Vir die Graad 12-rugbyspelers was hul wedstryd 'n bittersoet kragmeting, omdat dit die laaste rugby wedstryd van hul hoërskool loopbane was. On Thursday, 19 August 2021, Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) suffered major damages as arsonists struck in Horster Road. It had been alleged that nearby residents set the field on fire, which rapidly spread and caused extensive damage to an electrical kiosk supplying electricity to the area. The kiosk was melted beyond repair, snapping and cracking as the insulation on the high voltage cables melted. Although the fire department was notified, the service did not arrive in time to save the innards of the kiosk. SAPS destroys nearly 25 000 firearms 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 20 July 2021 “A firearm is issued to an individual and cannot be dealt with like any other asset when the owner dies. The Act provides that in case of death, the family/executor must dispose of the firearm by deactivating it through a gunsmith, sell it to an accredited firearm dealer or individual or voluntarily surrender it to SAPS for destruction,” the SAPS concluded. The South African Police Service has revealed that 24 901 firearms, which included 3 610 rifles, 3 083 shotguns and 17 383 handguns. “The police have to continually detect and remove illegal firearms from circulation, as they are being used to commit serious and violent crimes.Melting these firearms therefore ensures that the proliferation of firearms is dealt a blow. The SAPS will continue to detect and remove illegal firearms and ammunition from the streets of South Africa, as they pose a threat to the safety and security of the inhabitants of this country,” the SAPS said in a statement. The destroyed firearms included firearms voluntarily handed over during the previous two firearm amnesty periods, as well as those that were either confiscated or surrendered to the State. The smelting took place at the Cape Gate Steel in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng. According to the police, approximately half of the firearms that have been destroyed were handed in during the 2019/2020 and the 2020/2021 Firearm Amnesty periods. These amnesty firearms were also subjected to IBIS testing and there were no positive hits nor firearm applications linked to them. AfriForum has tested the water of various towns in Mpumalanga, from August to October 2020, to determine the quality of these town’s drinking water (blue drop status) and sewage water (green drop status). This project was even more important this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and research that shows that this virus could be traced in sewage systems, meaning that one can identify focus points. “We could determine that the drinking water in all the towns tested complies with the minimum standards and does not contain harmful bacteria. AfriForum will continuously test the water quality because residents have a constitutional right to clean drinking water,” says Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Lowveld. In the latest blue drop status tests, Ermelo has scored a “clean” rating, which means that tap water is safe for consumption. Bethal also scored a “clean” rating, along with Amersfoort, and Breyten. Carolina’s status is not yet available. Piet Retief scored a “clean” rating in 2020, compared to the 2019 rating, which found feacal coliform and E. Coli in the water. AfriForum’s national blue and green drop project focuses on the state of drinking water and sewage treatment plants in towns. This project does not necessarily focus on the condition of the plant itself, but rather on the quality of the water that is supplied after this process as the end product in the form of drinking water and treated sewage water,” says Bronwen Pretorius, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Highveld district. EHS-kultuur kleur gemoedere in 1/1 Share SM HATTINGH 10 August 2022 ’n Psigiater bevind haarself in ’n sielkundige inrigting om profiele saam te stel van die pasiënte. Die Erries se kultuurliefhebbers het op Donderdag, 28 Julie die eerste kultuuraand gehou en dié was ’n toonbeeld van die sukses wat EHS op kulturele gebied geniet. Die verrigtinge is op die gepaste wyse geopen deur die Kultuurvoorsitters, Aloné Arnoldi en Walter van der Walt. Die senior marimba-groep, onder leiding van meneer Phila Dladla, het eerste opgetree waarna ’n onvoorbereide debat tussen twee spanne plaasgevind het. Hierdie informele debat was aangebied met die doel om aan leerders wat nie bekend is daarmee nie, ’n voorbeeld te gee van wat debat behels. Alhoewel dit informeel was, was die debatsgesprek vurig, maar pret. Me Lizanne Dippenaar, debatsorganiseerder, het leiding geneem as voorsitter. EHS se ensemble-groep het die gehoor met melodieuse klanke bekoor, ook met meneer Phila Dladla aan stuur. Die groot opgewondenheid van die aand was EHS se drie toneelstukke wat opgevoer is ter voorbereiding van die ATKV-Tienertoneelkompetisie waaraan hulle gaan deelneem op Dinsdag 2 Augustus. Die eerste stuk, “Streng geheim,” se regie word behartig deur mnr Lourie du Plooy en mnr Ruben Fouché. Tieners wat as geheime agente optree om Suid-Afrika van ’n toerisme-aanval te red, staar menige uitdagings in die gesig. Die grootste daarvan is om hul eie identiteite ’n STRENG GEHEIM te hou. Die komedie handel oor ’n