It caused immense damage to the local economy and it grossly violated human dignity. Pressure from FF Plus results in R95 million payment 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 22 September 2020 Bethal had to endure daily bouts of load shedding that lasted up to 18 hours over the last few years, as the council did not meet its obligations to Eskom. It caused immense damage to the local economy and it grossly violated human dignity. Despite the non-payment of the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, which encompasses Bethal, Charl Cilliers, Embalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda, Trichardt, to Eskom, and the detrimental consequences thereof for residents, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel for Bethal. Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) has made a payment of R95 million to Eskom. Although the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality still owes Eskom approximately R1,7 billion, the FF Plus has applied enough pressure to ensure that a payment is made with the specific aim of restoring the full electricity supply to Bethal and Emzinoni. Bethal had to endure daily bouts of load shedding that lasted up to 18 hours over the last few years, as the council did not meet its obligations to Eskom. It caused immense damage to the local economy and it grossly violated human dignity. GSDM has given Eskom three days to restore Bethal's power supply to its full capacity. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Beware of circulating fake messages | tribune-newspaper

Beware of circulating fake messages 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 8 February 2022 Unless you provide the scammer with authentication, verification or one time PIN (OTP) or banking PIN codes, the call will be futile. Residents are hereby requested to refrain from circulating a WhatsApp message that claims that your banking application on your phone can be hacked via a phone call. According to the message, the caller allegedly requests you to pick an option between pressing 1 and 2 on your dialer, to confirm whether or not you are vaccinated. Your banking app is then allegedly hacked after completing the dialing prompts. This circulating chain message should be considered as fake. Based off available information, the currently circulating message had been constructed off a similar WhatsApp message that had circulated in May 2021, which had been verified as fake. The fake message from 2021 also stated that the call was for “vaccination status census”. Verified sources state that a scammer can call you, pretending to be someone official, and so gain access to your personal details. Unless you provide the scammer with authentication, verification or one time PIN (OTP) or banking PIN codes, the call will be futile. According to ABSA, in cases such as these, fraudster will call you, pretending to be a bank representative or other authoritative person, who requires information such as your ID number, banking details and logon credentials to your online banking profile, to solve a problem or prevent your account from being closed. Vishing is difficult to trace, especially now that fraudsters can mask their numbers, leading a victim to believe that the call is from a legitimate source, or by diverting their number to a legitimate number. Clients can protect themselves by always being vigilant and never sharing their PIN, password, passcode and transaction verification or card CVV number with anyone. If you receive such a phonecall, immediately end the call, and report the call to your bank’s fraud helpline, and alert the SAPS. Your bank will never require you to verify your PIN, CVV or account details via a phonecall. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Update: MLM budget announcement

Malaza stated that substantial amounts are being paid to Eskom, servicing an account that, according to him, may not be settled in the near future. Update: MLM budget announcement 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 15 June 2021 Malaza stated that substantial amounts are being paid to Eskom, servicing an account that, according to him, may not be settled in the near future. Amidst all-time high dissatisfaction from residents, and a new low in service delivery, the IDP budget has been announced by Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), and has been slated as a multi-year budget. The MLM executive mayor, Cllr. Mkhaliphi, delivered the budget announcement, and subsequently outlined the state of the municipality. He admitted that the municipality is currently in a mixed state, and that several backlogs have been ameliorated due to the purchase of new equipment. According to Mkhaliphi, MLM will no longer rely on private service providers for fault finding and other services and that service delivery will be fast tracked. According to the report, MLM acquired, since 2019, 15 new vehicles, a compactor truck, a sweage suction tanker, 2 TLB heavy machinery vehicles and 2 vehicles for traffic management. According to Mkhaliphi, this will reduce expenditure on contractors. However, water delivery to rural areas are still maintained by hired vehicles. The acting municipal manager, SI Malaza, further stated that with the assistance of Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), the municipality has aquired 5 water tankers, a bulldozer for the landfill site, a waste compactor truck, crane truck, a TLB, 6 light delivery vehicles and 1 traffic vehicle. He further stated that the municipality struggles with ageing infrastructure, insufficient maintenance budget, as well as issues with revenue collection. MLM is currently implementing a financial recovery plan to enhance revenue. Another major setback involves electricity, cable and copper theft, as well as arson. Malaza stated that substantial amounts are being paid to Eskom, servicing an account that, according to him, may not be settled in the near future. According to the latest know figures, MLM has an arrangement of R180 634 883 with Eskom, with R35 000 000 already paid, and R145 634 883 being outstanding. It is unclear how these figures were calculated, or if these amounts are the interest or the capital amount owed. According to the last known report, MLM owed Eskom R172 million in August 2020. According to the MLM spokesman, Mandla Zwane, the municipality is on schedule with the arrangement between MLM and Eskom, and has stated that the NMD has remain unchanged since the court order forcing the lowered NMD to be restored. Find the detailed layout of the IDP in next week’s publication of the Tribune ePaper, including the services covered by MIG, departmental and WSIG funds. < Previous Article Next Article >

