World Alzheimer’s Month: Understand the warning signs and symptoms of dementia 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 8 September 2020 Memory loss that disrupts daily life may be a symptom of dementia, a brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. There are warning signs and symptoms, but every individual may experience one or more of these signs to a different degree. One of the most common signs of dementia, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, and this September, for World Alzheimer’s Month, Livewell aims to encourage understanding, reduce stigma, and raise awareness around this common, yet devastating disease. Others include forgetting important dates or events, asking for the same information over and over, and increasingly needing to rely on aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own. Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. People with dementia often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes they may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work or remembering the rules of a favorite game. People with dementia can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. For some people, having vision problems is a sign of dementia. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance, and determining colour or contrast, which may cause problems with driving. People with dementia may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g., calling a “watch” a “hand clock.”) A person with dementia may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. People with dementia may experience changes in judgment or decision making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large amounts to telemarketers. They may pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. A person with dementia may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may have trouble keeping up with a favourite sports team or remembering how to complete a favourite hobby. They may also avoid being social because of the changes they have experienced. The mood and personalities of people with dementia can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. On Saturday and Sunday, the Community Police Forum (CPF) with SAPS held a meeting with the community. On Saturday, the meeting was held at Nyibe Sport Grounds, where the community of Nyibe could raise their concerns regarding all the crime in the area. During the meeting, the community raised their voices about, rape, murder and illegal shebeens and taverns. The biggest concerns are the shebeens and taverns that doesn’t have legal liquor licenses, and that stay open the whole night. The community members requested the SAPS and CPF member to do patrols in the area. After the meeting, quick arrangements were made from the SAPS, and a patrol was done. Several tuckshops was asked by SAPS members to close their shops. During the night, alcohol was confiscated from shebeens that couldn’t show their license to the SAPS. Patrols were done through all the informal settlements to search for illegal taverns and shebeens. On Sunday, the second meeting was held at School of Rail, TransNet in Klein Street. Sector 3 community attended the meeting, and every community member raised their concerns in Sector 3. The biggest concerns are the use of drugs, and the prostitution. The chairperson of Sector 3, Mr. Dumisani, told the community members that there is an action plan regarding all the issues in the sector, and that they will be doing all the patrols and all the necessary planning to stop all of issues in the sector. The SAPS would also like to inform the community of Ermelo about all the online scams that are currently doing the round on the internet. The biggest scam is the company called Ermelo Auctioneers, that sell vehicles for a ridiculous good price, but before you can see the vehicle you need to do a deposit so that they can keep the vehicle for you. Remember, if its to good to be true, its not true. Please be aware of all the scammers on the internet. Much to the excitement of emerging farmers, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRD) launched a programme where individuals could apply for available agricultural state land, as part of the government contribution to the land reform programme. According to the DLRD, government issued notices of 896 farms, measuring 700 0000 hectares of underutilized or vacant state land in various provinces. The lease agreement signed between the state and the beneficiary will be a legally binding contractual agreement, and will be legally binding for 30 years. The lease obligates the beneficiary to maintain all the infrastructure and upkeep of the land allocated to him/her. Beneficiaries will pay a monthly or annual rental fee per hectare determined by the state, consistent with the value of the land in line with area valuation. A credit management system will be put in place to manage debt recovery and management. This sounds idyllic, and a dream come true for cash-strapped prospective agriculture boffins. Alas, the dream has turned to a corruption nightmare, as complaints from farmers are surfacing with troubling regularity. A large number of farmers across all provinces, who have contracts with the state, and who has made a great success of their farms, are being strong-armed off their farms by government officials in a spectacular display of contract breach. Some farmers have been given only 24 hours to vacate their property, as DLRD officials pounce on these successful farms. Close to home, Amersfort farmer Swazi Motha, producer of maize, soya and dry beans for over 10 years, is one of the farmers caught in the breach of contract by the state. Motha is the coordinator of the Mkhululi Agri Union, which has been established to oppose the eviction of farmers who have contracts. More than 30 affected farmers reside in Mpumalanga. Maize and cattle farmer in Ermelo, John Mabasa, have also been subjected to the contract breach from the state. Mabasa has been tending to his farm since 2013, where his father and grandfather also farmed. Allegations of corruption from the state and its officials have since been the centre of attention, as some successful farmers have allegedly been offered to be relocated to other farms. This raises several questions, as to the logic behind state officials reclaiming successful farms, and breaching contract. Affected farmers are extremely unhappy with the U-turn by the DLRD and its officials. The terms and conditions of the contract requires applicants to jump through endless hoops, and submit a mountain of paperwork to be approved, only to have the rug pulled from under them as their farms flourish. At this point in time, there is no feasible explanation as to the behaviour of the DLRD. The Tribune ePaper have attempted on several