Cassim Park tumbling downhill 1/4 Share GK CRONJE 12 January 2022 Dissatisfaction has also been directed at the behavior of municipal refuse collectors, who allegedly contribute to the pollution issue faced by residents. Amidst the alarming lack service delivery experienced in Ermelo and its surroundings, Cassim Park is getting the short end of the stick regarding maintenance from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). What was once the pride and joy of residents in this area, Cassim Park has since regressed to a hollow shadow of its former glory. Streets are riddled with potholes, a myriad of worksites are left incomplete, several streetlights are either damaged and leaning dangerously towards the roadway, or completely out of order, and uncollected refuse litter the sidewalks. Grass on municipal grounds are long and unkempt, and council buildings, covered in graffiti and obscene spray painted images, rot away in glorious non-maintenance. Residents are fuming at the fact that they face electricity issues on a daily basis, often being left for hours without electricity, with a very slow response rate from municipal departments. Speaking to residents in the area, they claim to have reported these issues they face on a daily basis to MLM on several occasions, with no joy. Apart from the above, residents are also wholly disgusted with the multiplying heaps of household refuse and building rubble on the sidewalks and in the wards. Dissatisfaction has also been directed at the behavior of municipal refuse collectors, who allegedly contribute to the pollution issue faced by residents. “Some weeks the refuse collection service doesn't even arrive. When they do, they make more of a mess than anything else, tearing the refuse bags and leaving the aftermath for us to clean up. It's a constant uphill battle with service delivery from Msukaligwa Local Municipality. Because they often don't collect the refuse, some residents have taken it upon themselves to ditch their household refuse in fields and parking areas. It's shocking, to say the least.” These were the words of an unhappy resident in Cassim Park. She contacted the Tribune ePaper regarding the growing refuse issue that plagues Cassim Park, and the nonchalant behavior from teams responsible for refuse removal. Upon investigation, it is clear that Cassim Park is in service delivery crisis. Once beautiful buildings and shopping centres have been reduced to husks of their former glory, with vagrants and vandals taking their toll on municipal buildings and infrastructure. The sidewalks and wards are littered with uncollected refuse, business premises are wrought with debris, fallen lampposts and all manner of unsavory items. Op Vrydag, 21 Julie 2022, het 21 leerders van Hoërskool Ermelo deelgeneem aan die jaarlikse nasionale Con Spirito-kunswedstryd. Die leerders het in die volgende kategorieë meegeding in Afrikaans en/of Engels: instrumentaal, vokaal, kuns, skryfkuns, lees (voorbereid en/of onvoorbereid) asook redenaars (voorbereid en/of onvoorbereid). Daar is twee uitdunrondes in Mpumalanga gehou: een te Hoërskool Secunda en een te Hoërskool Ermelo. Uit die Mpumalanga-uitdunne het die Erries 18 itemwenners (m.a.w. beste in die provinsie) opgelewer. Indien ‘n leerder nie as item wenner aangewys is nie, maar steeds ‘n hoë genoeg punt behaal het, dring die betrokke leerder steeds deur na die nasionale finaal, bekend as die Forte-ronde. Hoërskool Ermelo bedank die ErrieUnie, asook Nashua Highveld wat elk groot bedrae geskenk het vir die opgradering van tegnologie in die Erries se klaskamers. GMM inwoners in groot waterverknorsing 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 24 November 2020 GMM skuld Rand Water 'n astronomiese bedrag van R314 miljoen, en het herhaaldelik versuim om betalingsooreenkomste na te kom. Die feit dat Govan Mbeki Munisipaliteit (GMM) inwoners totaal en al gefaal het ten opsigte van dienslewering sit dwars in die krop van alle inwoners en besighede onder die GMM-dienslewerings gebied. Watertoevoer na die GMM gebied is met bykans 60% gesny, nadat GMM weereens nie hul betalingsooreenkoms nagekom het aan Rand Water nie. Nadat inwoners grootskaalse amok gemaak het ten opsigte van GMM se swak diensleweing, beskuldig GMM nou vandale vir die beskadiging van verskillende pompstasies, wat die situasie glo vererger omdat water nie in en uit die waterreservoirs gepomp kan word nie. Inwoners en besighede val egter nie vir hierdie veskoning nie, aangesien die toevoer al vir ‘n aantal jare agteruit gegaan het, en tans op die drumpel van totale afsluiting is. Die leerders se kodes word geskandeer met al die nodige inligting van die betrokke leerder, sy/haar temperatuur en COVID-19 kontrole lys se antwoorde. Hierdie inligtigting word digitaal in gelees en gestoor in die wolk. Te wyte aan van COVID-19, is die inteken van leerders elke oggend ‘n groot uitdaging vir baie skole. Die Erries is egter gerat om ook hierdie uitdaging so vlot as moontlik te laat verloop. Die Noord-Wes Universiteit het ‘n toepassing ontwikkel om die proses van intekening te vergemaklik. Die Tjop-Tjop-toepassing werk deur ‘n unieke QR-kode wat vir elke leerder ontwikkel is. Die leerders se kodes word geskandeer met al die nodige inligting van die betrokke leerder, sy/haar temperatuur en COVID-19 kontrole lys se antwoorde. We can’t maintain all the roads, it is impossible, and funding is also a problem. We try to patch as many holes as possible, but there is just no way that some can again be repaired, because the roads are in poor condition,” Bekker stated. AfriForum is back in action in Bethal as lockdown restrictions ease, and Hennie Bekker, District Coordinator stated that they are hoping to fill another 300 potholes with a new latex tar mixture, which is said to be just as effective as the normal cold premix. High water table proves problematic for MLM 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 18 October 2022 Thulatsepo General Trading was appointed as contractor for the project, with a completion date of 30 June 2023. Residents in De Bruin Park have been left baffled, after contractors excavated an extended portion of the main sewerage line between Camden Avenue and Roberts Street, at the