A thriving black market encourages enterprising criminals to partake in an ongoing gate motor theft issue, and Ermelo has seen its fair share of theft. Recently, gate motor theft has been an ongoing problem in various areas of Ermelo, with criminals striking mainly between 01:00 and 04:00. A seasoned criminal can steal a gate motor without a safety bracket within 25 seconds. It is important for residents to keep records of the serial number, which makes it easier for the SAPS to track down the owner of a stolen gate motor, should it be recovered. Stolen or damaged gate motor theft also has other implications, leaving residents vulnerable, having to get out of their vehicles to open the gates, or leave their homes at night to inspect disturbances. Stolen gate motors are either stripped down and its various components, such as copper innards, batteries and gearboxes sold individually, or they are sold as complete units to unsuspecting homeowners. There is also a worrying trend of suspects deactivating the gate motor, and accessing the property while on a manual override. Residents are urged to ensure that the gate motor is secured in a steel casing or bracket, which is to remain locked at all times. Suspects often just place their hands through the gate if your gate motor is unsecured and installed right next to a palisade-type gate. They are then able to switch the gate to manual, and access your property. Use a good quality lock to secure the motor’s theft-resistant cage, preferably opt for an insurance-rated padlock. Installing adequate anti-lift brackets, and welding a piece of flat bar onto the gate rack to prevent thieves from bending the rack upwards will also hinder the theft of your gate motor. The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liason (DCSSL) convened a multisectoral safety and security Imbizo on Sunday, 28 August. The programme was supported by different stakeholders as part of mobilising communities against crime, and aims to strengthen existing partnerships between government and the community. This is as a result of the high levels of criminal activities caused by, amongst others, gangsterism and substance abuse in Ermelo and the surrounding communities. Recently, the community of Ermelo was dismayed when a learner from Cebisa Secondary School was stabbed to death by a fellow learner, after a conflict ensued between their rival gangs. The Imbizo was organised by DCSSL in conjunction with the local police, community policing forum, SGBs, churches and other community structures. The Ermelo citizens were also provided with an opportunity to provide their input on safety and security matters affecting their community. All stakeholders vowed to work in collaboration with the Mpumalanga government in combating the social ills that continue to affect their community. The Department of Education was also encouraged by the outcome of the Imbizo, as it will also contribute towards enhancing safety in schools. Mr. Oubaas de Jager from ACSU was also present at the Imbizo, where he also encouraged the communities to work with ACSU and the SAPS, so that Ermelo can be a crime-free town. During Imbizo, the MEC DCSSL, Vusi Shongwe, addressed the community members, where he said: “Enough is enough, we are not afraid of the gangsterisms in Ermelo. Die een area in Ermelo waar mens kan drink tot jy omval, terug na jou voete sukkel, in jou voertuig in slinger, jou enjin aanskakel, en in die donkerte van die nag wegjaag met bande wat skreeu. Die Pet Dam bly maar eens ‘n doring in die vlees van Ermelo inwoners, klaarblyklil versteek onder 'n sluier van ondeelbaarheid, waar allerlei onwettige aktiwiteite heeltemal geïgnoreer word deur beide wetstoepassers en Msukaligwa Plaaslike Munisipaliteit (MLM). Die voortdurende rommelstrooiery van besope inwoners, geraasbesoedeling van vroegoggend tot ver na 02:00 soggens, openbare ontlasting en urinering in die dam en op die perseel, roekelose en nalatige bestuur onder die invloed van alkohol, afvuur van vuurwapens, die aanhoudende stroom voertuie wat die verkeerswette verontagsaam, prostitute oplaai en aflaai, en dubbelparkeer in die pad terwyl karig geklede dames op en af marsjeer, laat veel te wense oor. Boonop het 'n ondernemende individu dit oënskynlik op homself geneem om 'n karwas in die Pet Dam se parkeerterrein te open. Die Mpumalanga Drankwet maak dit tog duidelik dat enige persoon wat gewelddadig, dronk of wanordelik is op enige perseel of plek waartoe die publiek toegang het of gegun word, of wat enige drank in enige pad, straat, baan of deurgang verbruik, opgelê kan word met 'n boete of