occasions to engage with the DLRD. The Ermelo branch simply smacked down the phone in the journalist’s ear, and has since not answered the telephone at all. Attempts to contact a DLRD spokesperson, one Gugu Nkosi, yielded no result. The DLRD did also not respond to correspondence at the time of going to print. TLU demands clarity on hunting regulations 1/0 Share GK CRONJE 4 August 2020 “We urge the department and government to explain why these regulations were revised,” says Mr. Meintjes. “Farmers are already fed up with the impact of the lockdown while government depends on them to continue with food production. The day will come when farmers cannot supply the demand anymore.” Media Statement - TLU SA demands an explanation about the revised regulations published in the Government Gazette on Tuesday which prohibits interprovincial travel for hunting. The department of environment, forestry and fisheries also put an end to accommodation for hunters with the regulations. “It is utterly reckless and irrational to publish these types of regulations,” says Mr. Louis Meintjes, the president of TLU SA. “This is another economic blow for game farmers who’ve had massive losses because of the regulations during the first week of the lockdown. Our members already accepted deposits and made arrangements for hunters from other provinces who would have hunted with them. The risk for the spread of COVID-19 in remote areas, where people have little contact with each other, is minimal.” Game farmers had to forfeit the income from international hunters this year and depended on local hunters to have at least some form of revenue during the hunting season. Now they have minimal opportunity to earn an income and keep their farms running. It will have an impact on employment as well. In April Wildlife Ranching South Africa reported that the limitations had negatively impacted 67% of all employers in the game industry. In many rural areas, the local economy depends on hunters and game farmers spending money in the town or district. Nel (skoolhoof) asook Mev. Bester ( beheerliggaam voorsitter) gehad, waar die hele situasie mooi verduidelik is. Die Top Tien is nie weg gevat nie, dit word nou net verbreed. Elke leerder wat bo 85% behaal, word vereer en die nuwe benaming sal dan Akademiese Presteerder wees. Dit gee net elke leerder ‘n kans om deel te vorm van die groep, en om hard te werk sodat die leerder 85% kan behaal. On Wednesday, 19 January 2022, the executive mayor, Cllr Mahlalela, accompanied by the technical services MMC, Cllr Zulu, hosted a meet and greet with affected parties in Hardewyk Road, Nederland Park, to affirm their commitment to improving the service delivery in Ermelo, especially the condition of the roads. Various roleplayers in the private and business sector attended the meeting, explaining how the community is adversely affected by state of the roads in Ermelo. The MMC assured all attendees that they were in the works of procuring the machinery and cold asphalt needed to commence repairs. Fast forward to 29 March 2022, and Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) is missing in action. Where the community scoffed at the promises made by the municipal management, the notion of distrust has now taken form. To date, not a single pothole had been repaired in Hardewyk Road, where the initial repairs were said to start. On the contrary, the state of the road is worse, not to mention 90% of the roadways in Ermelo and the surrounding areas. Road users suffer damages to their vehicles and tyres on a daily basis, with no reprieve in sight. Additionally, some of the self-repair strategies do more harm than good, with all manner of construction rubble, bricks and shards of floor tiles being thrown into potholes, which in turn poses an additional danger to both motorists and pedestrians. Most notably, the entirety of Netherland Park is riddled with potholes and sinkholes, with Ermelo East, Cassim Park and De Bruin Park in close contest. Many of Wesselton, Sun City and Nyibe’s roads are completely untraversable. The state of Ermelo’s roads has even caused a large number of residents to mention Ermelo in Jacaranda FM’s show, Breakfast With Martin Bester, along with the hashtag, #Gatvol. Several attempts from the Tribune ePaper to clarify the situation has yielded no results. The project is a sign of unity, working together and promoting social cohesion according to Black Tool Music. Introducing the album, one of the artists from the project have been appointed to release a single track that will alert the world about this upcoming album, and that is The Composition Band. A live music entertainment group, Black Tool Music in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, is proud to present its first music collaboration album titled, The Big 5, to be released in June 2021. The album is a collection of five different upcoming artists, which includes The Composition Band, Luyanda EM, Buyiswayo Imbongi Yabaphansi, Seluleko Zulu and MC Macphera. These artists have contributed with different genres and these are, Soul Music, African Jazz, Musical Poetry, Afro Pop and Reggae. The project is a sign of unity, working together and promoting social cohesion according to Black Tool Music. In addition, Mpumalanga Province seemed to be with the most fans, with the single being featured on Ligwa FM and Rise FM. The single is also expected to hit local radio stations as popularity grows. "Our plan was to release the album in June 2020, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to postpone. Although this became a challenge, on the other hand it became a positive move giving us more time for creative planning and for more sponsors to pop up for this project. In a very short time period, the project already has at least three sponsors from companies and individuals. Na baie huil en emosies wat hoog loop, kon Danie daarin slaag om ‘n skenking vir ‘n splinternuwe rolstoel te ontvang, asook al die mediese kostes wat afbetaal is. Danie Geel (40) ‘n bekende in die gemeenskap, wil vir elke persoon in die gemeenskap, asook elke boodskap, dankie sê. Hy het aan die einde van 2005 gekla oor rug pyn, en is hospitaal toe waar hy net ‘n inspuiting ontvang het vir pyn. Werner Moller (47) ‘n welbekende in Ermelo, is op 11 Augustus 2021 oorlede. Werner was die mees vriendlikste mens wat enige persoon kon tee kom, het altyd ‘n glimlag op sy gesig gehad, en sy hand was permanent in die lug soos wat hy altyd almal gegroet het. Werner was vreeslik lief vir sy vrou, Christa en drie dogters, Wiané (16), Megan (13) en Natasha (11). Werner was ‘n groot familie mens, daar was niks in die lewe wat hom gelukkiger kon maak as om tyd saam met sy gesin te kon spandeer nie. Hy was baie lief vir die bosveld en die see, dit was vir hulle baie spesiale plekke gewees.