Jumping back on the nuclear horse 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 16 June 2020 The renewed vigor for nuclear energy comes as a surprise, as government dropped controversial plans to build eight nuclear power stations. These dubious deals had been initiated by former president Jacob Zuma, and has come under extreme scrutiny amidst serious allegations of corruption. According to statements from the energy ministry, South Africa is planning a 2 500 megawatt civil nuclear programme in an attempt to solve the country's electricity supply problem. “Given the long lead-time of building additional new nuclear capacity, upfront planning is necessary for security of energy supply to society into the future,” the ministry stated. South Africa is the only country in Africa to have a civil nuclear programme. The two reactors at the Koeberg power plant have been in service for more than 30 years, producing 4 percent of the country's total energy. At this time, 90 percent of the country's electricity is generated from coal-fired stations that are dilapidated due to poor maintenance, vandalism and aging. • MLM in hot seat over water pollution

Based on the Green Drop report for 2022, seven (7) municipalities in the province scored less than 30%. MLM in hot seat over water pollution 1/4 Share Content Supplied 30 August 2022 Based on the Green Drop report for 2022, seven (7) municipalities in the province scored less than 30%. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has asked the Green Scorpions to intervene as Mpumalanga local municipalities are failing to provide proper wastewater and sewage disposal. This exposes residents to an environment that is harmful to their health. During the latest Green Drop assessment for Mpumalanga, it was noted that 43% of the province's wastewater systems were deemed to be in a critical state, and that only 6 out of the 76 systems in the province were operating well above capacity. The above is completely unacceptable, given the constant land and freshwater pollution in municipalities such as Lekwa, Thaba Chweu, Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme and Msukaligwa Local Municipalities. The DA finds it extremely concerning that of the 118 directives issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation, Mpumalanga was issued with the highest number in the country at 24. During the 2022 analysis of wastewater systems in the province, no wastewater system scored the minimum of 90% needed. On compliance, Mpumalanga scored 19% on microbiological compliance, 25% on chemical compliance and 34% on physical compliance. Based on the Green Drop report for 2022, seven (7) municipalities in the province scored less than 30%. Bushbuckridge is rated at 24%, as wastewater systems in Dwarsloop, Maviljan, Tintswalo, Mkhulu and Tulamahashe were reported to be in a critical state. Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme was rated at 22%, as all 5 waste water treatment systems are in a critical state. Lekwa was rated at 17%, as both water treatment systems are in a critical state. Msukaligwa was also rated at 17%, as all 7 waste water systems were reported to be in a critical state, Chief Albert Luthuli was rated at 11%, as all 5 waste water systems were in a critical state, Thaba Chweu was rated at 10%, and Dipaleseng scored a mere 4%. Given the above, the DA has written to the Green Scorpions, requesting that they investigate pollution of the land and fresh water reserves in the above mentioned municipalities, and to ensure that this stops. < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Blossom Care Solutions fights poverty | tribune-newspaper

