Interested parties can also contact the CMR office on 017 819 1163. With great pride and joy, the Ermelo Lighthouse was officially opened on Friday, 15 October 2021. During the ceremony hosted at the lighthouse, the CMR expressed their gratitude towards Msukaligwa Local Municipality for their support with the initiative. They also expressed their gratitude to all the volunteers currently involved with the project. The CMR’s Jeanah Motsamai, amongst others, thanks the roleplayers for their involvement with the project. The video of her speech can be viewed on our Facebook page, Tribune Ermelo. She also announced during the ceremony that a recovering addict, Sfiso, has also stepped in to assist with the drug addicts and prostitutes in Ermelo. Sfiso has experience in this field, and had been involved in shelters and assistance of recovering addicts seeking help. The CMR has stated that they will start from the roots up, and uplift and assist the community members who have no way out, and eventually reform these individuals to contribute, and take their place in the community. “I used to introduce myself as ‘Sfiso the addict’, and I am struggling with a disease that only Christ can take away. I grew up in these streets, and was part of the problem on these streets. I am now part of the solution on these very same streets, but it is a struggle. We need to stand united, as this issue doesn’t only affect the struggling addicts, but it also affects us a community and neigbours. Before joining the lighthouse project, I was running a recovery house in Davel. In Davel, we assisted those in need, and promoted the word of God to these individuals, and saw the power of faith. We saw them change, and gave them new hope on life. However, the issue that we face is that these individuals always return to the same community where there’s still drugs, prostitution and more. I asked God for a way to deal with these issues, and he guided me to change the environment. This will be my mission by joining the lighthouse project. Another issue is to allocate the addicts and prostitutes seeking help to contribute to the community. Many of these individuals really wants help, but when rehabilitated, what will they do, and where will they go? We will aim to provide alternative means of making a living, and better the lives of those seeking assistance. If we address the physical and psychological side of the issue, but neglect the spiritual side, we will still have a problem,” Sfiso said. The CMR would also like to thank the Ermelo East Church for providing the facility where the lighthouse is located. Therefore, Minister Dippenaar was asked to cut the ribbon, officiating the launch of the facility. At the facility, homeless people, drug addicts, and those in need will be able to clean themselves at the institution, as well washed their colthes on a daily basis. The Lighthouse also provides social workers for the necessary support, and there will be a decent and healthy plate of food available every day. The CMR also aims to provide several forms of training to these individuals, in an attempt to integrate them back into the community. There will be different tasks daily that will be performed by those seeking assistance, thus maintaining productivity. There is also a safe room at the lighthouse, which will serve as a safe haven for one night where there were difficult conditions within a family. There are currently many businesses that have opened their hearts and joined hands with the CMR. Security guards will be on duty every day and every night, and the local SAPS has also agreed to help with the security of the premises. The CMR would, however, like to appeal to the community to volunteer at the lighthouse, with the day to day operations. There can never be too many helping hands with the operations. The CMR also still requires donations of food, coffee, milk, sugar, pots and pans, cutlery and crockery on the short term. Toiletries, cleaning detergents, clothes, shoes and especially socks are required. Blankets are also needed. The long term needs include, but are not limited to deep freezes, refrigerators, tables and working surfaces, chairs or couches for the reception area, kitchen cupboards, tables, chairs and benches. It’s not all bad news, though. MLM has managed to whittle their water debt down from R676 million over the span of a year. MLM has managed to whittle their water debt down from R676 million over the span of a year. However, as demand increases, so does the debt, and in turn, so does the repayment. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has urged the public to continue using the available water wisely, sparingly and in a more conservative manner as the Spring and Summer approaches. However, the department also made the announcement of ballooning municipal debt. Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) has officially taken the crown from the notorious trio, Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, Lekwa Local Municipality and Emalahleni Local Municipality, with debt owed to the DWS to the tune of R598 417 326. This is money that could have gone towards the delivery of services. MLM has become synonymous for water supply shortages, water outages and dubious water quality due to dilapidated infrastructure. This further aggravated by the fruitless and irregular expenditure of nearly R60 million, as per the 2019/2020 annual report. Later figures were not available at time of publication. An actual water distribution loss of approximately 42% was reported. The losses and debt aren’t the least of MLM’s worries, though. Ermelo and the surrounding areas are rapidly expanding, and a significant increase in demand of water has been noted. Adequate water provision is still a major issue for the municipality, so much so that they have been dragged to the Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) due to the lack of running and potable water within its areas of governance. Following a massive hoopla and extensive investigations, MLM was, for all intents ad purposes, forced to provide service delivery to destitute residents struggling with water provision. At great financial strain, the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, announced the Greater Breyten Water Supply Scheme project in Warburton in March 2021. The project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2024, will ensure that the residents in Breyten, Chrissiesmeer, Lothair and Warburton will have access to water. It’s not all bad news, though. Feedback is being awaited from the Rand Water Board regarding the status of MLM. According to the latest figures, at 84.0%, the Morgenstond Dam in the Gert Sibande District is the only dam that remained unchanged in the province. The rest of the listed dams in the district continued to drop, with Grootdraai Dam dropping from 79.9% to 79.3%, Nooitgedacht from 95.1% to 95.0%, Vygeboom from 93.9% to 92.9%, Jericho from 71.4% to 70.5%, Westoe from 58.2% to 56.6% and Heyshope from 84.5% to 84.4%. The DWS encourages responsible water use to prevent the unnecessary loss of precious water in the province. Toil and trouble for motorists in Camden Avenue 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 17 August 2021 The drivers of these heavy vehicles are supposedly liable to a fine of R1500, and traffic officials do an excellent job at clamping down on a large number of heavy vehicles in the CBD. Alas, the lament of the residential wards seem to be the least of MLM’s worries. “What are they even doing in the residential area? I mean, there are traffic officers who live near here, who drive past these trucks every day. Nothing is being done. The municipality ignores our pleas, and the traffic department couldn’t be bothered.” These are the words of a frustrated resident in De Bruin Park, where several self-titled businessmen park their heavy vehicles at night, lining the streets and obstructing the traffic flow. During the early morning rush hour traffic, these lumbering vehicles have been reported driving carelessly, ignoring stop siggns and traffic lights, making u-turns in front of oncoming traffic, and being a general nuisance to the residents in the area. “I can’t see if there are oncoming traffic when I exit my yard, because my view is blocked by a heavy vehicle which is parked on the sidewalk. It’s very dangerous, and nothing is being done about it.” Camden Avenue is known for its motorists who travel at unacceptably high speed, and often disregard the rules of the road. These dangerous drivers, coupled with the heavy vehicles that have no business being in a residential area, is a recipe for disaster. Despite the issue being raised with Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) on several occasions, the issue persists, and has, in fact, worsened. Heavy vehicles, which transport coal, large loads and often livestock, can be spotted in Camden Avenue on a daily basis. These heavy vehicles have on several occasions been deemed as a danger to road users and pedestrians, especially college students and children whose parents reside in the Autumn Ridge security village. Heavy vehicle drivers have, on numerous occasions, been spotted double parking on the sidewalks to offload passengers, damaging curbs and street signs by misjudging turns, driving at excessively high or low speeds, in both cases frustrating motorists to a large extent. This issue is, however, not confined to De Bruin Park, as there are several wards in Ermelo East where heavy vehicles are parked in the road at night, and often detach their trailers, leaving it on the roadside as an accident waiting to happen. Daar is verskeie ouderdomme inwoners, van klein kindertjies wat mens aanstaar met honger ogies, tot ouer mense wat nie weet hoe om vir hulle kinders te verduidelik dat daar nie kos of geld is nie. Nou dat ons in die hart van die winter is, is daar mense wat nie eers warm klere of komberse het nie. Die Ermelo gemeenskap het op Saterdag, 27 Junie, hul harte opgemaak deur vir minder bevoorregte mense kos-, klere- asook kospakkies te gaan aflewer. Die