Though the act typically involves buildings, the term arson can also refer to the intentional burning of fields, dry grass and leaves, which is a common sight in Ermelo. During the course of last week, motorists traveling in the area in and around President Fouché Avenue had to pay extra attention, as thick smoke bellows from the adjacent field made visibility extremely poor. Further aggravating the situation is the fact that the road was obscured by smoke in the timeframe where traffic flow was ramping up as residents returned from work. Allegations have surfaced that a gardening service set a pile of dry leaves on fire, subsequently causing the fire to spread to the nearby field. The imprisonment term for a convicted crime relating to arson could be set up to seven years or more, and a fine of up to R250 000, and four years of probation. Little fighter celebrates birthday in hospital 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 14 September 2021 The prayer and update group created for Daniel on Facebook was abuzz with birthday- and well wishes for the little soldier, who has thus far persevered and kept a light spirit, despite his injuries. The news of Daniel Kerswell, now 2 years old, spread like wildfire through the community of Ermelo, and the nation as a whole. In a utter freak accident, Daniel was accidentally hit by his father’s SUV on Sunday, 5 September, after he presumably ran out to say goodbye to his father. Unbeknownst to Paul, Daniel’s father, the toddler was behind the SUV, and was subsequently knocked down. Daniel is currently being treated in Steve Biko for medical treatment for a broken collarbone and hip bone, and one of his lungs also collapsed. Initial brain scans indicated no cranial injury. The past week has, however, been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for the family, as well as those following the updates regarding Daniel’s wellbeing. While he had a setback during the week when they attempted to wean him off the ventilator, the little one bounced back resiliently and is in stable condition. Danelle, the toddler’s mother, told the Tribune ePaper that the medical personnel has provided a positive update on his condition, and that the drainage shunt and ventilator was again scheduled to be removed yesterday, Monday, 13 September. According to an update by Danelle, the little man woke up during visiting hours on Monday, and immediately started to cry when he saw her. At time of publication, the ventilator pipes were being removed. The accident occurred a mere week before the toddler’s second birthday, which was joyously celebrated by all this past Sunday, despite the rough week. Two suspects, aged 28 and 39, were arrested by members of Fidelity Security during the night of Thursday, 21 January 2021, at Kendal near Phola. The pair were arrested after Transnet control room detected a fuel pressure drop on the pipeline. Authorities responded to the identified spot and apprehended one suspect, who attempted to run away. He had fresh burn marks all over his body. A big fire was raging in the maize field nearby, and upon inspection they realised that the flames came from the burning Transnet pipeline. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team and local police were summoned to the scene for further investigation. Following an intensive search, a second suspect who was also badly burnt, was apprehended after he was found hiding under a bridge. Emergency services were summoned, and the two suspects were transported to the hospital under police guard. All the exhibits, which included a white Mazda bakkie, generator and pieces of charred clothes were confiscated for further investigation. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, is perturbed by incidences where gun taunting individuals often fire shots randomly at funerals. Another incident recently took place over the weekend. These individuals become trigger happy and discharge firearms totally disregarding the law and lives of other funeral attendees or children. General Zuma therefore condemns such incidences in the strongest terms and indicated that such dangerous actions must not be supported. “Bereaved families must assist police and not allow criminals to discharge firearms during funerals of their loved ones, irrespective of how the deceased behaved while still alive. The condemnation by General Zuma comes after four men and a woman were arrested on Saturday, 19 September 2020, by the Tactical Response Team members. The suspects are alleged to have attended a funeral at Masoyi Trust. Their arrest came after police received damning reports about certain individuals who were busy firing shots at a funeral claiming they were bidding farewell to their friend. In that regard, police followed this information and cornered the suspects at Hazyview, whereupon searching them, police found two unlicensed firearms loaded with ammunition. Yesterday, 21 September 2020, the villains made their first appearance at the White River Magistrate’s Court, where they were all remanded in custody until Friday, 25 September 2020. Sfiso Mkhabela 31 years old, Sipho Khoza 36, Sendra Ngwenya 33, Sizwe Johannes Mkhabela 26 and Eulanda Mlimi 28, were all not asked to plea hence they were sent packing back to custody. Last month, a similar incident occurred at Marite Trust near Hazyview where a group of lawlessness individuals also fired shots after a funeral in a so called after tears event. In that occasion, the Tactical Response Team members responded but were shot at by the very same suspects who were negligently using firearms. They (police) had to defend themselves at which two suspects were fatally shot, meanwhile a third one was injured. Their case is expected back at the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on 21 October 2020, whereas they will also appear for the Lockdown Regulations’ case on 19 October 2020, which the other five will join them in the dock. “This is surely enough evidence showing how some individuals can disregard the law to that extent. I urge the community not to celebrate such actions nor tap these unscrupulous individuals on their shoulders and unduly crowning them champions or wise. Report these people to the police because they are a danger to the society,” concluded General Zuma. The upheaval from the council and community due to the illegal appointment of the Msukaligwa Local Municipality acting troika has ruffled a myriad of feathers. Under cloak and dagger, however, it had been announced that the municipal council fully elected the troika. Ironically, the same acting members that have received stiff opposition has now been elected by unanimous vote, according to a source. It has been announced that the acting trio is now fully at the helm. Cllr Xaba has been elected as speaker, Cllr MP Nkosi has been elected as executive mayor, and Cllr PC Sibeko has been elected as chief whip. According to the municipality, 34 out of the 38 councillors voted in favor of the appointments. The response from the community has been wholly divided, where some congratulated the appointed members. However, other members of the community vented their frustration, and allegations of insufficient educational qualifications have also once again surfaced. The announcement of the troika comes at a most inauspicious time, as the result of the High Court case is expected to be received this week, after it was postponed due to outstanding documentation. Speaking to Mandla Zwane, municipal spokesman, he confirmed that the decisions taken by the current troika, such as the budget presentation and other expenditure decisions, will remain in place until such a time that the court case is settled. Upon enquiry if the mayoral chain featured on the photo is the one that had been alleged as being missing in action, the municipality stated that the chain was used for photography and inauguration purposes, and that it is not the chain of Msukaligwa Local Municipality. The Tribune also requested the final budget figures from the municipality as implemented during the budget layout meeting.
