- MLM Fire & Rescue clears the air
On Saturday evening, two separate incidents of arson were reported. The first incident occurred when the field between Mauritz Read Street and President Fouché Avenue was set alight. Residents in this area chocked in bellows of thick smoke, and Msukaligwa Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS). In the second, unrelated incident, a yard where a house was demolished was set alight, and the fire quickly spread out of control. MFRS responded swiftly, and saved surrounding residents from certain damage, should the blaze have been left unchecked. MFRS battled the flames, which caused damage in three separate yards, and had the potential to cause much more damage than it did. The inferno was doused in record time, and despite just have fought a blaze, the firefighters were friendly and extremely well mannered. Authorities have, on several occasions, cautioned the public against acts of arson, as it is a crime. You may be liable to fine, prison sentence, or both if convicted. Culprits of arson may also be held liable for the costs incurred by rescue services. MFRS has subsequently voiced it’s concern and response to complaints and unwarranted criticism from the public. “Our firefighters had many times been accused of late arrival at the scenes of fire incidents. We’re well aware of such complaints. Fire fighters are generally accused of late arrival, even in developed countries. Reason is that fire service stations are not everywhere. That is why we are so much emphasizing on fire prevention. People should adhere strictly to fire safety rules by ensuring they avoid anything that can trigger fire outbreak. For the late arrival, mind you, our calculation of arrival time at fire scenes is different from that of victims of fire incident. We calculate arrival time from when we were alerted of the fire incident, not when the fire started burning. Our major challenge is always the distance between the fire station and where the fire outbreak occurred. Besides, we always tell the public that fire fighters are not the cause of the fire. We’re only coming to assist them in fighting the fire which they themselves caused. Considering the nature of the job and it urgency, people will never give right of way for the fire fighting trucks to pass even when they are hearing the sound of sirens. Rather than inform us immediately they noticed the fire, they would be running helter-skelter trying to quench the fire. They only remember to alert us when the fire gets out of hand. We are not spirits. We are only aware when we are informed. Another ugly experience we encounter, which ocassioned the allegation of late arrival is the periodic attacks on our officers and destruction of our equipment. One wonders what those who engage in this nefarious acts tend to achieve. We will continue to go on sensitizing the general public on the need to always assist Fire Service and stop the attack on Firefighters and fire trucks. If they end up destroying our trucks, what then are we going to fight the fire with?” When in an emergency situation, please remember the following contact numbers: 112 for the ambulance service, 10111 for the SAPS, and 017 801 3400 for Fire & Rescue. Bethal hospital urgently needs direct power line 1/2 Share CONTENT SUPPLIED 15 September 2020 Although the Bethal hospital does make use of generators, which costs them approximately R755 000 per month, the hospital morgue and other departments are incurring significant damage due to the constant power outages and fluctuations. Media Statement - Sources at the Bethal hospital voiced their concerns about the frequent power outages that residents and the hospital have been experiencing over the last five months, and it must be resolved. The FF Plus is calling on the Govan Mbeki Municipality (Bethal, Charl Cilliers, Embalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda, Trichardt) and Eskom to stop punishing the hospital and paying Bethal residents by implementing load shedding that lasts up to eighteen hours on a daily basis. The municipality simply cannot make the responsible residents, who pay their accounts, suffer the detrimental effects of rotational municipal load shedding because the municipality owes Eskom R1,8 billion, a debt burden for which incompetent and irresponsible officials are to blame. Although the Bethal hospital does make use of generators, which costs them approximately R755 000 per month, the hospital morgue and other departments are incurring significant damage due to the constant power outages and fluctuations. The unnecessary costs of repairing fridges and other essential equipment, which are not directly related to the patients' health, are putting pressure on the hospital's finances, and the FF Plus fears that it might result in the needless loss of lives. The FF Plus will bring these issues to the attention of the MEC’s of the Departments of Health and Public Works, so that a solution to the problem may be found. < Previous Article Next Article >
- SAPS issues hijack warning
Traveling motorists are urged to exercise caution when stopping next to the road, or when ordered to stop by other motorists, as they could be potential hijackers. Motorists are requested to exercise caution when stopped by unknown persons, and to report such incidents to the nearest police station. If you are stopped by SAPS or traffic officials, and you feel unsafe or threatened, switch on your hazard lights and slowly drive to the nearest police station. Never offer a lift to a hitchhiker, and do not stop next to the road, except in the case of an emergency. People stopping to relieve themselves have also fallen victim to highjackers. As part of curbing highjacking incidents, motorists are requested to take heed of their surroundings. A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to break down and leave you vulnerable. When traveling long distances, plan your route and let someone know what your route is, and when to expect you at your destination. Avoid driving with your windows open, keep the vehicle’s doors locked, and put all valuables out of sight. If you suspect you are being followed, drive to your nearest police station, or a busy public area. When approaching a red traffic light, slow down so that you only reach it when it turns green, especially when driving at night. When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front so you can make an emergency escape if necessary Drive in the centre lane away from pedestrians where possible, and be wary of staged minor accidents, such as your vehicle being lightly bumped from behind without causing significant structural damage. If you do not feel comfortable with the individual involved in the situation, indicate that they must follow you, and drive to the nearest SAPS, or busy area for assistance. A 3-D render of the planned Merion Mall in Ermelo. 