gevangenisstraf. Enige persoon wat enige bepaling van hierdie Wet oortree, is skuldig aan 'n misdryf, en strafbaar met 'n boete soos van tyd tot tyd bepaal kan word, of gevangenisstraf vir 'n tydperk van hoogstens twee jaar, of met beide sodanige boete en gevangenisstraf. Behalwe dit, stel die MLM-verordeninge dit duidelik dat geen persoon ‘n gevaar mag wees of 'n oorlas, aanstootlik of 'n ergernis vir die inwoners of publiek mag wees nie. Dié wette word egter op ‘n daaglikse basis oortree, met absoluut geen reaksie vanaf MLM of ander owerhede nie. Die munisipale verordeninge bepaal verder dat geen persoon dronk mag wees, 'n oorlas van homself maak deur die gebruik van alkohol of ander bedwelmende middels, of enige oorlas in 'n openbare park mag pleeg nie. Ongelukkig skaterlag dié inwoners in die gesig van die gereg, want geen wetstoepassing kan waargeneem word nie. Ten tyde van publikasie, was die vermelde boete R2 000, oftewel 6 maande gevangenisstraf. In die lig van bogenoemde, sal dit aanvaarbaar wees om te verklaar dat MLM in werklikheid nie hul eie verordeninge op enige manier of vorm afdwing nie, en dat wetteloosheid die oorhand kry. Die SAPD kan nie alleenlik ten volle aanspreeklik gehou word om teen oortreders op te tree nie, aangesien dit die direkte verantwoordelikheid van MLM en die raad is om genoemde verordeninge toe te pas. Die Pet Dam is besaai met allerlei rommel, alkoholbottels, plastiek en houers, menslike ontlasting, gebruikte toiletpapier, gebruikte kondome en meer. Gemors dobber op die dam se water, en alge as gevolg van die besoedeling versmoor die ou paar oorlewende visse. Ten spyte van talle klagtes van inwoners in die omgewing, leë beloftes van raadslede in Ermelo, en flou waarskuwings van plaaslike wetstoepassers, gaan die partytjie voort, met geen einde in sig nie. Inwoners rondom die Pet Dam lê herhaaldelik klagtes by owerhede oor die geraasbesoedeling, geskreeu, drankbottels wat stukkend gegooi word, en die algemene onbedagsame, sorgvrye houding deur besope individue. Die dronkbestuur van partytjiegangers hou 'n risiko in vir alle inwoners en motoriste van Ermelo maar, helaas, klagtes val op dowe ore. Die Pet Dam-gebied, sowel as die oorloopgebiede is as vleilande geklassifiseer, maar owerhede toon 'n verbasende gebrek aan kommer oor die besoedelingskwessie wat hierdie terrein teister. Prominente besoedeling van die Pet Dam kan reeds vanaf 2009 opgemerk word, met die Departement van Water en Sanitasie (DWS) wat terreininspeksies op 14 Julie 2010, 11 November 2011 en 14 Junie 2012 gedoen het. Volgens die inspeksies het MLM rioolbesoedeling, rioolvuil geïgnoreer, en die impak op die omgewing is drasties. Volgens DWS-dokument 2193, het MLM óf versuim om op uitgereikte kommunikasie te antwoord, óf 'n onvoldoende aksieplan ingedien. Tot vandag toe word die Pet Dam steeds op 'n daaglikse basis besoedel, vanaf rou riool tot menslike ontlasting, plastiek, glas en ander rommel, met geen optrede deur die gesag nie. Tydens November 2018 se verwoestende visdood het beide Gert Sibande Distriksmunisipaliteit (GSDM) en MLM na bewering watergehaltetoetse uitgevoer, en die resultate is belowe om aan die publiek en media bekend gemaak te word sodra dit beskikbaar word. Tot vandag toe wag die inwoners in spanning vir die resultate. Die omheining val letterlik uitmekaar uit van die roes, gedeeltes is verwoes edur voertuie en vandalisme, en is nooit herstel nie. I wish to greet the Principal, Ms. L Geoghegan, of which I speak through her. Special greetings also to the SGB, educators, learners, all NPSS staff, parents and guardians. It is with sadness I have to leave the school, as I am grabbing a life changing opportunity. It has not been an easy decision to make, but through love, support and the best advice, I had to make a decision. Since I started in October 2016, I have had the opportunity to grow professionally, and learnt a lot for personal development. I thank the entire NPSS family for such love and warm hands. I believe we had great encounters with each other, and we have managed to drive the vehicle forward. Thank you to the office of the Principal for such great leadership and endless opportunities. As it is Women's Month, we continue to make a clarion call that we want more women in leadership or top positions. Die ErrieUnie streef daarna om die EHS te ondersteun op enige gebied waar nodig. Nadat 'n behoefte geïdentifiseer is, het die ErrieUnie die inisiatief geneem om 'n nuwe skrummasjien vir die hoërskool te laat bou. Die STONEHOUSE skrummasjien is op dieselfde wyse gebou as die een wat die Pumas en Springbokke huidiglik