MBCF to announce strategic action soon 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 1 September 2022 One of the larger issues that the community and business sector faces is the non-functional billing system of the municipality. On 10 August 2022, the Msukaligwa Business & Community Forum (MBCF), spearheaded by the chairperson, Janice Conradie, hosted a meeting with the residents and businesses of Ermelo. The aim of the meeting was to discuss and plan a way forward amidst the lack of service delivery provided by Msukaligwa Local Municipality. One of the larger issues that the community and business sector faces is the non-functional billing system of the municipality. This, coupled with the wholly illegal practice of the municipality’s departments billing consumers according to shockingly inaccurate estimations, have put more and more pressure on the community to finally take a stand against Msukaligwa Local Municipality. While the initial plan of action included a certain period of non-payment from a large percentage of the community and businesses, following a meeting with the MBCF’s advocate, the plan has now been revised. Conradie told the Tribune that discussions with the advocate highlighted the fact that withholding payment from the side of the consumer will prove too problematic, due to the finicky legality of the action. Furthermore, regarding the issues of potholes, refuse services and others, it is unlawful to withhold the payment of property rates for any reason, even if the municipality is not providing the services. This has had a massive impact on the execution of the initial plan, as it would seem that rate paying citizens are basically left to their own devices. However, not all is lost. Following the MBCF’s roundabout of meetings with various roleplayers and government officials, the plan has been revised and adapted to follow legal procedure. The best recourse, according to the MBCF’s legal team, would be to have a sizeable number of rate payers band together to lodge a mass dispute. The more individuals recruited to the initative, the larger the chance of success. Ultimately, the municipality will then, should the mass dispute exert enough pressure, be forced to provide the services to the community as mandated. A high level meeting between the MBCF and Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (COGTA) will also place additional pressure on the municipality to step up their game. Ultimately, the power of change will be in the hands of the community of Msukaligwa. All residents will need to unite and take a stand against the ongoing service delivery failure within the municipal bounds. The final stages of a legal, clear and concise plan is currently being undertaken by the MBCF. Once all details have been straightened out, the MBCF will announce the date on which the details will be conveyed to the public within the bounds of Msukaligwa. The date of the plan’s announcement will be made available in advance to all members of the public, stakeholders and roleplayers who would wish to partake. Therefore the date will provide adequate time for all interested and affected parties to make provision to attend the meeting. The MBCF urges all interested parties, irrespective of individual or business, to join the MBCF. This will strengthen the hand in dealing with these service delivery issues, and various other issues. SANDF Border Patrol test their mettle 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 20 April 2021 Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the troops deployed at the country’s borders continued to apprehend undocumented persons, they have prevented livestock theft, and arrested people guiding livestock towards the borderline. The South African National Defence Force soldiers deployed on Operation CORONA for Border Safeguarding are maintaining their mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the Republic of South Africa. These forces are breaking records of confiscating contraband goods, narcotics and intercepting stolen vehicles. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the troops deployed at the country’s borders continued to apprehend undocumented persons, they have prevented livestock theft, and arrested people guiding livestock towards the borderline. From 1 January until 31 March 2021, the soldiers have confiscated contraband goods to the value of R30 988 844.44, most of which came from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Stolen vehicles to the value of R26 393 531.00 were intercepted before they could illegally cross the borders. Narcotics valued at R21 473 511.00 have been confiscated by troops deployed in Kwazulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and Free State. More than 12500 undocumented persons were apprehended and handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS). All confiscated goods were declared and handed over to the relevant state departments, including the SAPS and SARS/Customs. Other activities conducted include traffic fines issued to individuals not abiding by the road traffic rules, and fines issued against citizens who contravened lockdown curfew regulations. The Moolman Group has confirmed that the project is now codenamed Merino Mall, and planning have now been put in motion. In early 2015, residents learned with great excitement of a planned shopping center, Plateau Mall, which was to be built in Voortrekker Avenue, where