Circa 2016, Msukaligwa Local Municipality took it upon themselves to erect a fence surrounding the Pet Dam, which would have been part of the supposed reform of the Pet Dam and surroundings. The BetaView fence, which is over 700 meters long, was erected amidst severe disgust and disapproval from the community, and at a staggering cost. Concerns have also been raised regarding the dubious quality of the fence erected. According to BetaView, their products carry a warranty of ten years against corrosive elements. The Pet Dam fence has been reduced to a limp, corroded and rusted husk in less than 3 years, bringing into question the quality of the materials paid for. However, nothing has come of the touted reform project, and the fence has since been left to rust away, being systematically vandalized and damaged. The fence has fallen victim to sever lack of maintenance, with no attempt at maintenance and upkeep from MLM. The results are in for the top five 1/3 Share GK CRONJE 3 November 2021 With an approximate 67% of the nationwide votes tallied, several results from local municipalities have been made available. South Africa's municipal elections were held on 1November 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. With more than 23 000 voting stations that opened across the country on Monday, the 2021 local government elections have , however, not been without incident. More than 26 million South Africans were registered to vote in the elections, the majority of which were between the ages of 30 and 39 years. With an approximate 67% of the nationwide votes tallied, several results from local municipalities have been made available. The result for Msukaligwa Local Municipality, as published, marked the African National Congress as the party on top, with 43 167 valid ballots, or 59.79 % of valid votes. The Economic Freedom Fighters came in as runner up with 12 494 valid ballots (17.31 %). The Democratic Alliance placed third, with 7 950 valid ballots (11.01 %). The Freedom Front Plus placed fourth with 4 828 valid ballots (6.69 %) with Independent placing fifth with 1 253 (1.74 %). The remainder is filled by other parties, with a detailed layout being available on the IEC website. Ermelo saw a marked turnout of voters, and grandstanding of the various political parties involved, as the day was declared a public holiday by President Ramaphosa. Francois Pretorius, a jeweller in Bethal who faces double murder charges of Dr. Hannes and Ms Ibel Beukes, appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court last week. Pretorius is accused of murdering the couple on 18 March 2020, and was arrested on 26 March after an extensive manhunt. W/O Veldman testified that the crime took place in the kitchen of the house, and the scene was clearly cleane dup in attempt to conceal the act. According to W/O Veldman, he could could see where the deceased were seated in the kitchen. SAPS investigators found blood on the porch, where samples were collected. The SAPS also recovered the clothes that Pretorius used to clean up the kitchen, which he burned afterwards, along with part of a flashlight. According to W/O Veldman, Pretorius left a letter to his wife where he admitted to have killed the couple by hitting them with a durable, metal flashlight. “It was definitely not a once-off shot, they were hit severely with the flashlight,” the W/O said. After the fact, Pretorius phoned his wife and told her the kitchen was dirty and asked her why there was nothing with which to clean the kitchen. His wife brought cleaning agents to the jewellery store. Pretorius asked his wife and children to help him clean the kitchen until 23:30. According to W/O Veldman, Pretorius owes a combined amount of R148 000 in arrear rental fees and electricity charges at both his house and store. In the letter to his wife, Pretorius apologized, and stated that he took all the money and gold from the shop before he left. There was no indication that he was planning to return. It has been stated that the deceased couple had business to cinduct with Pretorius. “Mr Pretorius and the Beukes couple had a quarrel about Jesus, and he lost his temper and killed them,” W/O Veldman stated. In early March 2020 Raees Tikly, a Grade 9 learner from EHS, participated in the De Beers English Olympiad. This Olympiad is a 3 hour open book examination based on a yearly theme with a prescribed anthology, where candidates critically provide written responses to the English exam questions with references to the texts prescribed for the Olympiad.
