Dr. Rian Swart lê sy stetoskoop neer 1/1 Share SH HATTINGH 23 February 2021 Sy aftreeplanne is om meer betrokke te raak by die boerdery, asook om in Jeffreysbaai te gaan kuier, waar Riekie ‘n huis het en waar haar kinders woon. Dr. Swart, ‘n welbekende in Ermelo, nie net onder die medici nie, maar ook onder die boere en gemeenskap, het besluit op die ouderdom van 78 jaar sy stetoskoop neer te lê. Hy is op 13 Julie 1942 in Amersfoort gebore. Hy was in Piet Retief in die laerskool, en het sy Hoêrskool loopbaan voltooi by Hoêrskool Ermelo. Dr. Swart het sy MBChB graad verwerf by die Universiteit van Pretoria , waarna hy vir ses jaar in Kroonstad gepraktiseer het. In 1973 verloor dr. Swart sy vader, en is genoodsaak om terug te keer Ermelo toe. Hy begin saam met vier ou manne werk, drs. Van Niekerk, Van Rensburg, De Bruin en Visagie. Met tyd wat aan gestap het, het van die dokters afgetree, en hy moes vennote kry om saam met hom te praktiseer. Dr. Swart en Vennote, wat bestaan uit Drs. Van Der Poel, Botha en Olivier, vier hul 47ste bestaansjaar die jaar. Hy het die voorreg gehad om meer as vierduisend babas in die wêreld in te kan bring. Tydens ‘n onderhoud met Dr. Swart, het hy aan die Tribune gesê daar was meer hoogtepunte in sy beroep gewees as wat daar laagtepunte was. Dit was altyd vir hom ‘n hoogtepunt as hy sy pasiënte kon gesond maak, of wanneer daar geopereer moes word, en die operasie ‘n sukses was. “Wanneer ek weet ek het ‘n operasie om te doen, dan het ek die vorige aand, asook die oggend gebid, en vir die Liewe Vader gevra om my te help tydens die operasie dat alles goed sal afloop. Ek het altyd op die Here vertrou, dit wat ek weet is baie maar die Here weet baie meer.” sê Dr. Swart. Hy verloor sy huweliksmaat, Miemie, vroeg in 2019, en het gedink hy sal die res van sy pad alleen stap. Die egpaar was vir 53 jaar getroud. Op 27 Junie 2020 trou hy egter weer met ‘n ou vriendin, Riekie, wat ook haar lewensmaat verloor het. Sy aftreeplanne is om meer betrokke te raak by die boerdery, asook om in Jeffreysbaai te gaan kuier, waar Riekie ‘n huis het en waar haar kinders woon. “Ek was baie lief vir my werk, en gaan defnitief terug verlang na die werk. Op Saterdag, 6 Maart, het Hoërskool Ermelo hulle jaarlikse gholfdag met groot sukses aangebied. Dit is elke jaar ‘n projek wat deur die Errieraad se ouers aangebied word, en die gemeenskap se betrokkenheid spreek boekdele oor die positiewe gesindheid teenoor EHS. Daar was ‘n groot verskeidenheid pryse vir die 160 spelers wat ingeskryf was vir die gholfdag. Vir die individuele wenners was daar spesifieke pryse: Naaste aan die pen, putjie 4: André Croeser, Naaste aan die pen, putjie 6: Derek Bouwer, Naaste aan die pen, putjie 14: DC Swart, Naaste aan die pen, putjie 16: Mamba Dumezane. Langste dryf, putjie 9: Chanté Boonstra, Langste dryf, putjie 18: Chanté Boonstra, Hoeveelheid gholfballe in houer, nommer 12: Bossie Bosman. Omdat die formaat van die gholfdag ‘n twee-bal-beter-bal was, was die pryse in stelle van twee elk, waaruit die wenners self kon kies. Daar is 24 plekke aangekondig, dus het 48 van die spelers pryse gekry. Die wenners van die dag is as volg: W. Dreyer en A. Croeser wen die dag met 49 punte. In die tweedeplek is F. du Plooy en P. van der Merwe met 47 punte. Op hulle hakke volg T. Leibbrandt en P. Leibbrandt ook met 47 punte. In die vierde plek is J. Nkondo en V. Simelane en E. Neveling en L. Velleman neem die vyfde plek in. “Hoërskool Ermelo bedank elke speler en borg wat bygedra het tot die sukses van 2021 se EHS-Gholfdag. Al die ondersteuning wat EHS onophoudelik ontvang is wat die Erries van krag tot krag laat groei. Baie geluk en dankie aan die Errieraad, en hul ouers met ‘n puik gereëlde funksie. MBCF sets hardball plan into motion 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 16 August 2022 Over R300 million is blown on salaries, with the municipality employing more than 50 “managers” amongst the staff. The Msukaligwa Business & Community Forum (MBCF) unveiled their plan of forcing service delivery from Msukaligwa Local Municipality during a meeting at the Ermelo Inn on Wednesday, 10 August 2022. A satisfactory turnout of residents and business owners marked the event, where the chairperson, Janice Conradie, set forth the plan of action. Conradie stated that the municipality is on the verge of complete collapse, unless drastic measures are implemented. Part of the plan to force delivery of services include, but are not limited to a mass dispute of faulty accounts across the board and a plan to have residents and businesses withhold payments to put pressure on the municipality to step up to the plate. Conradie also told the Tribune that Gert Sibande District Municipality will be involved, and the matter