gebruik. Daar is besluit om die skrummasjien na voormalige onderwyser en afrigter by die Erries, Jimmy Stonehouse, te vernoem omdat hy 'n reuse impak gehad het by die skool se rugby jare gelede. Hy was ook die skakel tussen die ErrieUnie en MES (Mobile Engineering Services) wat die masjien gebou het. Volgens verteenwoordigers van die groepe is hierdie projek ‘n langtermyn belegging. Met groot opgewondenheid en styl ter ere aan Ermelo, was die baanbrekerseremonie van die grootskaalse konstrukieprojek deur die Moolman Groep en Abland aangebied op Dinsdag, 27 Julie 2021. Die Ermelo skouterrein is deur Moolman Group en Abland Ontwikkelaars geïdentifiseer as 'n uitstekende ligging vir die ontwikkeling van 'n plaaslike winkelsentrum. Die perseel, geleë op die hoeke van die snelweë N2 en N11, en naby die N17, is ook binne loopafstand van die Ermelo CBD. Volgens die Moolman Groep brei Ermelo se ekonomiese aktiwiteit uit na die noorde, verby Breyten, en dit maak hierdie perseel die ideale ligging vir 'n plaaslike winkelsentrum. Geen ander formele plaaslike winkelsentrum van hierdie skaal bestaan binne 'n radius van 100km van Ermelo af nie. Die ontwikkelaars is daartoe verbind om 'n winkelsentrum te bou met die vermoë om die kleinhandellandskap in Ermelo nog jare te oorheers en versterk. Volgens verteenwoordigers van die groepe is hierdie projek ‘n langtermyn belegging, waar die Moolman groep hand in hand sal stap met Msukaligwa Plaaslike Munisipaliteit. Die grond word op ‘n termyn van 60 jaar verhuur aan die groep, waar die lokale Sesman Kommitee sal baat uit die opbrengs. Gerugte dat die grond verkoop is aan die ontwikkelaars is dus ongegrond. Die ontwikkeling, wat na raming 60 weke sal vat om te voltooi, sal bestaan uit 'n volledig omheinde winkelsentrum van ongeveer 30 000 m², met die geleentheid vir toekomstige uitbreiding. Die anker huurders is bekendgestel as Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Clicks, Crazy Plastics en Dischem. Ander attraksies sluit in Cape Union Mart, Old Khaki. On Wednesday evening, emergency services rushed to a scene where a heavy vehicle traveling down Chris de Villiers Street, was set alight, allegedly after being thrown with a petrol bomb. Reports of residents, who were allegedly protesting in Extension 33, looting the contents of the HMV were also noted. SAPS and other services were quick on scene in an attempt to maintain order, but the damage had already been done. Firefighters battled tooth and nail to douse the smoldering wreckage of the HMV, while residents in the adjacent field cajoled and taunted their efforts. At the time of publication, no injuries have been reported. The SAPS has confirmed that a case of malicious damage to property has been lodged, but no arrests have been made as of yet. Dissatisfaction is growing as the state of Ermelo regresses by the day, with the state of the roads taking the spotlight. The state of Chris de Villiers Street, amongst others, have come under fire from road users, especially transport companies, with heavy vehicles being bogged down in the utterly astonishing sinkholes where the surface of the road used to be. Msukaligwa Local Municipality's neglect of maintenance is slowly but surely catching up with them, as tempers flare from fed-up road users. Msukaligwa Local Municipality, who claims to have a “shoestring budget” to maintain the roads, are now hampered by their half-measures and futile attempts at maintenance, as more and more of Ermelo’s roadways are crumbling away. What would have been clean and easy road maintenance, is now a road rehabilitation nightmare that will cost MLM millions to implement. Instead of patching of potholes and sinkholes according to set forth standards, MLM opted to filling it with soil and loose gravel, an act which has on numerous occasions been highlighted as wholly ineffective and a waste of resources. Amidst the service delivery issues experienced by Ermelo and its surroundings, Cassim Park is getting the short end of the stick regarding maintenance from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). What was once the pride and joy of residents in this area, Cassim Park has since regressed to a hollow shadow of its former glory. Streets are riddled with potholes, a myriad of worksites are left incomplete, several streetlights are either damaged and leaning dangerously towards the roadway, or completely out of order, and uncollected refuse litter the sidewalks. Grass on municipal grounds are long and unkempt, and council buildings, covered in graffiti and obscene spray painted images, rot away in glorious non-maintenance.