the Showgrounds is currently located. The project would be managed by the Moolman Group, a well-known developer with many successful projects on their roster. This flagship construction project, touted as a 30,000m² development, would see a completion date of April 2020, and which would house many new chain stores, immediately made a big splash in the community. Unfortunately, over time, the excitement disappeared into the mist of uncertainty, after no indication of any building process was visible. The community also abuzz with rumours of alleged political influence that played a role in the objections. However, the allegations could not be substantiated, and the dust settled over time. After the events, the planning was quietly swept under the rug by officials, hoping that the Plateau Mall would die a silent death. However, in 2019, a silent war still raged on the courtrooms between Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) and the Moolman Group. Hoping that the Moolman Group would abandon the construction, even though all legal channels and supporting documentation were in order, it turns out that the Moolman Group’s legal team still had a few aces up their sleeve. After an extensive court battle, the Moolman Group emerged victorious after obliterating the faux obstacles and reasons for the disapproval of the project from MLM. In January 2020, the Moolman Group was granted the go-ahead for the construction project. The Moolman Group has confirmed that the project is now codenamed Merino Mall, and planning have now been put in motion. They have made great strides in improving their relationship with MLM. At this point in time, with the information available, the construction is expected to commence in mid- to late 2021, and will take an approximate 18 month period to complete. Caring businesses fork out to patch up Havenga Road 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 18 January 2022 MAN Truck and Bus supplied food and cold drinks to the teams on site, and Van Wettens towing services supplied the diesel. While Msukaligwa Local Municipality fails consistently to provide service delivery, roleplayers within the community took hands to improve the conditions of Havenga Road. This roadway, which is a designated heavy vehicle route, has degraded to nothing but sinkholes and loose soil due to the lack of maintenance from the municipality. SG Coal Breyten, PC’s Sand, MAN Truck and Bus and Van Wettens Towing had enough of the shoddy roadway, and repaired the road surface to make it easier for road users to traverse. MAN Truck and Bus supplied food and cold drinks to the teams on site, and Van Wettens towing services supplied the diesel. Pet Dam water siphoned into tanker labeled for consumption 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 18 August 2021 Washing or swimming in contaminated water causes rashes, pink eye, respiratory infections and hepatitis. Concerns have been raised by residents regarding a trio of water tankers that siphon water from the Pet Dam on a daily basis, usually in the early mornings. While one of the tankers is clearly a construction tanker, and the water presumably utilized for such purposes, the remaining two is a darker shade of worry. Most concerning is the fact that one of the tankers that siphon water from the Pet Dam is labeled as “drinking water”. While it is, at this stage, unclear whether the water is actually implemented for providing potable water to the community, is unclear. The municipal spokesman has stated that if the tankers are not branded with Msukaligwa Local Municipality emblems, they do not fall under the municipal framework. The Pet Dam has been a sight for sore eyes, as well as a major health hazard for the community, fauna and flora for the past decade. Constant sewage pollution due to the municipality’s lack of addressing key overflow issues have only exacerbated the issue faced. The Pet Dam is notorious for its foul smelling water, and has also come under the spotlight due to a large-scale fish kill that took place. To date, the municipality has failed to provide the results of the water tests that were supposedly conducted at the time in order to determine the cause of the fish kill. Additionally, the Pet Dam faces a constant flow of raw sewage into the body of water, which has been ongoing since circa 2009. The collapsed sewerage network along President Fouché Avenue, as far up as Camden Avenue, sees kiloliters of rew sewage flowing towards the Pet Dam on a weekly basis. Collapsed and inadequate sewerage lines in these areas, as well as in the field between both Presient Fouché Avenue, Mauritz Read and Wes Streets also causes raw sewage to contaminate the dam. A large overflow of sewage near Autumn Ridge also flows down towards the Pet Dam. Consumption of sewage contaminated water can lead to a range of illnesses and defects to both humans and animals. Drinking fecal-contaminated water can expose you to E. coli, resulting in fever, watery or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. It can also cause gastroenteritis, more commonly known as the stomach flu. This infection causes fever, watery diarrhea, headaches, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. Waterborne pathogens, in the form of disease-causing bacteria and viruses from human and animal waste, are a major cause of illness from contaminated drinking water. Diseases spread by unsafe water also include cholera, giardia, and typhoid. Annually, thousands of people struck by Legionnaires’ disease, which is a severe form of pneumonia contracted from contaminated water. This disease is potentially fatal if left untreated. Washing or swimming in contaminated water causes rashes, pink eye, respiratory infections and hepatitis. The community is urged to refrain from accepting water from any tankers that are not officially employed and commissioned by the municipality, in order to avoid receiving contaminated water that is unfit for consumption. < Previous Article Next Article >

