Carolina SAPS is investigating an inquest case after a 20-year-old male from Mzamo Section lost his life at Silobela Dam. It is alleged that on Saturday, 26 September 2020, a group of Silobela youngsters were having a picnic next to the dam, when some of them decided to go and take pictures at the dam. The deceased jumped in to the dam with the intent of going for a swim. However, his friends alerted the police when he failed to resurface. His body was removed from the dam by SAPS divers, where he was certified as deceased. The Silobela community, especially the youth, is hereby advised to stay away from the Silobela Dam, especially if you are unable to swim with proficiency. Lardus sit die virus ore aan, deel sy storie 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 25 May 2021 Ek het gehoor hoe hy sukkel en hyg na asem met sy long funksie wat so swak is. Die volgende oomblik is dit stil. Dit is die ergste stilte wat ek nog ooit beleef het. Lardus Botha, ‘n geliefde en dierbare in Ermelo, is onlangs uit die Ermelo Medi-Clinic ontslaan na ‘n harde stryd met COVID-19. Lardus het verlede week sy storie met die Tribune ePaper gedeel met die hoop om meer insig en raad te gee aan inwoners. Lardus het op 27 April 2021 ligte griep simptome getoon, maar het nie veel gedink daarvan nie. Hy het vitamienes gedrink en gedink hy sal soos altyd vanself herstel. “Ek is meer as twintig jaar laas in die hospitaal. Ek is oor die algemeen nie sieklik nie, en ek kry oefening in waar ek kan.” het Lardus aan die Tribune ePaper gesê. Maar, wat begin het as ligte griep, het Lardus spoedig getakel en hy het al hoe slegter begin voel. “Op 3 Mei het ek soos ‘n hond gevoel. Ek was regtig siek, en het maar besluit om mediese hulp in te roep. Ek is na my dokter toe, waarna sy my aangeraai het om ‘n COVI-19 toets te doen. Kan jy my skok indink toe die toets positief uitkom?” Lardus se gesig raak emosieloos toe hy die res vertel. “ My dokter het aangeraai dat my gesin ook getoets moet word vir die virus. Ongelukkig was my hele gesin gediagnoseer met hierdie verpresting op 6 Mei. Wat is die kanse dat my hele gesin die virus sal opdoen?” Lardus se gesin het hulself in isolasie geplaas tuis, en het gelukkig herstel van die virus sonder enige komplikasies. Lardus vertel hoe hy opgeneem was op 6 Mei nadat hy gesukkel het om asem te kry, onder andere. “Ek kan die gevoel nie beskryf nie. Jy is heeltyd doodmoeg. Jy hyg, maar jy kry nie genoeg asem nie. Jou longe voel te klein vir jou lyf. Ek is opgeneem en hande en hande vol medisyne gevoer, omtrent twaalf pille daagliks. Ek het so gesweet, julle verstaan nie. Ek moes in die nag opstaan en op ‘n aparte stoel sit sodat my klere en beddegoed eers bietjie kan droog word. Dit klink nie na veel nie, maar ek het 9KG verloor in die tyd wat ek opgeneem was. Ek het emmers vol gesweet, elke uur is ek wakker dan is ek papnat. Alles het gevoel soos moeite, want jou lyf het nie krag nie. Om badkamer toe te gaan was ‘n straf, want jy het doodeenvouding net nie die krag in jou lyf nie.” Lardus skuif ongemaklik rond gedurende die volgende deel van sy storie. “Die ergste vir my was die isolasie. Alhoewel die mediese personeel tops was, en die mans-verpleegster ‘n regte yster was en my elke dag probeer opkikker het, was die stilte en die alleenheid die ergste. Omdat ‘n mens basies in kwarantyn is, mag daar geen besoekers inkom nie. My gesin mag gladnie besoeke afgelê het nie, en so ook nie my vriende nie. Wat my emosioneel die ergste getal het was ‘n man wat hul ingebring het wat langs my gelê het. Hy het ook COVID-19 simptome gehad, maar op ‘n erge graad. Ek het toegekyk hoe die mediese personeel spartel en alles moontlik doen om hom te help, maar te vergeefs. Die man is ‘n paar uur later oorlede. Ek het gehoor