Blossom Care Solutions fights poverty 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 28 September 2021 The Blossom Care Solutions initiative creates shared value that benefits everyone. When women thrive, communities flourish. The financial inability to afford sanitary products, coupled with a lack of knowledge about menstruation, is called period poverty. The problem affects millions of young girls and women in South Africa every day, and yet there are ways to combat this social issue, while also assisting with job creation at the same time. In Mbombela, HL Hall & Sons, a multinational operation with businesses in fresh produce, property development, pharmaceuticals, technology, and financial services, has joined forces with Blossom Care Solutions to fight this national problem in a practical, holistic way. The approach enables the empowerment of girls and women from both an individual as well as an economic perspective. So says Shamiela Sarlie, Managing Director at Blossom Care Solutions, a social enterprise that exists to combat the issues brought about by period poverty in South Africa, while also investing in sustainable job creation. Sarlie explains, “The overall impact of period poverty is to present even more obstacles to the learning and development of those young girls and women who are affected by it, when compared to their male counterparts. This, together with the social stigma that is still associated with menstruation in township and rural markets, causes additional social and economic disadvantages to those affected. This is why Blossom Care Solutions was established in 2019 as a mission-centric social enterprise: for women, by women.” She notes that Blossom Care Solutions has established a solid foundation over the past three years and will have a national footprint at the end of February 2022. “We are grateful to a number of corporate and NGO partners that have bought into our mission and supported Blossom Care Solutions. The latest of these is HL Hall & Sons, through the initiative in Mbombela, which will see the opening of a sanitary pad production facility, using our specifically-developed business model. During our first year of operations, six previously unemployed women between the ages of 18-34 will be selected to complete Blossoms’ learning and development programme. The emphasis is on developing confident capable young women who are able to take over the running of the business after 12 months. Our social franchise model ensures that each of our franchisees are supported and nurtured with specific support provided by Blossom, including access to markets.” Tracey Davies, CEO at HL Hall & Sons, explains: “With a history of supporting communities, Halls remains committed to the wellbeing of people. We know that women play a pivotal role in contributing to a healthy society. Ensuring equal and ongoing access to education and opportunities for women is thus vital. Inclusion and accessibility put in place a solid foundation for socio-economic empowerment. The Blossom Care Solutions initiative creates shared value that benefits everyone. When women thrive, communities flourish. It is for this reason, we have decided to become involved with the project.” Sarlie clarifies that the Blossom business model has a decentralized low-cost approach towards manufacturing pads so that the franchises can be competitive at a local level. She further notes the importance of working with and helping to develop local small businesses. “Each Blossom franchise needs to be serviced by local businesses in the area. We need security, cleaning, IT support and distribution partners. In deciding on who to work with, we prefer to partner with other small, local businesses as these businesses, like ours, are the engines for job growth in South Africa. Blossom Care Solutions has two important channels to market: firstly, it uses commercial retail outlets like spaza shops, general dealers, pharmacies and regional and national key accounts; and secondly there is a channel composed of corporate partners, which buy pads that Blossom in turn hands out to deserving beneficiaries via the Blossom Beneficiary Programme.” Sarlie also acknowledges the importance of the partnership between Blossom and the Youth Employment Service (YES). The partnership provides for the funding of staff salaries for the first year in each Blossom location. Salaries are paid for by YES’s corporate partners, who have partnered with YES for purposes of improving their B-BBEE score. If you’re interested in getting involved with this initiative, you may contact Blossom Care Solutions, Shamiela Sarlie - shamiela@blossomcare.co.za , or HL Hall & Sons - Tracey Davies, traceyd@halls.co.za . < Previous Article Next Article >