Pet Dam. Residents were told by the said contractor that they were appointed to upgrade the sewerage line to alleviate spillage issues. However, they have done more harm than good. In President Fouché Avenue, near the Roberts Street intersection, raw sewage has been flowing for months into the field. The trenches dug by the alleged contractor merely exacerbated the issue, with several more spillage points being noted following excavation. In Mauritz Read Street, towards Camden Avenue, trenches had been excavated months ago, and stood as a white elephant since. Building materials, including concrete and PVC sewerage infrastructure pipes have been put on display in the field, along with heaps of sand and gravel. Residents have now alerted the Tribune to the fact that the trenches dug in this area are being filled up. The main concern here being that there has seemingly been absolutely no work done on the sewerage network. The trenches are filled with raw sewage, and are now simply filled with soil. Storm drains have been trampled and destroyed by heavy machinery, and are left as is. In one of the trenches, a storm drainage pipe can be noted, which is also damaged. To the point of where the trenches are filled, no sign of upgraded or replaced pipes can be noted. In an official response, Msukaligwa Local Municipality stated that BTMN Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd were appointed to undertake the feasibility study and detailed designs for the Upgrading of Ermelo Extension 32, 33 & 34 outfall sewer pipeline. Thulatsepo General Trading was appointed as contractor for the project, with a completion date of 30 June 2023. “The excavated sewer line trench was barricaded by the contractor, pending the engineer’s instruction of working along the areas with excessive water table. The engineer’s representative has reported that the contractor has started with backfilling the trench, in order to re-excavate and follow the engineer’s site instruction,” the statement from the municipality reads. “It is untrue that the contractor has left the site and trenched unattended. The contractor has been procuring materials required for working under high water-table areas like this one. Materials such as crusher run stones, geofabric biddim blanket and perforated subsoil drain pipes are required in order to follow the engineer’s instruction.” However, several residents have brought the train of thought by MLM and appointed contractors in question. “Surely, they should have taken the constant sewage the flows into the field, which is actually wetland, into account. It is only logical that the water table would be high, but it surely isn’t water,” one resident stated. “So, in reality, the entire exercise of months of digging, damaging infrastructure, pipes and stormdrains, have all been for nought? The trenches have been left for months to fill with raw sewage, only to be closed again because of shoddy planning... That is beyond a joke,” another told the Tribune. Concern has been raised as the summer rain season approaches, and the trenches and surrounding work area left with heaps of loose soil, which will prove problematic, seen as this specific area floods annually, due to the non-existent stormwater drainage infrastructure. The mess left in the wake of litterbug residents who use the Pet Dam and Sport Inn parking area as a party site, defying the COVID-19 regulations set forth by government. After numerous complaints falling on deaf ears regarding the Pet Dam, and residents who swarm to the site daily in order to get the party started, it has come to pass that drastic measures have been forcibly implemented by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). In light of the blatant disregard from residents who use the dam as a party site, and who pay no heed to social distancing and COVID-19 regulations, MLM has issued a closure of the Pet Dam on Friday, with immediate effect. MLM has stated that an increase in COVID-19 cases is the reason for the closure, and that the Local Command Council (LCC) has made the decision. While the decision has been met with favorable response, some residents have vented their frustration on social media regarding the decision. Upon MLM stating that the SAPS will be requested to assist in clearing crowds that do not adhere to COVID-19 regulations, one resident stated that “the SAPS can go to hell”, whilst another stated that the decision to close the Pet Dam is “part of the white agenda” and that “residents are being oppressed”. However, even though the lockdown restrictions have eased to National Alert Level 1, the law set forth by government is clear in this respect. The regulations, as gazetted, states that all citizens must, when in a public place, wear a face mask. Every person, when attending a gathering, and in order to limit exposure to COVID-19 must wear a face mask, adhere to all health protocols, maintain a distance of least one and a half meters from each other; and adhere to any other health protocols and social distancing measures. An enforcement officer must, where a gathering in contravention of the regulations takes place, order the persons at the gathering to disperse immediately, and if the persons refuse to disperse, take appropriate action, which may, subject to the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977 (Act No. 51 of 1977), include the arrest and detention of any person at the gathering. In essence, none of the regulations are followed at the Pet Dam and surrounding areas, including the Sport Inn, where residents opted to occupy since the closure of the Pet Dam. The Sport Inn parking lot has been left in shambles, littered with empty liquor bottles and other manner of refuse. Parts of the Pet Dam’s fence have also allegedly been damaged, yet it is still to be confirmed. Speaking to Mr. Zwane, MLM spokesman, he stated that the Pet Dam’s gates will be locked to prevent access, and that security detail will patrol the area of the Pet Dam to ensure compliance from defiant residents. Residents are urged to adhere to COVID-19 regulations, which have been set in place to contain the spread of the virus by limiting social interaction and gatherings. < Previous Article Next Article >