meisie wat haar vorige kêrel om die bos lei nadat hy as gevolg van ’n rugbybesering aan geheueverlies ly. Haar planne en maniere om hom die “perfekte” kêrel te maak, het die gehoor behoorlik aan die lag gehad en vele eienskappe van tipiese tieners is te sien in dié stuk. Die aand is afgesluit deur “kameR-5” wat deur me Marli Murray en me Mariaan Rust afgerig word. Hierdie is ’n fiktiewe sielkundige riller wat afspeel in 2050. ’n Psigiater bevind haarself in ’n sielkundige inrigting om profiele saam te stel van die pasiënte. Sy weet egter nie dat die “Artificial Intelligence” haar misbruik vir ’n baie spesifieke doel nie. Geheimsinnig, onvoorspelbaar en boeiend is onder andere woorde wat hierdie stuk besonder goed opsom. EHS is trots op die talent wat die leerders op die verhoog ten toon stel en waardeer die disipline wat uitvoerende kunste vereis. EHS-kultuur is voorwaar aan die brand! An enterprising and caring resident of Ermelo, Surprise “King” Makutu, has assembled a team of dedicated volunteers to tackle the deteriorating roads in Ermelo and the surrounding areas. Making use of compacted building rubble and neatly chipped and packed bricks, the King Team make the lives of motorists much easier, one pothole at a time. Their excellent workmanship with the materials that they have is nothing to be scoffed at. Speaking to Surprise at Mandela Drive in Wesselton last week, he proudly showed off the stellar work that they are doing. “We are doing the best that we can with what we have. We do the work in our own capacity, and aim to make a difference on the roads that residents use every day. However, we request donations from the community to keep up the work.” The team is highly organized, and have poinstmen directing traffic around the sites they work at. “If any business or individual would like to make a donation or has material to supply, we will greatly appreciate it. At this time, we would also greatly appreciate reflective vests and clothing, as it is extremely cumbersome working in the hot sun with full overalls. Reflective vests will also add to the safety of our initiative, as to alert road users that there are works in progress,” Surprise told the Tribune. The team also requires equipment such as spades, wheelbarrows and pickaxes, and other construction tools that can be used for road repairs, as they make do with their own scrounged equipment. According to bystanders, the deceased has been know to repeatedly ignore oncoming traffic, and has had several narrow brushes with motorists who were caught off guard by his strange behavior. On Saturday evening, two separate incidents of arson were reported. The first incident occurred when the field between Mauritz Read Street and President Fouché Avenue was set alight. Residents in this area chocked in bellows of thick smoke, and Msukaligwa Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS). In the second, unrelated incident, a yard where a house was demolished was set alight, and the fire quickly spread out of control. MFRS responded swiftly, and saved surrounding residents from certain damage, should the blaze have been left unchecked. MFRS battled the flames, which caused damage in three separate yards, and had the potential to cause much more damage than it did. The inferno was doused in record time, and despite just have fought a blaze, the firefighters were friendly and extremely well mannered. Authorities have, on several occasions, cautioned the public against acts of arson, as it is a crime. You may be liable to fine, prison sentence, or both if convicted. Culprits of arson may also be held liable for the costs incurred by rescue services. MFRS has subsequently voiced it’s concern and response to complaints and unwarranted criticism from the public. “Our firefighters had many times been accused of late arrival at the scenes of fire incidents. We’re well aware of such complaints. Fire fighters are generally accused of late arrival, even in developed countries. Reason is that fire service stations are not everywhere. That is why we are so much emphasizing on fire prevention. People should adhere strictly to fire safety rules by ensuring they avoid anything that can trigger fire outbreak. For the late arrival, mind you, our calculation of arrival time at fire scenes is different from that of victims of fire incident. We calculate arrival time from when we were alerted of the fire incident, not when the fire started burning. Our major challenge is always the distance between the fire station and where the fire outbreak occurred. Besides, we always tell the public that fire fighters are not the cause of the fire. We’re only coming to assist them in fighting the fire which they themselves caused. Considering the nature of the job and it urgency, people will never give right of way for the fire fighting trucks to pass even when they are hearing the sound of sirens. Rather than inform us immediately they noticed the fire, they would be running helter-skelter trying to quench the fire. They only remember to alert us when the fire gets out of hand. We are not spirits. We are only aware when we are informed. Another ugly experience we encounter, which ocassioned the allegation of late arrival is the periodic attacks on our officers and destruction of our equipment. One wonders what those who engage in this nefarious acts tend to achieve.