1/2 Share GK CRONJE 22 September 2020 In January 2020, the Moolman Group was granted the go-ahead for the construction project. The Moolman Group has confirmed that the project is now codenamed Merino Mall, and planning have now been put in motion. In early 2015, residents learned with great excitement of a planned shopping center, Plateau Mall, which was to be built in Voortrekker Avenue, where the Showgrounds is currently located. The project would be managed by the Moolman Group, a well-known developer with many successful projects on their roster. This flagship construction project, touted as a 30,000m² development, would see a completion date of April 2020, and which would house many new chain stores, immediately made a big splash in the community. Unfortunately, over time, the excitement disappeared into the mist of uncertainty, after no indication of any building process was visible. The community also abuzz with rumours of alleged political influence that played a role in the objections. However, the allegations could not be substantiated, and the dust settled over time. After the events, the planning was quietly swept under the rug by officials, hoping that the Plateau Mall would die a silent death. However, in 2019, a silent war still raged on the courtrooms between Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) and the Moolman Group. Hoping that the Moolman Group would abandon the construction, even though all legal channels and supporting documentation were in order, it turns out that the Moolman Group’s legal team still had a few aces up their sleeve. After an extensive court battle, the Moolman Group emerged victorious after obliterating the faux obstacles and reasons for the disapproval of the project from MLM. In January 2020, the Moolman Group was granted the go-ahead for the construction project. The Moolman Group has confirmed that the project is now codenamed Merino Mall, and planning have now been put in motion. They have made great strides in improving their relationship with MLM. At this point in time, with the information available, the construction is expected to commence in mid- to late 2021, and will take an approximate 18 month period to complete. As the only location lacking a regional mall within its immediate vicinity, Ermelo residents are sure to rejoice when the Merino Mall finally comes to pass. < Previous Article Next Article >

- Bongo set to face the music in November
The court case against Bongani Bongo and his 11 co-accused, Robert Barwise, Patrick Donald Chirwa, Harrington Sizwakhendaba Dhlamini, Blessing Mduduzi Singwane, David Boy Dube, Sipho Joel Bongo, Vusi Willem Magagula, Bongani Louis Henry Sibiya, Elmon Lawrence Mdaka, Sibongile Mercy Mdaka and Sandile Nkosi, who all briefly appeared in the Nelspruit Commercial Crimes Court in April 2022, is set to proceed with pre-trial proceedings as from 8 November 2022. Bongo and his co-accused are expected to submit a plea explanation. The companies Little River Trading 156 (Pty) Ltd, Broad Market Trading 204 (Pty) Ltd, Bongiveli CC, and Pfuka Afrika CC have also implicated and charged in the R74 million fraud case. The State will then proceed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused are guilty on 69 counts which, amongst others, include corruption, fraud, theft, money laundering and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). During the trial, amongst others will be an investigation where Bongiveli CC is alleged to have entered into the sale and purchase agreement with Fremax Farms, for a portion of Rietspruit Farm in Ermelo, for an amount of R10.5-million. The crux is that Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s valuation of the portion of the Rietspruit farm was said to be a mere R1.6 million. Another The other charge relates to the R37 million sale and purchase of a farm in Naauwpoort, eMalahleni by the Department of Human Settlements (DOHS). The legal owner of the farm received a mere R15 million from the sale. The irregularity took place while Bongo was the head of legal services for the Mpumalanga DOHS, working in tandem with Singwane to allegedly swindle the state. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mpumalanga Regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, stated that Bongo and his co-accused conspired to defraud the Department Of Human Settlements (DOHS). “In March 2022, the Department of Human Settlements paid over R52 million to Singwane. Subsequently, the law firm furnished Fremax with a guarantee of R15.6-million. The property was then transferred to Bongiveli from Msukaligwa Local Municipality, and the company became the owner of the farm. The farm was then sold back to DOHS for R32 million, and fell out of Spatial Development Plan for the municipality. It was therefore no longer categorized for human settlement,” Nyuswa said. At that time, Bongo was Head of the Legal Section of the DOHS, and part of the Committee appointed to negotiate the purchase of the farms. - Ripe for the picking while MLM cries foul
Opportunistic criminals sit and wait for the infamous load reduction to be implemented, and have themselves a jolly good time chopping off one cable after another. Ripe for the picking while MLM cries foul 1/6 Share GK CRONJE 15 June 2021 Opportunistic criminals sit and wait for the infamous load reduction to be implemented, and have themselves a jolly good time chopping off one cable after another. As you’re busy bathing your children and cooking dinner in the rush of peak evening time at home, the power suddenly goes out. The entire household curses in extremely colorful language, and you grab your phone to dial the call centre’s number. You’re informed that the outage is caused by cable theft, and that you’re going to have to make do without electricity for the next several hours. You sit and wonder how you’re going to finish the laundry, while your children stumbles in the dark, and your partner struggles to find the ever-elusive flashlight. According to Msukaligwa Local Municipality, thousands of Rands are spent every week to repair and tie in cables that have been stolen. Cables are being stolen in broad daylight, and entire wards are left without electricity. Opportunistic criminals sit and wait for the infamous load reduction to be implemented, and have themselves a jolly good time chopping off one cable after another. One cannot help and wonder as to how these criminals are so wily, and make a daring escape before anyone notices their wrongdoing and alerts ACSU or the neighborhood watch. Unfortunately, it is much easier than you might think, as various jerry-rigged electrical cables, ranging from low- to high voltage, are ripe for the picking. With shockingly low-quality workmanship, electrical cables are tied into substations and junction boxes, and draped over trees, fences and lamp posts, loosely tied down with flimsy wire. A shining beacon that screams “steal me” at the top of its voice. While MLM cries foul and laments the funds squandered on stolen cables, the old saying, idle hands are the devil's workshop, rings true. Ultimately, better craftsmanship, and correct procedures being followed, will both contribute to mitigating losses suffered by the hands of cable thieves. < Previous Article Next Article >

< Previous Article Next Article >