will be escalated to a provincial and national level. A high level meeting with Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is also on the schedule. However, the complacency of the residents and businesses in Ermelo needs to come to and end if the plan is to be successfully implemented. Every resident needs to take a stand against the municipality, which consistently fails to deliver their mandated service. Rampant corruption, politicking and constant infighting has a bleak and distressing effect on Ermelo and the Msukaligwa region. Mismanagement and a lack of strong, honest and consistent leadership has the municipality sinking at an alarming rate. According to the MBCF, the municipality is more than R200 million in arrears with their Eskom account, hence the frustrating load reduction. In addition to the monthly bill they have to service, they have to fork out an additional 15% interest on the arrears amount. Over R300 million is blown on salaries, with the municipality employing more than 50 “managers” amongst the staff. This alone takes a huge chunk of the flimsy operating budget. Conradie also says that the municipality has over R20 million allocated for the installation of new, modern water meters, but they fail to utilize the funds in a manner that is seen fit. The new meters would eliminate the need of manual water meter readings, and would also halt the illegal practice of estimating water usage figures. Shockingly, the municipality also owes the Rand Water Board close to R1 billion, despite the municipality going on record on several previous occasions, stating that the account is serviced sufficiently. The MBCF implores residents to apply for membership, as a large collective of residents are needed to get the plan off the ground. Conradie has told the Tribune that they are convening with higher authorities, as well as their advocate, to compile a clear, concise and comprehensive plan of action to be launched at the next meeting, which is to be announced soon. Op Maandag aand, 2 November 2020, het die Erries hulle jaarlikse Streepbaadjieseremonie in die EHS-Ouditorium aangebied. Tydens die funksie word die Graad 12-streepbaadjie aan volgende jaar se matrieks deur hul ouers oorhandig. Hiermee saam word verskeie formuliere voorgelees. Met die aantrek van die baadjie stem die leerders in om die verantwoordelikhede as leiers na te kom soos uiteen gesit in die formuliere. Die ouers wat die baadjie vir die leerders aantrek onderneem ook, saam met hul kind, om die reëls, verantwoordelikhede en verwagtinge van Hoërskool Ermelo te respekteer, en hul kinders te ondersteun in die leierskapsrol wat hy of sy inneem in hul Graad 12-jaar. Die streepbaadjie is simbolies vir die leierskap wat die Erries hoog op prys stel – dit is nie net die Errieraad wat as leiers gesien word nie, maar al die matrieks. Hulle word onderskei van die res van die leerders, omdat hulle die Erries moet lei. Die streepbaadjie het ‘n diep betekenis en ryke geskiedenis: in 1917 het mej. Adriani, EHS se eerste skoolhoof, die baadjie ontwerp en dit is ingestel as die eerste skoolbaadjie van Hoërskool Ermelo(toe nog genoem die Uitkomstskool). Slegs die erekleure-leerders het die effe-groen baadjie gedra. In 1996 het die streepbaadjie weggeval as gevolg van die hoë koste van die baadjie, omdat die materiaal nie meer beskikbaar was nie. In 2010 het wyle mnr. Bok Martins die streepbaadjie weer ingestel. Die materiaal word ingevoer, en EHS het patentreg op hierdie materiaal. Dit is net nog ‘n area waar die Erries uitstyg bo die res. Die wit van die baadjie is simbolies vir reinheid en hoop. Moed en hoop is die simboliek van die groen. Tydens die seremonie is die Skoolbybel en skoolvlag aan 2021 se presidente oorhandig. Die Bybel is oorhandig aan Anke de Kock as simbool van geloof. Dit het gepaard gegaan met die wens: “Glo in God en glo in die toekoms. Neem dit as ‘n lig vir jou pad, ook vir die Erries.” Aan Arend Fourie is die skoolvlag oorhandig. Die vlag simboliseer eenheid in wil, en eenheid in strewe vir Hoërskool Ermelo. Daarmee saam ook die wens: “Neem dit en bou ‘n beter toekoms vir ons skool en ons land.” Die streepbaadjie lê die Erries na aan die hart, en dit is elke jaar vir die Graad 11’s ‘n groot hoogtepunt om hul baadjies te ontvang. Op Vrydag, 26 Maart, het Laerskool Ermelo ‘n “Crazy Mask Day” dag by die skool aangebied, waar leerders vir hulle moes maskers maak. Daar was uiters pragtige maskers gemaak, en baie moeite is gedoen met die ontwerpe. Tydens die dag is daar ‘n wenner uit elke graad gekies wat die mees kreatiewe masker gemaak het. State of disaster extended yet again 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 14 January 2021 The ban on alcohol remains in place, as allowing the sale of liquor would result in a spike in trauma cases. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has now announced the extended the national state of disaster for another month. Existing level 3 lockdown restrictions were recently extended until further notice, following an address to the nation by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this week. In his address, Ramaphosa stated that the COVID-19 pandemic is at the worst stage it has ever been in South Africa, and he stressed the importance of compliance with lockdown restrictions. Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has now announced the extended the national state of disaster for another month. Dalmini-Zuma announced the change in a new government gazette, which stated that the national state of disaster will remain in place until 15 February 2021, and cited the “need to continue augmenting the existing legislation and contingency arrangements undertaken by organs of state to address the impact of the disaster” as the reason for the extension. While South Africa remains under lockdown restrictions the national state of disaster must remain in place, as the legislation enforcing restrictions on citizens is promulgated under the National State of Disaster Act. In September 2021, motorists and businesses let out a sigh of relief regarding the rehabilitated Wessel Road. This road was previously a complete nightmare for consumers, but after an elongated court battle between Burlec Electrical and Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), a court order forced the municipality to repair the route as well as to carry the legal costs incurred by Burlec Electrical. Although most are quite satisfied and grateful that the surface of the roadway is now smooth pothole-free, there is concern from the public and businesses in the area. Although most of the finishing touches to the project were completed, the municipal contractor dumped the rubble of the rebuilt surface in the nearby field, coupled with several other rubble items and building materials used by the contractors. When the project was apparently completed, the Tribune ePaper sent an enquiry regarding the issues to MLM, to clarify who would take responsibility to clear the rubble. To date, however, MLM has failed to provide feedback, and has simply turned a deaf ear. The debris left by the contractor also attracted the attention of residents of surrounding informal settlements, seizing the opportunity with both hands to dump a wide selection of household refuse, molten cables, garden waste and more into this area as well. According to the latest available by-laws, the term building waste refers to all waste produced during the construction, alteration, repair or demolition of any structure, and includes building rubble, earth, vegetation and rock displaced during such construction, alteration, repair or demolition. The contractor, employed by the municipality to rehabilitate the road surface, has since failed to rehabilitate the site in question, and has left a large amount of building waste in its wake. The main objects of the applicable by-laws are to ensure that waste is avoided, or where it cannot altogether be avoided, minimized, re-used, recycled, recovered and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner, to promote sustainable development and environmental justice through fair and reasonable measures for the management of waste within the Council's jurisdiction, and ensuring sound waste management practices within residential and industrial environments. The generator of waste, in this instance, the contractor, is compelled by the building waste by-law to ensure that no additions or alteration of any structure should be done without making provision for waste that will be generated from the site. The by-law also stipulates that the premises on which the building waste is generated, do not become unsightly and no nuisance is caused by accumulated building waste, and that any instruction from the Council regarding the management and storage of building waste, including any structures to be constructed is adhered to. Furthermore, the by-law states that for building waste that is generated, or the developer must ensure that the waste is collected and transported by an accredited service provider. At this time, all of the above point have been ignored and contravened. The Tribune ePaper directed an enquiry to Msukaligwa Local Municipality on 24 March 2022. Ander AfriForum-buurtwagte in die nabye omgewing sluit die Standerton-buurtwag, wat al verskeie suksesse behaal het, in. “Dié buurtwag vorm deel van ons takstruktuur, en het ten doel om die gemeenskap in samewerking met die polisie en ander plaaslike veiligheidsinstansies