hoe hy sukkel en hyg na asem met sy long funksie wat so swak is. Die volgende oomblik is dit stil. Dit is die ergste stilte wat ek nog ooit beleef het. Die finaliteit van sy laaste asem wat hy uitblaas bly ‘n mens by.” Lardus sit vir ‘n paar sekondes in stilte. “My dogter het naderhand vir my ‘n abstrakte inkleurboek gebring, want ek was op die rand van depressie. Om te dink dat die dood vir jou wag om elke draai tydens die siekte is uitmergelend. Jy sit en dink aan nonsens, want jou gedagtes dwaal heeltyd terug na COVID-19, hoe sleg jy voel, en die vrees dat jy die stryd gaan verloor. Die feit dat jou hele lyf heeltyd so onbeskryflik seer is help ook nie veel nie.” Lardus gee ‘n klein glimlag. “Die beste advies wat ek kan gee vir mense wat COVID-19 opdoen, en opgeneem word... Hou jou gedagtes van COVID-19 af. Hou jou brein besig, en moet nie lê en tob oor wat dalk kan gebeur nie. Hou moed, hou aan veg en glo dat jy gaan gesond word. Sodra jy op ‘n hoop gaan sit en jouself bejammer, het jy die stryd klaar verloor. Doen al die oefeninge wat die fisioterapeut vir jou gee gedurende jou herstel, al voel dit hoe moeilik. Ek kon nie eers ‘n gewone ballon opblaas nie, want my longe was kapoet. Die basiese oefeninge van my arms oplig en bene beweeg was ‘n opdraande stryd elke dag. Dit gaan ‘n rukkie vat om ten volle te herstel, ek kan nou selfs skaars 10 meter loop sonder om te voel asof en die Comrades nounet gehardloop het nie.” Lardus sterk tans aan by die huis, en dit gaan baie goed met hom. < Previous Article Next Article >

Since 2014, residents in Extension 32 and 33 have had their lives changed by the constant overflow of raw sewage that impact their day to day activities. School children as young as 8 years old have to navigate a maze of pooled raw sewage, mixed with blood and animal entrails that plagues the community. The lack of a functioning sewerage network severely endangers the health of these residents, and the few sections of sewerage network are either blocked or overflowing. Some of the houses are ankle-deep in sewage, and are starting to sink away in the mushy mess. Others have had to improvise with makeshift walkways of plywood and heaps of soil to enter their yards. On Wednesday, 27 July 2022, the Tribune followed up on complaints of residents residing in Extension 32, it was noted that a massive sewerage spillage is ongoing in the area. Meeting with one of the affected residents, the Tribune was shown various sites where raw sewerage flows freely into the yards and roadways. Additionally, one of the overflow sites also emanates blood from the blocked manhole, which presumably flows from the abattoir. At another site, entrails and blood can also be noted. The complainant noted that a section of sewerage pipe had been removed by Msukaligwa Local Municipality, and had never been replaced. Hence, a large amount of sewage flows directly from the missing section, and snakes between the houses. The issue of sewage overflows in these extension has been ongoing for years, but have extensibly worsened since 2020. Complaints lodged with Msukaligwa Local Municipality resulted in the relevant municipal department stating that ‘they have no pipes’ to remedy the blockages and improve flow. Blood, entrails and raw sewage flows from at least five blocked sites in a small radius. Homes are swamped with overflow, and one resident showed the Tribune a trench that he had to dig by his own means to divert the raw sewage from his residence. “I am busy expanding my home, and once construction is completed, the groups of children that walk past my house will have to find another way to the school, or they have to jump over the pools of sewage. I have even lodged a complaint with my ward councillor, but to no avail.
