privaat inspekteur, Mike Bolhuis, Ermelo se inwoners toegespreek rakende die swak dienslewering en finansiële wanbestuur van Msukaligwa Plaaslike Munisipaliteit (MLM). Inwoners wat die toespraak bygewoon het, was kans gegun om hul frustrasie en klagtes aan te meld, wat vanaf water en riool, elektrisiteit, geskatte meterlesings, die verkeersdepartement en lisensie kantore, tot by beweerde korrupsie vanaf die munisipale amptenare. Mnr. Bolhuis het dit duidelik gemaak vanaf die staanspoor dat die penarie waarin Ermelo hul bevind nie met die waai van ‘n towerstaffie opgelos gaan word nie, maar dat dit ‘n hewige proses sal wees. Na aanleiding van Mnr. Bolhuis, moet alle klagtes en besware gedokumenteer word. As ‘n inwoner ‘n probleem ondvervind met enige aspek van MLM, word hul versoek of foto- of videomateriaal bymekaar te maak. Sodoende sal die verdediging van MLM gekniehalter word met onbetwisbare feite. Geskatte water en elektrisiteit rekeninge moet gedokumenteer word en alles bymekaar gehou word. Mnr. Bolhuis het met lof bevestig dat geskatte rekeninge totaal en al onwettig is. Die feit dat MLM nie ordentlike en akkurate meterlesings doen nie, is ‘n misdaad. Inwoners wat ingedoen word met elektrisiteit en water rekeninge van derduisende Rande is ‘n misdaad. Die feit dat inwoners geforseer word om die geskatte rekening bedrae te betaal onder die dreigement vanaf MLM dat dienste gestaak sal word en elektriese toevoer afgesny gaan word, is ‘n misdaad. Foto’s moet geneem word van swak dienslewering en faal van dienslewering vanaf munisipale afdelings, onder andere die lisensie kantoor. “Jou foon is die belangrikste, maar ook die gevaarlikste ding wat jy by jou dra. Foto’s, video’s en klankgrepe (voice recordings) is onweerlegbare bewyse van gebeure. Neem foto’s van swak dienslewering. As jy swak dienslewering ontvang, maak ‘n video daarvan. Al hierdie dinge maak die saak net sterker,” het Mnr. Bolhuis gesê. Hy het egter ook laat hoor dat Projek Ermelo slegs ‘n sukses sal wees as alle inwoners saamstaan, ongeag van ras, ideologie en gemeenskap status. Bolhuis het ook inwoners genoop om nie hulself te verlustig in skinderstories, en staat te maak op hoorsê en derdehandse informasie nie. Die belangrikste deel van die projek is dat ieder en elkeen hul deel moet bring. In hierdie tyd van maak of breek is daar nie plek vir groot honde wat baie blaf en geen byt het nie. Elkeen moet hul klagte indien, elkeen moet hul bewyse van klagtes instuur na die Projek Ermelo e-pos adres. Inwoners wat agteraf baie te sê het, maar as dit by die daad kom, geen bydrae lewer nie, moet hul deel begin bybring. Ongeag van wat se hoorsê in die gemeenskap rondflap, die tyd vir aksie is nou.