  • Medirite among the first to launch flu shots | tribune-newspaper

Medirite among the first to launch flu shots 1/1 Share GK CRONJE 13 April 2021 Medirite is offering the flu vaccine at it’s 146 pharmacies located across South Africa. It retails from just R109 - and the pharmacy accepts all major medical aids. To book, call your preferred Medirite to make an appointment. Medirite is among the first pharmacies in South Africa to offer the 2021 flu vaccine, retailing from just R109, ahead of the upcoming winter season. The seasonal flu vaccine available from Medirite, the chain of pharmacies conveniently located inside Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets, protects against four strains of flu. Although the vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, it will play an important role during the pandemic, says Lisa Giltrow, Senior Pharmacist at Medirite. “The flu vaccine won’t make you more resilient to COVID-19. It may however make diagnosis of a COVID-19 infection easier. As the typical viral infection symptoms are largely similar in both the flu and a Coronavirus infection, presentation of these symptoms could mask a COVID-19 infection and result in a missed diagnosis. By having the flu vaccine and thus reducing the risk of contracting flu, it could rule out flu as a possible diagnosis and the person being tested for COVID-19 rather than writing it off as a ‘case of the flu’,” explains Giltrow. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection and severe outcomes caused by influenza viruses, advises Giltrow, and the flu vaccine reduces the number of flu-related doctor’s visits and hospitalizations each year. “Vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of serious influenza complications, and for people who live with or care for high risk individuals. The flu vaccine also protects both mother and child when administered during pregnancy - passive protection of the infant occurs from birth to less than 6 months of age following vaccination of pregnant women,” says Giltrow. Although anyone can obtain the vaccine, during the COVID-19 pandemic the World Health Organisation (WHO) has specifically recommended seasonal influenza vaccinations for health workers, older adults, pregnant women, individuals with specific chronic medical conditions, and children aged 6-59 months. Those who’ve previously had flu vaccinations should also return for their shots this year, as the new vaccines contain protection against the latest strains detected for the 2021 season, says Giltrow. The results are highly effective, and although no vaccine can offer 100% protection, they can reduce the severity of illness in people who may still contract it. “The flu vaccine stimulates your body’s natural defence system to produce antibodies. This occurs within two to three weeks after vaccination. These antibodies neutralise the flu viruses when the body is later exposed to them,” explains Giltrow. Medirite is offering the flu vaccine at it’s 146 pharmacies located across South Africa. It retails from just R109 - and the pharmacy accepts all major medical aids. • MLM presents new budget figures - Outlook is bleak

MLM presents new budget figures - Outlook is bleak 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 1 June 2021 Breyten, Sheepmoor, Lothair, Davel and Chrissiesmeer all showed a payment rate of 1%, which translates to virtual non-payment from these residents. On Friday, 28 May 2021, the executive mayor, Cllr. Mkhaliphi, presented the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) budget. While presenting the draft of the multi-year budget for 2021/2024. The budget layout was met with resistance from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as well as the Democratic Alliance (DA), who did not accept the budget. The African National Congress (ANC) deemed the budget to be acceptable, and the draft was approved. Concerns raised by the opposing parties included the issue of service delivery and the lack thereof, the Eskom bill, the issues faced on a daily basis with provision of electricity, the lack of maintenance of roads and infrastructure, and a myriad of other issues. According to the presentation, the lack of payment from residents negatively impact the service delivery efficiency from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM). MLM stated that a loss of 40% in electricity distribution is lost due to illegal connections, and 42% loss of water is due to the aged infrastructure and unmetered stands. MLM also stated that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on all operations across the board. It was also noted that bulk purchases for water and electricity, contracted services and salary cost, plus payment of creditors exceed the cash income that is not fully collected, and higher than the collection rate of 66 %. Interest for non-payment of creditors due to poor cash flow also has a great impact on the budget. According to the budget layout, bulk electricity and water cost is 35 % of the total operating expenditure budget, salaries takes 26 % of the total operating expenditure, but at a cost of 33% of the current cash flow, and between Eskom, Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and salaries, the cash budget is 99% of the available funds. According to a new valuation roll to be implemented from 1 July 2021, and property market values that could increase between 20-50%, the council will implement a 4% tariff increase, and that all properties of which is not indigent registered owners will now pay full property rates. All electricity services will be increased by 16%. Property rates increase will be 4%, on top of increased market value. Water services will see an increase of 6%, as will sewerage services, refuse services and all sundry tariffs. According to the budget layout, a mere 34% payment rate is noted in Ermelo. Wesselton has a measly 8% payment rate. Shockingly, Breyten, Sheepmoor, Lothair, Davel and Chrissiesmeer all showed a payment rate of 1%, which translates to virtual non-payment from these residents. Warburton has a 7% payment rate, with Departmental payment rates sitting at a poor 6%. In total, a payment rate of 64% is noted within MLM’s governance. The Tribune ePaper will communicate with Mandla Zwane, municipal spokesperson, to nail down finer details of the budget, which will be published in next week’s ePaper. Issues raised will include the infamous 88kVA issue, the collapsing sewerage network, the shoddy state of the roads and more. < Previous Article Next Article >