gemeenskap van Ermelo het dit goed gedink om oor ‘n verlengde tydperk al die insamelings te doen vir die minder bevoorregte mense. Daar is verskeie ouderdomme inwoners, van klein kindertjies wat mens aanstaar met honger ogies, tot ouer mense wat nie weet hoe om vir hulle kinders te verduidelik dat daar nie kos of geld is nie. Nou dat ons in die hart van die winter is, is daar mense wat nie eers warm klere of komberse het nie. Die projek is onlangs geloots om hierdie mense se behoeftes te bevredig. MBCF invites members to join the cause 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 10 November 2020 “People have been accepting the unacceptable for far too long, and unfortunately there are no quick fixes. But what is important is to start”. The legal council for the Msukaligwa Business and Community Forum (MBCF), Mr. Andreas Peens, recently joined in a meeting with members of the MBCF committee in Ermelo. It is with great excitement that the announcement has been made that membership forms are now available to interested parties. During the meeting, Mr. Peens discussed immediate and long term legal strategy, and gave feedback on the matter of the application to stop the NMD load shedding currently being implemented by Eskom and Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). The case will be heard in court on 12 November 2020. He also discussed the next urgent steps of addressing sewerage, water, rubbish removal and environmental issues in town. Furthermore, the issue of incorrect municipal accounts, accounts not being received by businesses and residents, and the system being offline at the municipality for weeksat end, were also discussed. Mr. Peens indicated that a document will be made available to the MBCF that can be distributed to its members in order to help them lodge a dispute with regards to irregular water and electricity accounts. This will prevent MLM from suspending services to businesses and residents until the irregularity has been resolved. Members also addressed the current frustration at the licensing office, where only 50 renewal applications are being processed per day. Also on the cards was the fact that the municipality allegedly refuses the installation of prepaid electricity meters at business premises, to which Mr. Peens relayed some insightful strategy in resolving the challenges going forward. The Bethal Regional Court on Wednesday, 17 March 2021, sentenced Mfundo Muzi Mpondombi (31) to 15 years direct imprisonment for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances, and 8 years for attempted murder which the sentence will run concurrently. The sentence follows the incident which took place on the 12 October 2018, whereby G4S Security guards were collecting money from OK in Bethal. On the day, the G4S staff member emerged from OK with the money trolley, when he was accosted by the suspect. The security guard was subsequently shot and wounded, whereafter the suspect grabbed the trolley and attempted to flee on foot. The SAPS and the security gave chase, and managed to arrest the first suspect. The second suspect, who shot the G4S officer, grabbed the dropped money and ran away. The stolen money was later recovered. Die leerders van Laerskool JJ van der Merwe het elk verskeie onderwerpe gehad waaroor hulle kon debateer tydens die redenaarsbyeenkoms. Hier is die leerders van verskeie grade van die interne redenaarskompetisie - Graad 1 tot 3: agter (v.l.n.r): Kelcey Botes, Eddie Prinsloo, Janko Rautenbach, Luney Robberts, en voor (v.l.n.r): Amonette van Eck, Amjee Mentz en Genevieve Bell. Danie het jou hulp nodig 1/1 Share SH HATTINGH 20 April 2021 Danie ry daagliks ongeveer 4 kilometer met sy rolstoel om te gaan werk. Danie Geel (40) ‘n bekende in die gemeenskap het jou hulp nodig. Hy het aan die einde van 2005 gekla oor rug pyn, en is hospitaal toe, waar hy net n inspuiting ontvang het vir pyn. Die volgende oggend het hy wakker geword om te gaan werk, waar hy geen gevoel gehad in sy bene nie. Hy is per ambulans na die hospitaal geneem, en hulle het hom later die dag oorgeplaas na Pretoria waar hul nog dieselfde aand ‘n rug operasie gedoen het. Na die operasie het die dokters hom ingelig dat hy nie weer sal kan loop nie. “Laas jaar het ons as gesin Dr. Nel van die Zuid Afrikaans Hospitaal geskakel om ‘n opvolg konsultasie te reël vir Danie, omdat ons gehoop het dalk sal daar iets wees wat die dokter kon doen, of dalk kon sê of daar ‘n kans kan wees vir hom om weer te kan loop, omdat hy so nou en dan gevoel kry in sy bene. Ons kon daarin slaag om Dr. Nel op 12 April 2021 te sien, en ongelukkig is daar geen hoop vir Danie om weer te kan loop nie. Omdat hy nie medies het wat die kostes kan dek nie, wil ons graag vra vir hulp om die rekening te kan vereffen van die MRI skandering wat gedoen is. Die familie wil ook die gemeenskap vra om vir Danie te kan help met ‘n donasie, sodat hulle vir Danie ‘n ordentlike rolstoel kan koop. Danie ry daagliks ongeveer 4 kilometer met sy rolstoel om te gaan werk. Daar is ‘n Trust rekening gestig by PAS Prokureurs.