in tye van nood by te staan,” sê Bronwen Pretorius, AfriForum se distrikskoördineerder van die Hoëveld. “Ek is baie opgewonde oor die stigting van ons buurtwag, en nooi die gemeenskap uit om by ons in te skakel. ER24 spoedig op toneel na vrou hand verloor 1/2 Share SM HATTINGH 5 July 2022 Die helikopter het omstreeks 15:00 by Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie se rugbyveld geland. Op Saterdag, 2 Julie 2022, het ER24 hul gehaas na ‘n saagmeule in Chrissiesmeer. Met hul aankoms, het hul dadelik mediese behandeling toegepas op ‘n vrou wat per ongeluk haar hand afgesny het. ER24 het dadelik Rocket Air Ambulance geskakel om die pasiënt te kom haal in Ermelo, en oor te plaas vir mediese behandeling. Die helikopter het omstreeks 15:00 by Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie se rugbyveld geland, waar die pasiënt oorgeplaas was na Netcare Alberton hospitaal toe. Nog geen verdere inligting is beskikbaar oor die pasiënt nie. Corruption and bribery steals the limelight 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 21 April 2021 Several attempts to contact the DARDLA office communication department spokesperson yielded no result. Irate residents protested in front of the Gert Sibande District DARDLA office in Church Street on Wednesday morning, with regards to employment and alleged corruption and bribery. According to one of the protestors, the SAPS allegedly fail to take action against acts of corruption. One of the protestors also claimed that they were offered work on a farm, but in exchange, it is alleged that a bribery fee had to be presented. Several attempts to contact the DARDLA office communication department spokesperson yielded no result. Luckily, a heated exchange of words between the protestors and SAPS officers on scene did not escalate. Traffic flow in Church Street was temporarily impeded as the SAPS monitored the situation. Residents are again warned to take extra precautions and be careful with their money, as many fall into traps which scammers set for their unsuspecting victims, defrauding them of their hard earned cash. Since the festive season begun last year up to this far, the police in Mpumalanga received more than 15 cases where members of the public were lured via Internet and social media platforms to deposit sum of money into deals, which were later found to be unscrupulous and never materialized, resulting in them losing a considerable amount of money. Perpetrators often post appealing advertisements regarding sale of cars, household appliances, cell phones, pets, generators, containers for sanitizers and other valuable items on social media platforms. These suspects would then convince their targets who are in a dire need of the mentioned items that they can be obtained at an unbelievable price. Vulnerable victims would then engage in some form of communication with these faceless sellers, who would then insist on urgently receiving a cash deposit either via EFT or deposit at the bank before the needed items are delivered. After such a fraudulent transaction is made, the suspect would confirm having received the money, and at times even demand more cash, and then vanish into thin air without fulfilling the promise. In a recent incident in Bethal, a complainant was defrauded a total amount of R150 000, after being made to believe that a white Toyota bakkie posted and advertised on social media was authentic. The victim got hooked, and was told by the fraudster to make an urgent deposit of the cash in order to secure the said vehicle urgently. He was further convinced that the vehicle documents will be prepared for him immediately after the payment. He then excitedly made the deposit and unfortunately, that was the last time he had his hands on his money. The police were notified about the incident, and a case of fraud was opened. The SAPS had since learned with great concern that others across the province were scammed of thousands of Rands in the same fraudulent process. The public is therefore again urged to approach reputable businesses, shops or car dealerships that are operating within the ambit of the law whenever they want to make purchases. The community members are further advised to conduct a proper research, rather than naively relying on advertisements displayed on social media, as most of the information tends to be misleading. The public should also guard against the idea of quickly depositing or transferring cash to unknown people without proper verification. Anyone with information that can assist the SAPS in apprehending these perpetrators, should call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively, they can send information via MySAPS application, which can be downloaded on any smartphone.