The financial inability to afford sanitary products, coupled with a lack of knowledge about menstruation, is called period poverty. The problem affects millions of young girls and women in South Africa every day, and yet there are ways to combat this social issue, while also assisting with job creation at the same time. So says Shamiela Sarlie, Managing Director at Blossom Care Solutions, a social enterprise that exists to combat the issues brought about by period poverty in South Africa, while also investing in sustainable job creation. Sarlie explains, “The overall impact of period poverty is to present even more obstacles to the learning and development of those young girls and women who are affected by it, when compared to their male counterparts. This, together with the social stigma that is still associated with menstruation in township and rural markets, causes additional social and economic disadvantages to those affected. This is why Blossom Care Solutions was established in 2019 as a mission-centric social enterprise: for women, by women.” She notes that Blossom Care Solutions has established a solid foundation over the past three years and will have a national footprint at the end of February 2022. “We are grateful to a number of corporate and NGO partners that have bought into our mission and supported Blossom Care Solutions. Slinkse kriminele het op Donderdag, 30 Junie 2022, ‘n transformator gestroop, en het hul ook uit die voete gemaak met ‘n onbekende lengte medim spanning kabel. ‘n Metaal skeepshouer se inhoud is ook geplunder, maar op dié stadium is die items wat gebuit was onbekend. Diewe het toegang verkry tot die skeepshouer nadat hul deur die kettingskakels gesaag het. Die metaal ClearVu omheining is ook netjies en stelselmatig geknip en opgebuig, en boewe het sodoende toegang tot die vliegveld verkry. Die transformator en alle bybehore was behoorlik gestroop, en alle koper en metaal van waarde is weggedra. Op die toneel was verskeie items gevind wat deur die diewe gebruik was, insluitend ‘n kort panga, metaal handsaag en moersleutel. Die nabye elektriese skakelbord is ook geplunder, en verskeie drade geknip. SASSA stated that this pilot will provide much-needed relief to grant applicants, as it will save them the inconvenience of standing in queues at SASSA offices. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) launched a pilot programme, entailing a self-service portal that can be used on both computers and mobile devices. According to SASSA, the turnaround time is 10 days, provided the candidate supplies all the stipulated documents linked to the application such as identity documents of applicant and spouse’s as well as banking details, among others. At this time, the pilot project will cover Child Support, Older Persons and Foster Child grants. SASSA stated that this pilot will provide much-needed relief to grant applicants, as it will save them the inconvenience of standing in queues at SASSA offices. According to the agency, the added advantage is that the convenience of online applications eliminates the risk of being infected with the COVID-19 virus. The agency may require documents supporting a change of circumstances such as payment method, banking details and address. The portal also provides updates on the status of the application. To access this service, applicants need to have an e-mail address to sign up, and to be able to log in for further services. Feedback will be sent via e-mail or through an SMS for those who do not have e-mail addresses. A receipt will be generated when the application is completed. SASSA stated that the testing of the system would run until 25 September. Supporting documents that are attached must be certified by a Commissioner of Oath. The agency is currently reviewing its system, and thereafter the other grants will also be added to the portal. Daarna het ek deeltyds my Onderwysdiploma by UNISA gedoen. My eerste tree in die onderwys, was as dosent by PE Kollege in Port Elizabeth, waar ek vir ses jaar werksaam was. Ek is terug na my tuisdorp in 2010, waar ek by Laerskool JJ van der Merwe as Graad 3 onderwyseres aangesluit het. Ek het 2019 na Graad 4 wiskunde geskuif, en het ook die graadhoof van die Graad 4’s geword. My buitemuurse aktiwiteite sluit atletiek, netbal en landloopafrigting in. Ek is ook die landloop organiseerder van ons skool. Ek tree ook as mentor op vir die onderwysstudente by ons skool. Die geleentheid om ’n verskil in elke kind se lewe te maak, klein of groot, is vir my baie belangrik. Elke kind moet spesiaal en uniek voel. Ek wil ’n passie wakker maak sodat hulle voluit wil en kan lewe. My kindertjies weet: Ons gee nooit op nie, en as ons dink ons kan nie meer nie, dan kan ons nog sewe keer Onderwys is my roeping en my passie. Ek dank God elke dag vir die geleentheid wat ek ontvang het om ’n onderwyseres te kan wees.
